This Close S2

Sorta by the numbers kitchen sink dramedy revolving around co-dependent BFFs struggling with their respective imperfections; you know, the usual trajectory of unresolved mommy or daddy issues > low self-esteem > intimacy issues > self-loathing > poor impulse control > career malaise > substance abuse, etc., etc., etc..

Oh, and there both hearing impaired too.

It's not great, but not entirely awful either; Michael's compulsive self-destructiveness is especially frustrating to witness.

As someone without a hearing impairment, I suppose my curiosity about the series stemmed from an interest in how the co-writers (who play the leads) and the various directors would choreograph action and incorporate diegetic and non-diegetic sounds (particularly underscore) in a narrative whose frames of reference are either a person who is partially hearing impaired (aided by hearing aids) or someone who is totally deaf.

Two productions from the Ryan Murphy mill:

American Horror Story S9E2

Annnd … I'm out!

A lazy, tepid and, more crucially, humourless regurgitation of all the over-used and abused Friday the 13th tropes. Also … Ryan? Fetishistic displays of bodily violence aren't scary, they're just cheap, cheap, cheap testaments to creative bankruptcy.

The Politician S1E3

David Corenswet is positively dreamy and I'd watch an entire show of the camera just gliding from his forelock to his precocious dimples to his luscious lips, and then down, down, down the expanse of his alabaster torso, but this witless Wes Anderson knock-off is just so flat-footed and tonally inconsistent that even Corenswet's natural beauty can't persuade my further indulgence.

Oh! And Ben Platt's performance is supremely annoying.

I've been watching a lot of episodes of House recently. I'd forgotten what a fantastic series it is, a few duff episodes, some a bit far fetched, but so many great episodes.

Just finished WAYWARD PINES.

I thought this was quite good, both seasons.

There is one sequence where. a character in suspended animation awakens every 20 years- to see if mankind still exists!

An amazing and haunting montage that should have garnered acclaim.

re: Wayward Pines

Having read the books and watched the series, neither of which, to be honest, are really top draw material, I was disappointed cancellation put the kibosh on the leap forward that opens book 3, particularly with Jason Patric having taken over as lead in S2.

Vietnam. After reading Max Hastings’s epic history of the war in south-east Asia, it’s fascinating to see the same thing unfold in newsreel and interviews. Tragic and frightening. Deep respect to those who were involved.

If you want to know about Vietnam, Ken Burns ain't the one to learn ya'.

Oliver Stone's docs are a much better source for the REAL story

Read " JFK AND VIETNAM" by John Newman for more on how we got in.

Disenchanted

Matt Groening's fairytale animated series. It's okay. It tries to tell a long-form story and it's pretty entertaining. Very rarely laugh out loud - some dead elves floating down a street in sewer water did make me laugh. But the characters are pretty good for the most part, particularly Lucy the demon has a nice design.

Hornblower

I never saw this series. It stars that Welsh lad, who is a bit of a charmless void in general, he was Mr Fantastic in two Fantastic Four films. But he's suitable here, though stretching it playing a seventeen year old. Some good actors in it like Michael Byrne and Robert Lindsay, and a few very much TV actors reciting lines they've learned on Sunday night telly.

The plot moves a bit thick and fast in places. There's no build-up and suddenly they're fighting a French warship. But in general it's well done and paced well enough. An hour and forty minutes flew by.

The models of the fighting ships are really great and well shot. Refreshing lack of CGI or greenscreen, so you always feel like they're on a ship somewhere actually outdoors.

The music is good but sometimes i found it a bit too big for what was going on onscreen and distracted by it.

If you liked Master and Commander, you'll probably get a kick out of it.

OUR BOYS This series is on HBO

IMDB summarizes this series stating:
“In the summer of 2014, three Jewish teenagers are kidnapped and murdered by Hamas militants. Israel is shocked, shaken and furious. Two days later, the burned body of a Palestinian teenager from East Jerusalem is found in a forest on the western outskirts of the city. In the ensuing days, Simon - an agent from the internal terror division of the Shin Bet, investigates the murder, while the parents of the slain teenager begin their long and anguished journey toward justice and consolation. The series, based on the true events which led to the outbreak of war in Gaza, follows the investigation of Mohammed Abu Khdeir's murder.”

You have to have a lot of patience to watch this series. It is very slow moving at times. The languages are Arabic and Hebrew so you have to read subtitles.

I don’t remember this incident, so I watched the whole series. At times it really dragged. At other times, I found it fascinating. When the Palestinian teenager is kidnapped, the Israeli police force employ cameras and forensics to find this teen. It is tense in parts. The series puts human faces on this event showing the anguish of the Arab parents as well as the heart-break of the Jewish parents. Interesting series and slice of history, but patience is needed.

Love, Death and Robots

I watched 3 episodes of this animated series. Episode length varies, as do the animation styles. Of the three i watched, they seemed to have interesting or fun ideas that were half thought out and extremely underdeveloped, or they were stories that didn't have anywhere to go in the first place. Like a two sentence joke stretched to 6 or 17 minutes. and the writing within the episodes seemed pretty weak, too. I won't be watching any more. The animation in each, although different, was engaging enough.

Catherine the great with Helen Mirren.
The usual skullduggery and lethal politics around the ruler of russia.

This started promisingly but by ep3 started to grate.
The rumblings of discontent between Catherine and her jealous lover became tiresome and what started as open warfare with her advisors dwindled to a smoulder.

Although diana rigg saying the four letter c word in Game of Thrones was both shocking and amusing, here we get to see Helen Mirren say it. I had to smile. Little things please tiny minds! smile

Couldve been so much better. Dunno about great, Catherine the average.

Mindhunter season 2.

4 episodes in and it's as good as the first series, minus the irritating relationship the young main guy was in.
