Hildur Gudnadóttir - Joker Alexandre Desplat - Little Women Randy Newman - Marriage Story Thomas Newman - 1917 John Williams - Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker
Can't find the thread about the shortlisted scores (engine down) but am I the only one surprised that the fantastic score to the "HTTYD The Hidden World" was not among the 15 "best" original scores of the year? Is March so far away or does the academy not like John Powell that much? (I know his single nomination was for the original HTTYD)
That's a lot of nominations for Newman now, so it would be nice for him to finally win. Expect it to be Joker as well, though it's a score that leaves me cold.
They gave Howard Shore another Oscar for the same franchise. Williams deserves the award for his 9 film saga as a whole. Its a magnificent yet a towering achievement after all. The Academy would probably like to recognize this opportunity to celebrate him onemore time, so why not?
Yes Williams should get it...not because its his/ the best of 2019 ,but its the conclusion of an extraordinary series. Just as Jackson got his best picture for the mediocre Return of the King as an appreciation for the whole Ring Serie. As for Newmans 1917...its ok...nothing special...the same ole Newman stuff.Don't get me wrong I like his minimalistic style. He 's the master of emotion and just like Zimmer defined a new scoring style... but he is becoming the new Horner...same harmonies in the last 20 years...one can easily put dozens of his previous scores on top of this 1917.
