Lukas once said, about remastering, (roughly) that there are only so many times you can put a new coat of polish on a recording, and still make any meaningful improvement. I suppose home video Sensurround equipment offers some excuse to tinker with the stereo separation or some such. For listening outside the movie, I'm confident I'll never have to upgrade beyond LLL's 3-disc set. I've dipped my last on this title.

Note that he's talking about the proper soundtrack, all of the sound in the film, not soundtrack as we mean it here, just the music. It's likely not so much double-dipping or polishing a great polish job on the score as ... kind of doing a La-La-Land job on the film mix, which it needs. The original release(s) didn't even get what had been prepared for the movie in '79, and the 2001 DVD was, at least in the visuals, only mastered at DVD quality, so it's likely the restored-to-intent sound mix wasn't allowed to be more than DVD could present as well. Paramount seemed to have a very different attitude about their vault many years ago than they do now. It's easier to believe that what's happening is the rumored 4K Director's Edition, upgraded across the board, than that the theatrical cut is being worked on as is (especially its sound). So this just seems like impending great news.

I've no doubt that you are correct here, WDL[L], though Botnick is quite specific in that he stated that he personally was engaged in remastering, for Dolby Atmos, only the original 16-track soundstage score recordings. This could be only for the purposes of giving the highest level of current fidelity to the score's presence in the eventual 4K-Dolby Atmos mix. Additionally, like some recent Beatles remix/remasters, it could be the prelude to an eventual standalone release of the score on a Dolby Atmos music-only disc. I'm heartily for all these propositions.

He said that? Shoot. I listened for just that note, but apparently not closely enough. Point taken!

Oh, I'm all up for a remastered and restored version of the Director's Cut for STAR TREK - THE MOTION PICTURE on HD Bluray. This is by far my favorite STAR TREK movie, I'd definitely get that.

As some have surmised, Botnick is working on an ATMOS remix of the original score tracks, and this is *likely* to be in preparation for a release of ST-TMP on the UHD / 4K format. My guess is that it's for an ATMOS remix of both the original and Director's Cut versions of the film. There is also a good chance that it means a release of Jerry Goldsmith's music in the ATMOS format as well, which could be tremendous. Of course, that will only benefit those of us with ATMOS surround setups. Tidal has recently started offering ATMOS music on their streaming service, and if it's done properly, the result is so much more satisfying than a conventional stereo release. Again, of course, you need an ATMOS system to get the benefit.

Dear Nedmerrill -- Since I see you've joined us as recently as April, welcome to the wonderful world of FSM! And because of your nom de plume, I have to ask: Have you seen any of our several threads about THE SWIMMER, both film and score? (I worked on the movie as a humble production assistant.)
