Only reason I'm seeing this film is because of Menken. If I was at Disney, I would use him exactly the say way Ashman used him; showcase his music over some stupid pop song.

The preview doesn't even mention songs; tries to look like SHREK, at least in style. THE PRINCESS AND THE FROG was not the success the Disney people had hoped for, in neither the film nor the music. Their excuse for this was the word, "PRINCESS," in the title, which they say did not draw that key audience, males between 14-20. However, on the critical front, the general consensus about PRINCESS AND THE FROG was that Newman's music, and songs, where simply unmemorable.... I agree with this. I have higher hopes for TANGLED, which, you may notice, has had a title change from its original concept, which was RAPUNZEL. Notice the new choice of not promoting a female element in the title. Usually, I'll buy anything Menken brings out. But he does have a weakness for gospel songs. The score he wrote for the new stage musical, LEAP OF FAITH, which played in L.A., was full of them, none of which was particularly memorable, except the title song. (And who here remembers Menken's score for HOME ON THE RANGE?) Still, I'll take an Alan Menken any day over a Randy Newman.... (Although Newman, to his credit, has written some notable film scores, such as PLEASANTVILLE, THE NATURAL, and RAGTIME. I've just never much liked his songs.)
