My review of Kronos Records' recent release of "La morte vestita di dollari" aka "L'ora di uccidere" aka "Dog eat dog" aka "When strangers meet": http://italoscores.blogspot.com/2017/06/crimewaves-part-7.html

A great little crime flick score.

Thanks, EasternFinn, for posting on this thread.

The item you review has had quite a chronology:

  • June of 1964 was this picture's premiere (as Einer frißt den anderen) in West Germany
  • then it was released during December '64 in Italy with an initial Italian title of L'ora di uccidere
  • A year after its premiere (in June '65), it surfaces in the U.K. as When Strangers Meet
  • not until July of 1966 was it promoted in U.S.A. as Dog Eat Dog

C.A.M. issued both a 45 r.p.m. & an LP of L'ora di uccidere, whose release is listed - curiously - as being in May of 1964 (before any of this flick's screenings!).

Even more curious is Kronos listing its year as 1967(!)
I recall reading that Italian soundtracks on vinyl were often distributed during the 1960s a number of years after their movies were shown, so perhaps this may be the reason for the 1967 copyright.

Glad that your blog has 4 entries thus far for both Savina and Piccioni. However, I think one entry apiece on Lavagnino and Trovajoli is very slim and begs for expansion! smile

Thanks for your nice comments! This summer has been quite busy for me and I haven't had time to write that many reviews. As you can see from the distribution of my reviews, there is no question who my favourite composer is smile However I'm slowly expanding my collection and being introduced to more and more awesome music. If you read my one Lavagnino review, I told that I don't even own that many scores by him because they tend to be perhaps too bombastic for my taste. But I've grown accustomed to his style by now and recently bought the stunning "Il relitto" which is going to be my next review. According to the liner notes, Trovaioli assisted with the lounge/calypso cues uncredited on that score. So that's going to already kill two birds with one stone for you.

Oh yes - that'll be a welcomed review.
I'm sure all of us are busy with something or another, so it's not humanly possible to be very comprehensive with respect to decades of different musical styles & trends.
It took me around 20 years to get 'into' Lavagnino, myself.
My suggestion to you would be to sample some of his late-1960s/early '70s titles to hear his more adventuresome facets. smile

L’ASSASSINO HA RISERVATO NOVE POLTRONE (1974), on Quartet

And then there were none ... Quartet now lists this Savina title as 'sold out':

    http://www.quartetrecords.com/cd-catalogue/l-assassino-ha-riservato-nove-poltrone.html

Slowly, a few Savina albums (on Digitmovies, mostly, such as Suggestionata or Anche nel West ... ) have been selling out.

Haven't gotten any of these yet.

I have a used C.A.M. CD on ULTIME GRIDA DALLA SAVANA, so I'm in no hurry for Quartet's expansion. The score is not one of my faves.

I'll sooner get the Western double-bill on Digitmovies, but not until sometime in 2019.

I have GOLDSNAKE ANONIMA KILLERS, CARI MOSTRI DEL MARE and
PERVERSIONE / STRESS (this is excellent btw)

And last year saw the expanded SIMON Bolivar, at least I think it was last year. An older one I was thinking about getting was Il Moralista.... Is it worth it?

Personal favourites are Ultima gride.. And Ombre Rovente

AMORE MIO is superb all the way through and I also love PERVERSIONE / STRESS

Really enjoyed LE CALDE NOTTI DI DON GIOVANNI as well.

No titles missed, Ag^Janus. You cited the ones released in 2019 & 2020.
The most recent KronGolds (Savina, Nascimbene, Lavagnino) are, IMO, a most satisfactory trio - and all 3 were conducted by Savina as well!

Of the 2 Saimel issues, I like the DON JUAN better than AMORE MIO but both are worth buying.

I like GOLDSNAKE, too. Some of its 'Asian'-styled cues overstay their welcome, but the Giallo-like suspense music compensates for that.

    Hi, Mark.

Il moralista is, I think, the earliest Savina music (1959) thus far on disc.
Only Savina completists (as I am) need acquire.
It is basically lightweight big band, so purchaser discretion is advised.

[IMO, the more world-weary & mature Armando Trovajoli succeeded best with this vintage comedy. Poveri milionari and Il vedovo are both also from '59 and played 'straight' without hijinks, so one may consider these titles instead of Il moralista if searching for jazzy late-'50s scores.]

Many many thanks for your reply Zardoz. It's a bit of a double whammy of an answer as it not only helps me decide on Moralista, but also on Poveri Millionari, which I also do not have, but was considering.

Finally caught up with all targeted Carlo Savina albums.

GOLDSNAKE ANONIMA KILLERS gets the gongs. 1966 same year as NAVAJO JOE.

    Suicide Mission to Singapore.

Hopefully some more Carlo Savina is on the way.

That's one of the very last Sugar/CAM owned score we had the chance to have on CD. I'm not surprised it sells, there's not very much else to buy at the moment.

Finally, Digitmovies will be back with two Sugar/CAM titles end of February - I COSACCHI by Giovanni Fusco and TRANQUILLE DONNE DI CAMPAGNA by Nico Fidenco - so that there seems to be some hope that the situation has improved or at least a new deal was possible with Sugar:

Thanks Stefan, Fusco is must for me. I enjoyed reading all your notes on the Saimel Savina AMORE MIO and LE CALDE NOTTI DI DON GIOVANNI I have only now acquired ... and also Alhambra's DAMON AND PYTHIAS all at once.

I only wonder about JOE DYNAMITE, FRANCO, CICCIO AND THE CHEERFUL WIDOWS and MR. HERCULES AGAINST KARATE ...
