I am not really that big a fan of John Barry, except for his earlier work, but I have always loved the 1973 TV version (which I consider the best I have seen) of this play with Sam Waterson, Katherine Hepburn, Michael Moriarty and Joanna Miles as Laura. I remember the music as being mournful and ethereal except for a few big band source cues.

It’s been years since I’ve seen it, but it remains strong in my memory and the music still remains haunting

Does any one else know more or have a comment about this score?

Did it have a release? CD or LP?

Could this be a candidate for a Prometheus, FSM, SAE, Varese or Intrada release? It was distributed by ABC so I wonder who has the rights to it now?

I am particularly interested in acquiring a copy of this score if you have it and could bear to part with it you contact me at mwruger@swbell.net.

The theme (heavily re-orchestrated) appears on a Polydor CD called, originally, "The Best of John Barry." Release # is 849 095-2.

Other than that, I don't remember a release of the score. If memory serves the main theme was played solely on piano.

It's also a stunningly good version of the play.

Thanks for the info. I hope it's release on DVD will prompt more people to see this haunting version of this classic play.

While you're waiting for JB's Menagerie to surface, how about giving a try to Max Steiner's wonderful score to the 1950 version?

here's a link to a selection on the CR Studios website:

Already on my list of things I must own. I'll have to add "Night and the City" as soon as I get all the relevant details.

From what I’ve read here and in other places, there really isn’t enough score to warrant a release. So I will probably try to create a suite from the DVD when it comes out. There are generally a few passages that are dialogue effect free, usually main and end credits that have music I can use.

There is supposed to be a Shoelimb coupled with the Tamarind Seed that has two tracks, so I may try and find that.

I'd really like to hear this, I have no qualms saying that I'm a massive Barry fan, did Katherine Hepburn have anything to do with Barry scoring this? I believe she was quite taken with the man's music!?...not a surprise considering how magnificent The Lion In Winter was.

I don't believe Hepburn had anything to do with Barry scoring "Glass Menagerie". The TV film was directed by Anthony Harvey. If you recall,
Harvey and Barry also worked together on "Dutchman","Lion in Winter","They Might Be Giants","Svengali" as well as "Glass Menagerie".

As for Barry's solo piano music to "Glass",
there are a grand total of four cues. And all are very short in length....not very much for a CD release.

And you will only be able to extract two of the four cues without sound effects from the video/DVD....I know, I've already done this.

All told, I think you might get a total of
just under two minutes of Barry's music from the film : (
