Has anyone seen the movie MARY MAGDALENE? It got 4 out of 4 stars at the Roger Ebert site. I have loved the gorgeous religious music of Rozsa in Ben Hur and King of Kings and Alfred Newman’s The Greatest Story Ever Told. I doubt that type of music will occur in this movie, but below is the write up about the music in this film from the Ebert site. Also, I have liked some of the scores by the sadly late Johannsson.

“The music of "Mary Magdalene" is significant on its own, but it has an added, sorrowful importance: it’s the last film score by the late Jóhann Jóhannsson, who is co-credited with cellist Hildur Guðnadóttir. Jóhannsson was a composer whose power came from his ability to create precise atmosphere with rhythm and melody, regardless of the project. “Mary Magdalene” is a strong testament to Jóhannsson’s meticulous arrangements, his mournful string pieces paired with howling winds and prayers, further coloring Fraser’s extreme wide shots that show Jesus’ followers as seeds in a barren land.”

Yes, I've seen it. I found both film and score rather disappointing, to be honest. Few traces of the gorgeous, religious chord modulations that Jóhannsson nurtured so wonderfully in PRISONERS, for example.

Thanks, Thor. I didn't find the trailer all that enticing, but I did have hope for the music. It is rare that I find a critic who will devote a paragraph to the film score so I wanted to share that on this board. We are lucky if critics even mention a score in a single sentence.

That's true, although Jóhannsson's position and circumstance was something rather out of the ordinary; hence why he was often mentioned in reviews, especially after his death.

Personally, I think something like PRISONERS or ORPHÉE would have been a far greater fit for this film and the style it tried to convey, but they obviously went a different way, into something more detached. That's OK.

Film Score: Thor you are so wrong on this. Mary Magdalene is absolutely brilliant and if you do not think the last 4 tracks are not "God-Like"- well, I wonder what you are hearing. If you'd like Joan- I will buy you the CD. This music just hits me directly in the heart. It was my favorite score of 2018 and most played. Like I've said before, I think I'm the only one who bought the CD and absolutely no one shares my opinion- including the Viking.

I am the Johannsson expert here and he dominated 2018 with his brilliance. Again, Orphee is the overall Masterpiece. Miner's Hymns and Sicario- the film score Masterpieces. Thor, someday we gonna have a showdown. Ha!!

First of all I totally forgot to look for a previous thread on this score, and I just EASILY found it in the search engine. Sometimes I can't find a previous topic, but this one popped right up. My bad. Here it is.

MCurry29, thank you for your kind offer, but I will look for the movie to try to hear the score in its context, and if I like it, I would buy the CD. I might see if some of the score is on youtube. The movie never came to my town, and I'm not sure why. Also, I wonder why Ebert is just now reviewing it? Maybe it had a limited release at one time and now will get a full release. Anyway, thanks for your gracious offer, and I'll look for the movie and for samples of the score.

Well, I've met and chatted with the man himself, if that helps! smile

Don't get me wrong, I think the MARY score is fine; it was just weird to not see him (and Hildur) channeling the religiousity aspect of the film more clearly.

I wonder if you really mean to say "religious" or "spiritual"? "Religiosity" has a pejorative sense in English that I don't think you intend. "Excessively, obtrusively, or sentimentally religious" (Merriam Webster). "Excessively, ostentatiously, or mawkishly religious" (Collins). Better yet: What are the musical characteristics that you are seeking to identify? Hard question, I know!

Ah, sorry. Yeah, perhaps 'religiousness' would have been better, if that's even an English word.

I once did a thread on my beloved 'religious sound': https://www.filmscoremonthly.com/board/posts.cfm?threadID=35916&forumID=1&archive=0

The writings I did in that 19-year-old article is 'nonsense' in my contemporary eyes, I think (clearly written by a guy who's in the middle of his university education), but I may have problems describing it in musical terms still. It has to do with psalm-like chord structures, though. Perhaps the examples in that thread are more descriptive than the text preceding them.

Jóhannsson himself captured this beautifully in PRISONERS (but not so much in MARY):

To my knowledge this film never opened in Chicago & I would like to see it.
To those that have seen it; how long ago did you see it & what cities did it play in ??

I saw it last year. It played all over Norway. I have no idea where or how long it played elsewhere.

I thought the lower-key approach than usual in both film and score was a refreshing change.

The movie was shot back in 2016. US rights originally belonged to Weinstein. The delay in releasing it here is because the producers had to disentangle the film from the remnants of Weinstein and then find a new US distributor. It was released overseas early last year, but only opened in the US this weekend, in limited release.

It was released overseas by Universal, and has already come out on Blu-Ray. The UK Blu-Ray should be region-free:

To my knowledge, almost all Universal discs are region-free.

You know I'm just joking around- I hope. Regarding the "religiosity" aspect. I FEEL It myself, and like I stated previously those last 4-maybe 5 tracks are pure heaven. The liner notes by the Director confirm he felt it as well.
