A twelve-part 1998 HBO miniseries. Inspired to do this after the insane flailing around on the guessing of the 500th La La Land Records release, which turned out to be a damn dirty Apes ridden boxset. ;-) "Can We Do This?" By: Michael Kamen https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x40x8eu Highlights: 0:00 in.* 4:55 in.* 8:10 in.* 25:00 in. 28:20 in.* About 41:40 in. 45:24 in. 46:54 in. 48:21 in.* 55:52 in. That's nearly the entire score. * = Score bumps (the non-cancerous equivalent of "goose bumps"). "Apollo One" By: Mark Mancina https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x40yevb Highlights: 0:48 in. 5:06 in. 7:26 in. 17:40 in. 40:25 in. 46:43 in. 54:26 in. "We Have Cleared the Tower" By: Mark Isham https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x40yevd Highlights: 5:53 in. 7:18 in. 22:20 in. 56:13 in. "1968" By: Michael Kamen https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x447gbl Highlights: 6:28 in. Continues passed the loud sound effects. 9:56 in. 20:15 in. About 22:20 in. Joining a cue already in progress. 35:31 in. 39:14 in. 41:19 in. To the end of the episode. "Spider" By: Mason Daring https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x447gmx Highlights: 14:25 in.+ 16:15 in.+ 23:40 in. 27:41 in. Low-budget synth homage of "The Great Escape"; certainly not expected. "The Simpsons" did it with an orchestra. I guess an orchestra was too much to ask for, for this on HBfreaskin'O. 3043 in. Also containing "The Great Escape", this time with orchestra; mainly doing the sweet airplane flying variation. 35:04 in. To the end of the episode; three long cues with brief lulls in between them. + = Certainly not what I was expecting to hear from Daring, having heard some of his documentary scoring. 48:10 in: That's still fantastic special effects even today.

I should be watching this show this week. It's been a really long time. Spider is a favorite both episode and score. Shepard's Mercury launch is very early yet it's a highlight of the series. Amazing and the score really moves it along.

Yeah, "Spider" is a lot of fun. CONTINUING
"Mare Tranquilitatis" By: James Newton Howard https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x447m96 This is Howard's only effort for the miniseries. Highlights: 2:19 in. 10:19 in. 31:21 in. Goes on for like seventeen minutes. Re-use fees charge more, as I recall, for longer tracks, so this would have to be broken up, which would be hard and not make it worth releasing. (we had one cue recently on a limited edition release, that had to break a cue up into two because of this shit) "That's All There Is" By: Mason Daring https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x4amust Highlights: 3:41 in. 21:30 in. 14:19 in. 25:42 in. 27:54 in. 35:28 in. AKA: The one where a Canadian went to space. "We Interrupt This Program" By: Brad Fiedel https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x4amuvc This is Fiedel's only effort for the miniseries. Highlights: 14:41 in. 21:02 in. 29:55 in. 42:40 in. Special mention to the acting of the late actor Lane Smith. "It's the paper boy. Good work, morons." "For Miles and Miles" By: Mark Isham & Jeff Beal https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x4amuwy Highlights: 3:46 in. 12:11 in. 16:11 in. 21:26 in. About 28:30 in. Sorry, but I wish Kamen had scored this, or at least the long finale tracked with existing Kamen stuff; the inferior and cheap synth stuff just ruined what was a quality production. Two cues were on a demo submission for the film "Deadlocked", titled: Stranded The Message

(we had one cue recently on a limited edition release, that had to break a cue up into two because of this shit) Yeah, I think it was the ET finale. Yavar

All the flailing nerdgasms just a mere day ago, and barely any comments in a thread devoted exclusively to the scores.

How is the Blu-ray? I assume it sounds great of course, but is the aspect ratio change problematic still? Yavar

Would have been nice if the Blu-rays could have included both aspect ratio options. But glad to hear that they recreated the special effects! That must've cost a pretty penny, a la Star Trek TNG... Yavar

It's a superb miniseries with very strong scoring from big name feature composers (apart from Mason Daring, who's no slouch either). If you care about the history of spaceflight at all, this show makes it come alive for you! Yavar

Oh, well, I didn't know HBO did that. Well, after seeing it, you'll want to own it. :-) And even tough I didn't say it, the end credits music one of my personal favorite cues ever: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jNLnLQcAJJs

I just haven't found anything else that gave me the nerd bumps like his score for the first episode. I expect, hopefully, for that to be rectified for when he returns for the final episode. I'll have further comments on the music when I am done (probably tomorrow; maybe I'll string it out to Friday).
