MILLE MILLIARDS DE DOLLARS (A THOUSAND BILLION DOLLARS) • CONTE DE LA FOLIE ORDINAIRE (TALES OF ORDINARY MADNESS) • LE CRABE-TAMBOUR (DRUMMER-CRAB)
Original Motion Picture Soundtracks
Music Composed by Philippe Sarde

World Premiere CD Release. Remastered edition.
12-page CD booklet with French and English liner notes by Gérard Dastugue.
Limited edition of 500 units.

Ref: MBR-166
Release Date: November 7, 2019

In collaboration with Philippe Sarde and Warner Chappell Music France, Music Box Records proudly presents on the same album three original motion picture soundtracks which highlight the collaboration between composer Philippe Sarde and three great filmmakers (Henri Verneuil, Marco Ferreri and Pierre Schoendoerffer): Mille milliards de dollars (A Thousand Billion Dollars, 1982), Conte de la folie ordinaire (Tales of Ordinary Madness, 1982) et Le Crabe-tambour (Drummer-Crab, 1977).

Music Box Records continues their collaboration with Philippe Sarde on the archaeology of his work for cinema through this edition of three new scores never released on CD before. For Mille milliards de dollars, Sarde chose to use four pianos and a viola to mention the activities of the multinational corporations. In Contre de la folie ordinaire, the composer used a guitar and the London Symphony Orchestra for a score filled with an authentic Spanish flavor. Finally, the daring score of Le Crabe-tambour mixed symphonic orchestra, Vietnamese monochord zither and hunting horn in order to emphasize this strange and philosophical quest for a man.

The program has been assembled, produced and supervised by Philippe Sarde and Dominique Spagnolo. This present edition features the same content as the original vinyl presentations for Mille milliards de dollars and Conte de la folie ordinaire. The expanded score for Le Crabe-tambour has been fully remastered from the original session tapes and includes previously unreleased tracks. The CD comes with a 12-page booklet with liner notes by Gérard Dastugue, discussing the films and the scores including new comments by Philippe Sarde on his collaboration with the three directors. The release is limited to 500 units.

It has taken such a long time for the lovely MILLE MILLIARDS score - which I have on LP for more than 35 years - to get released on CD. Now finally.
Thanks for the effort!

I'm very happy that 'Le Crabe-tambour' is included as well. I used to have this music on a 45 rpm, glad it is expanded. Great release, thanks Music Box for yet another Sarde title in your catalogue. Keep them coming.

Double post.

I never pass up an opportunity to praise Le crabe-tambour, the late Pierre Schoendorffer's film (from his own novel). It's a complex and beautiful story of adventure and regret, told in flashbacks as the crew of a French naval vessel in the North Atlantic reminisce about an almost legendary colleague of theirs from Indochina and Algeria. Despite the multiple Césars and Vincent Canby's rave in the NY Times, the movie did not get much exposure in the USA. I don't think we have a decent video edition yet.

I recall the music as bleak and appropriate.

Great news, this is typically the kind of Sarde stuff I’m very fond of. And unlike Stefan, I never owned the LP combining 1000 MILLIARDS…and CONTE… The excerpts sound great. Besides, I also welcome very much the addition of LE CRABE TAMBOUR to round it out. I’ve seen the movie once on DVD and found this rather sparse score haunting. This is shown by the two excerpts featured on MBR’s site: they contain great harmonies, especially from the string section.

Great news about Sarde!

I suppose there will be still more batch in early December - the final one of the year?

Here's a question for the knowledgeable Stefan: in the booklet, Sarde is mentioning his other collaboration with Schoendorffer, L'HONNEUR D'UN CAPITAINE (82). Do you know who owns the rights of this score and if there is any chance to have it released someday?

The rights for L´HONNEUR D´UN CAPITAINE belong to Sugar Music and the score has long been reserved in their CAM catalogue. I suppose that Music Box has reserved it, but then the question is why they didn´t release it together with LE CRABE-TAMBOUR.
Laurent, have you ever seen the film? I myself have never seen it - so I don´t know how long the music is, but I suppose probably not much longer than 20-30 minutes. So maybe Music Box is waiting for an opportunity to couple it with another Sarde score for which the rights also belong to Sugar?

Thanks to your reply, Stefan. You are as usual unbeatable on this matter! Great to know that this title has already been reserved. I have never seen the movie L'HONNEUR D'UN CAPITAINE (it could be an alternative title for J'ACCUSE btw!) so far but can borrow it in a multimedia library and will be able to tell soon if it contains a lot of music or not.

Stefan, I eventually managed to see L'HONNEUR D'UN CAPITAINE. The opening credits feature classical music: an excerpt from Puccini's MISSA DI GLORIA and further on, excerpts from Beethoven's 7th symphony have also been used, as mentioned over the end credits.
If I'm not mistaken, Sarde's music didn't start until the 29th minute: a beautiful track for what sounds to me like a viola da gamba and orchestra, but I could prove to be wrong where the soloist is concerned. It could possibly also be an ethnic instrument. It has anyway an ancient flavour to it. This track is repeated on numerous occasions later on in the movie, sometimes even superimposed with choral music. As a whole, save maybe for one another idea, I'd say whe are dealing with a monothematic score, based on this very lyrical main theme and variations. The end credits unfortunately don't mention any performer and orchestra, not even the publisher. The movie actually alternates scenes set in a tribunal together with scenes set 25 years before during the war of Algery, which explains that the score isn't that important in terms of duration and variety. It relies also a lot on Puccini and Beethoven.

Laurent, many thanks for your explanations. I had already thought that there is not that much Sarde music in the movie. Otherwise proably an LP would have been released in 1982 which however was not the case. So I assume that there is not much more than 15 minutes of Sarde music in the movie itself. Would that be correct?
Of course, something like this is not unusual as many Sarde scores during the 70s and 80s were only about 20 minutes long. Often even his LPs and CDs had somewhat more music than what could be heard in the French movies themselves.

Zardoz, I urge you to please remove this quote above by me. It is something which can´t be stated publicly at the moment so that it was my fault to have mentioned it at all and I have therefore removed the sentences also from my post.
Please understand that waiting for more actual infos is much better than speculating on this board and maybe getting into trouble.

The rights for L´HONNEUR D´UN CAPITAINE belong to Sugar Music and the score has long been reserved in their CAM catalogue. I suppose that Music Box has reserved it, but then the question is why they didn´t release it together with LE CRABE-TAMBOUR.

And the wait is over now for L´HONNEUR D´UN CAPITAINE. Music Box has just announced it together with LA MAISON ASSASSINÉE (same content as on the Sarde/Lautner CD from Universal) and ALLONS Z´ENFANTS (expanded from the 6:46 minutes on the Sarde/Boisset CD from Universal):

World Premiere CD Release. New remastered and expanded edition.
12-page CD booklet with French and English liner notes by Christian Lauliac.

In collaboration with BMG and Gruppo Sugar, Music Box Records proudly presents on the same album three original motion picture soundtracks which highlight the collaboration between composer Philippe Sarde and three great filmmakers (Yves Boisset, Pierre Schoendoerffer and Georges Lautner): Allons z’enfants (The Boy Soldier, 1981), L’Honneur d’un capitaine (A Captain's Honor, 1982) and La Maison assassinée (The Murdered House, 1988).

For La Maison assassinée, Georges Lautner once again requested the services of his friend and collaborator Philippe Sarde. For this story of revenge and mystery, the composer provided an efficient, lugubrious and seductive score in order to musically illustrate this “Provençal gothic”. Allons z’enfants, directed by Yves Boisset, is a coming-of-age story and an anti-military pamphlet. Recorded by the London Symphony Orchestra, the music showcases swift and luminous brass band performances with some lyrical passages. L’Honneur d’un capitaine marks the second collaboration with Pierre Schoendoerffer, after Le Crabe-Tambour. For this courtroom drama about a dead Captain whose memory is publicly damaged, Sarde composed a very short and elegiac score, for choir and orchestra, and beautifully performed by a plaintive solo violin.

The program has been assembled, produced and supervised by Philippe Sarde and Édouard Dubois. This present edition has been fully remastered from complete scoring session elements and includes previously unreleased tracks. The CD comes with a 12-page booklet with liner notes by Christian Lauliac, discussing the films and the scores including new comments by Philippe Sarde on his collaboration with the three directors. The release is limited to 500 units.
