I'm glad Netflix ran the entire end-credits on this Netflix produced film because I would not have been able to find out who the composed the wonderful score: Randy Newman! The music was supportive, very un-obtrusive, and actually quite lovely, and I couldn't figure out WHO it sounded like, until the end, and I was very surprised as it didn't sound like any other Randy Newman score, possibly 'Awakenings', but even that's a stretch. I would definately purchase this score to listen to again; he deservedly got a Globe nomination for it today.
The film itself is wonderfully acted from the stars to all the familiar co-stars. Alan Alda who is suffering from Parkinsons, (you can see a little bit of this affecting his arms and hands), gives an excellent performance as a divorce lawyer, as does Ray Liotta. THINK BACK..to the very first time you saw 'Kramer vs. Kramer', or 'Ordinary People', and how emotionally moved you were at the end of those films. This film will leave you feeling the same. An incredible script by Noah Baumbach (who may win an Oscar for it). Laura Dern will probably win as a shark-infused divorce lawyer in the Best Supporting Actress category. Scarlett Johansson is excellent as the wife/mother. HOWEVER, it is Adam Driver who carries the film. THIS, is his year, not only will Driver be nominated for the Best Actor Oscar, he will win it over any all the other men who will be nominated. The final 10 minutes of the film showcases Driver's ability to overpower even the most un-sentimental viewer, just wait for those final 10 minutes, he will make you reach for the box of Kleenex. It's going to be his Oscar to lose.
