Hi! I am interested in film scoring so I would like to hear some comments about my work.

First one would work for video games.

And in regards to the first one: It's too clean, too clinical, lacking any life. But like I said, it can work for video games.

For the solo piano cue: It's fine, but it lacks any of kind of hook of them to latch onto. But that won't matter in the Hollyweird industry.

First of all, thank you for your comment. I think you said everything I subconsciously thought about my work. I mean I love what I make, but still it doesnt sound just like I want it to. Now I know what to improve and what to do next, so thanks for your help smile

I would caution you to not take the advice of every forklift operator and drywall installer who posts on this Website, including me.

Thank you for sharing your music. I enjoyed listening!

The first composition has "strong bones." There is momentum and some interesting melodic ideas. I would work on several things to make it an even better composition. I think you may be emulating an orchestra here. If so, you may want to imagine what every instrument might be doing over the course of the composition. For the most part, it seemed to be 2-line writing: the driving bass and a melodic line on top. If this were an orchestra, a lot of players would be sitting there without anything to do. There are definitely some opportunities to add some interest and spice with some woodwind filigree, for example. Also, surprise the listener with more tempo or dynamic changes. Again, this is the start of a fine work.

The piano composition seemed to be a lament of sorts. It would work fine in a soundtrack setting if a director were looking for that particular color as background music, something that might not distract the viewer. I had some difficulty with it as a standalone piece. I really couldn't get a fix on the structure (not that you HAVE to have a well-defined structure). Like another post mentioned, there wasn't a hook that would differentiate one theme from another. Themes were ambiguous enough that I didn't know if the structure were ABCBA or ABCDE. Again, a structure is not necessary. You did a fine job with an aural description of sorrow or regret. Because of the free flowing nature of the music, it would seem (to me) to be more background ambiance.

You have talent and should continue sharing your ideas! I agree that you shouldn't listen too strongly about any opinions you read. So forget everything I just said.

I appriciate your advices. I completly understand you about 2-line writing. Its the first thing I noticed after I compared it to some famous scores and their sheet music. I agree that I should use tempo and dynamic changes. I didnt pay attention to those two. Now, about piano composition, it was meant to be background music for a scene. Maybe I should try to make piano piece as soundtrack, with memorable theme. That would be a good progress. These interactions really helps me to sort my thoughts out smile

You will find on here that if your music is not being played by a 100 piece orchestra and doesn't sound like John Williams then you're doomed smile .

I liked both pieces but would make a few comments based on what my (old) ears told me.

First piece.
The albeit-good pounding bass section was the same throughout with little or no variation so it, perhaps, grated a little after a while. When the beautiful choral section begins I would like to have heard either a different, much less pounding bass or even a break from it with something else. After the choral part ends you could bring it back in again in all its glory with, maybe, some extra colouring to make it broader than it was in the first part.
There is nothing wrong with 2-line writing per se but I would entirely agree that this particular piece needs more. Go for it smile

The second piece is quite exquisite but I was just begging for quiet melancholy strings to come in at some point to enhance it.

You are much better than video games music.

Would be interested to know what music workstation or keyboard you play and do come back if you produce revised versions.

The movie comes first.

The music by itself is just music. Good film music is composed to match visuals.

My advice is to find some college or any film makers who are making short films and score those. Then send us a link, if you like, for our opinions.

First sample: Sounds better than The Rise of Skywalker! Okay kidding a bit. Its a good start with some progression movement and grit. Though the underlying repetitive percussion which everyone is doing nowadays is grating on the nerves. Not your fault for emulating that.

Second sample: The piano theme makes me want to down a full bottle of wine and pain killers. So mission accomplished.

You have an "ear" for music. Keep it up!

Also as OnyaBirri stated, our opinions matter little in the real world.

Yes, breaking from pounding bass would also give me a little dynamic change that someone suggested earlier. I know composers like Two steps from hell use 2-line writing a lot and it sounds fantastic, but I would like to progress to more complex composing. I am using M-audio oxygen 88. Thank you for detailed review!

Thats great idea! I always wanted to have my music played over scenes from some movie. Main problem is that I cant really publish copyrighted material from movie so I would just gave up on that idea. But scoring a short movie would be great as the next step.

I took your comment for second one as a great compliment smile As you said mission accomplished. Thanks, I will! smile
