It's bizarre: LOVE FIELD is one of those CDs I've had for literally decades but never gave much thought about it. I have no idea why! Only recently did I rewatch the movie and put the CD on again, and man, was I stunned at about how utterly beautiful and listenable this gem of a score really is! (And most of it is sadly buried in the film mix or was left off the picture entirely.)

A totally overlooked and seemingly neglected entry in the Jerry Goldsmith catalog, apparently, but why? Just listen to the final track "Together Again" and tell me if this isn't truly heartfelt music and one of the absolute loveliest and most memorable themes Mr. Goldsmith ever wrote? The rest of the score is also very listenable, with the bluesy piano parts and the quite intimate orchestral tracks.

How I couldn't see the beauty of this music (with or without keeping the sad and bittersweet plot of the movie in mind) is beyond me. Give it a try!

I agree; it is one of my favorite albums, not just by Goldsmith, but anybody. I listen to it often. I would love to see an expansion, or the complete score.

My favourite track from the old CD was always the Assassination cue.
That was really great.
I remember the rest being pleasant enough, but a bit bland, like JG on auto-pilot.
Syrupy, like some of his other themes from around that time.
I believe there's lots of stuff that was dropped, according to Yavar.
I'll dig the disc out and give it another listen.

Compared to what qualifies as film music these days I'll take Jerry on auto-pilot any day! :-)

Give it to me! Now! Just do it! I wants it!

Check out my post on May 7, 2020 at 4:24 PM in this poll thread I started -- out of over 20 Goldsmith titles Varese controls in perpetuity, Love Field won SECOND PLACE in the ranked choice poll (even without the ranked choice it tied for second):

So it seems like there is some love. smile This is now my most wanted Goldsmith expansion from Varese, thanks to this thread featuring posts from both Roger and Doug at Intrada:

Gave this another listen, thanks to this thread.
And yes, heard over 25 years later, it's way better than 85% of any scores written (programmed?) today.
Track 1 had those Hoosier synths going off right away.
Zimmer's Driving Miss Daisy was deffo in the temp in at least one cue, married to some Raggedy Man style bits (track 2?).
I think I love The Assassination so much cos it recalls Twilight's Last Gleaming to me.
Where it loses me is the tired sounding synthy chase/suspense tracks and the main theme is a bit schmaltzy and similar to a lot of his other stuff around the time, like Mom & Dad.., Forever Young, Sleeping/Enemy and such.
I never realised the CD was so short.

This is what I hate about this board: The search for "Love Field" returned absolutely ZERO results or mentionings! Sorry for that, really...

But thanks very much! A most interesting read...

As with Chain Reaction, arguably the best cue was left off of the original release. Think this one would get a lot more love with an expanded release.

In the huge scheme of Jerry’s output, LOVE FIELD does occupy a quieter side street, but many in this forum would agree it’s an understated gem that rewards repeated listening. As Yavar said, it also polls quite high of the narrowing list of his scores that could benefit from a refresh by the right label. I watched the film long ago and at the time I didn’t notice much that wasn’t already captured on the admittedly brief Varèse release (though it sounds like at least one key track is missing), and the existing sound captures that 90’s gloss that Jerry favored, but with all that said I’d support any effort to bring this back to listeners’ attention.

No sweat, I wasn't being pedantic or anything, just trying to expand the discussion. I'm on automatic pilot (Hi Otto!) when it comes to old threads. Learned from Thor a decade or two ago.

ANYWAY, I was late to the Love Field viewfest but found it all intriguing, the period & all. Can't ever go wrong with a Michelle Pfeiffer performance, either. The music is a blank in the mind's ear. Would like to remedy that.

Regarding the best cue being left off the original CD release.
What kind of cue is it?
What does it underscore in the film?
Is it like the Assassination track, recalling Twilight's Last Gleaming, or more of the romantic main theme, or a bigger stab of the synthy chase/suspense stuff?
I'm curious.

It's a modernistic, vintage Goldsmith suspense cue for a scene of Pfeiffer and Haysbert escaping from the police in Dallas and beginning their road trip. It might not actually be the best cue, but it would provide more dramatic contrast to the album.
