How is The Treasure of the Sierra Madre suite on this album?

No one's ever heard this album before?

Where does it rate among the other Gerhardt/NPO albums?

From this album, I’ve only heard the Casablanca suite on DirectTV’s Movie Scores channel and the suites from The Two Mrs. Carrolls and To Have and Have Not on the expanded Waxman album (which brings me to this question, why is Peyton Place on this album rather than the Waxman album where it belongs?) and both of them are very good performances.

One question about "The Treasure of the Sierra Madre" suite should be whether the Vocalion corrects the awful wow at the very start that horribly afflicted the Sony release (but was not apparent on the former surround versions).
A similar problem affects the start of the Captain Blood Overture on the Sony release of "The Sea Hawk" album.

Judge for yourself.

Bob DiMucci: Judge for yourself.

The tempo on the main title is too fast for my taste, but that won't prevent me from buying it.

The "trek" cues are dead-on, and the main title might just be more intelligible in quadraphonic sound.

I have the new Vocalion disc and the wow on Sierra Madre is NOT THERE.

The mastering error that (reportedly) has been there since the first LP release, that was fixed on subsequent LP reissues and the Dolby Surround release, then reappeared on the remastered RCA/BMG CD series is NOT present on the Vocalion reissue of the quad master.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Ed. Dutton had clearly indicated that he has access to the the tapes and not just using the previous album masters. So, yes happy to learn these blemishes have been eliminated in the mix.

Good news. Thanks for checking.
One question... does that apply to both the quad AND stereo presentations of the SACD?

Not since the FIRST LP release. I still have the first release. It was on the subsequent LP repressing that the blemish first appeared. The Gold Seal LP reissue was clean. Weird.

I see that Vocalion has now also released a quadraphonic version of the classic Leinsdorf recording of Korngold's "Die Tote Stadt" opera.

Two more Charles Gerhardt SACDs coming from Dutton Vocallion this month!

From their front page:

In our February 2022 release, original cast recordings of musicals from Broadway’s golden age nestle alongside the music of Ives, Wagner, Holst, and Britten, in timeless performances conducted by Eugene Ormandy, Pierre Boulez, and Leonard Bernstein. Additionally, flute virtuoso James Galway is making his first appearance on Dutton Epoch, with a pair of superb albums featuring the National Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Charles Gerhardt. Recorded during the quadraphonic era of the 1970s, these classic albums are presented here in the stereo/multi-channel SACD format.

Note: these Hybrid SACDs can be played on any standard CD player.

I don't know if these are from the Classic Film Scores....?

Looks like these are other recordings:

JAMES GALWAY PLAYS SHOWPIECES & THE MAGIC FLUTE OF JAMES GALWAY

[SACD Hybrid Multi-Channel]

Sorry for the false alarm frown

I believe this is one of the albums Vocalion is reissuing on SACD. [edit] Looks like it isn't, but this is another of the albums Galway & Gerhardt recorded together at that time:

And that leaves:

Now Voyager: The Classic Film Scores of Max Steiner

Am I right?

Cheers

Here's a list of RCA Quad releases: https://www.quadraphonicquad.com/rca_page.htm

According to that list, all of the Classic Film Scores from the Quad era have been released on SACD. They have one more album credited to Gerhardt ("Spectacular Overtures") but that's an error. The album was conducted by Eugene Ormandy.

You left out "The Spectacular World Of Film Scores" which includes a suite based on Dimitri Tiomkin's score for "The Thing (From Another World". Gerhardt was going to do a Hugo Friedhofer album but it never happened.
