Falstaff (Chimes at Midnight) (2-CD)
Angelo Francesco Lavagnino

Quartet Records and Gruppo Sugar are proud to present an expanded, fully restored and remastered 2-CD edition of the masterful score for Orson Welles’ classic FALSTAFF (aka CHIMES AT MIDNIGHT) by Angelo Francesco Lavagnino (KALI-YUG, OTHELLO, THE NAKED MAJA, L’ULTIMO PARADISO). The film starred Welles himself as the eponymous knight, along with Jeanne Moureau, Margaret Rutherford, John Gielgud, Fernando Rey and Alan Webb. Welles cobbled together his script from several of William Shakespeare’s historical plays.

Lavagnino peppered his score with authentic medieval melodies, often presented in simple, unison settings. For the court scenes, he employed Renaissance-like brass chorales and trumpet fanfares. His exciting music for the Battle of Shrewsbury uses more modern techniques, employing a keening women’s chorus, a great deal of percussion and a higher level of dissonance. A contrasting highlight is the tender, mournful lament for the dying King Henry IV.

The CAM label issued a 42-minute LP of the soundtrack in 1966 and reissued it on CD in the nineties. For this premiere complete edition, we have included the entire 70-minute score – including several cues not heard (or barely audible) in the film – as well as the original album prepared by the composer. Claudio Fuiano has produced this 2-CD set, carefully restored and mastered by Chris Malone from first-generation master tapes courtesy of Gruppo Sugar. Mr. Malone has also reconstructed the original album from the original session tapes. The package comes with a 16-page booklet including an essay by Frank K. DeWald about the film and score.

Why did you trip up?

A big day for Lavagnino fans.
And had the magic dust of Mr Malone sprinkled on it, too.

Yes, I tripped on my jaw ( makes a change from my walletsmile ).
Now what to buy with it? I might throw in that Williams rubbish they're talking about.

This is my kind of music. Exciting and melodic. Seems like good things are mostly coming from across the pond. It's a buy.

My kind of music too! In fact about a year ago I paid extra to get a copy of the OOP Alhambra Records CD "The Orson Welles/A.F. Lavagnino Collaboration" which included several previously unreleased cues from this great score (as well as the premiere of Lavagnino's The Merchant of Venice and three surviving cues from the original performance of Othello for the same director, so no regrets on the purchase!)

Since that CD also omitted a lot of the original CAM album of Falstaff, on my to-do list I planned to figure out how to edit together a complete-as-possible version of this great score for one of my favorite Shakespeare films. But now, with this new 70 minute complete restoration from the great Chris Malone, I thankfully don't have to go to that trouble! Great timing and great release, Quartet! I will be picking it up for sure. Can't wait to read the Frank DeWald notes, too.

It came today. I won't go on about the music( except there's some lovely stuff in here). Anyone who likes this should be familiar. However I will say that for '65 it sounds fkn marvelous. I thought I was with the orchestra. It's bright, in your face didn't notice any background hiss.

'I have found a better composer than Verdi'!

I'm betting this is the Chris Malone golden touch.

How many midnights did Chris Malone spend restoring those chimes?

Last year we got Kali Yug - this year = Falstaff. Which C.A.M. albums are next in the pipeline?

Mine arrived today and it is truly wonderful. I was in two minds as I love the film, but was not familiar with the score. Whilst many of the tracks are naturally very 'olde England', some of it is quite beautiful music in its own right. If anyone else is wavering - you won't regret it. At 500 copies it won't be around for long. Grab it whilst you can.

What a marvelous score from Angelo F. Lavagnino. I am not really surprised. I have many of his CD's. Thanks Quartet for finding scores to release on CD that appeal to people who love beautiful melodies. FALSTAFF is the best release from any label so far for the year 2021.

If you haven’t seen the incredible film Cody, you must. One of the greatest Shakespearean films of all time, and very influential on later films to be honest.

And funkeymonkey, I’m amazed that you do love the film but were “not familiar with the score” — it is very present and makes a huge impact in the film!

Cody, didn´t you have the former CAM CD from the 90s with about 40 minutes? Or at least the Welles/Lavagnino CD we had released on Alhambra in 2017 on which you can find about 20 minutes of FALSTAFF and a few tracks (for example "The King´s Soliloquy" or "The King´s Funeral") which were not on the CAM CD?
If you take the material from both of these CDs together, not that much is missing anymore as there are probably also some repetitions (a few double takes for example) on the Quartet CD. I can say that as I know the complete master tapes very well which we had at our disposal when we produced the Alhambra CD.
