The score is fantastic. A wonderful listen and a great return for Cronenberg and Shore. I've repeatedly listened to this score, even playing it twice in one sitting, something I rarely do. As for the film, it is like many of Cronenberg's other films, that demand repeat viewings to grasp all of the thematic elements and nuances. The ending did feel abrupt, yet perfect at the same time. I didn't feel wanting for more.

As for the score, one of Howard Shore's very best. I only hope we are blessed with more collaborations between the two.

I had a listen based on your post. Very cool! Glad I checked it out. Neat stuff.

Glad to hear, David. Shore is second only to John Williams in number of scores I own. Usually, his work with Cronenberg brings out his best.

As for the film itself, am I only the one who thinks the film is missing its 3rd act?

Yes. Yet no. Expecting this kind of filmmaker or story to resort to the expectations of three act structure seems disingenuous; especially considering how successful and influential Cronenberg has been in his storytelling for over half a century. But there are paths one could build in the story to identify the act structures: the act of filicide, to the recovery of the body, to the display of the body. Or perhaps Saul Tenser struggling with his ability to digest food, seeking solutions, discovering a solution. It is a tale that has layers. Sometimes layers can be more rewarding than Hollywood's standard act structure.

Any other fans of this one?

It had a fan in me. Both film and score are some of my favorite experiences this year.

I would agree that his collaborations with Cronenberg are also my favourite. He seems genuinely inspired by the films.

Well said. And this film and score for me, too, are some of the best experiences I've had this year.

I've been unduly cautious about revisiting the theaters, to the point where I have not been to one since the outbreak. This movie changed that. I could hear the theater nearby rumbling with the sounds of Jurassic World as I nestled in to a new Cronenberg movie and new Shore score. Bliss! There were only myself and my kids (late teens), and four others in the small theater, while the crowds went to see the dinosaurs.

There will never be another like Cronenberg.

For me this is the best score of the year so far. Unless a miracle happens, Shore's score will probably remain among my top 5 favorite scores of the year. Sadly, Shore won't get an Oscar nomination for this.

Officially you are correct. I have CDs of Shore's last three 'download only' scores, COTF, Lost Prince and Funny Boy. The last two are decent scores, but COTF is in a different ballpark

Do you mean you burned CDs from the download versions? Or were there promotional CDs issued?

I bought them from a guy in Germany.

Shore knocked this one out of the park. I've already listened to this as much as other scores of his I've had for years. As for the movie I'm hoping for a 4k release soon. Maybe Criterion will pick it up.

Amazon had a 4K listed for such a long time and then cancelled the pre-order. I haven't purchased the Blu Ray in anticipation that Neon announces some kind of 4K partnership.

Interesting interview. Always good to hear Shore speak on his work. What stood out for me was when he talked about exploring new instruments and ideas and intentionally building from that while working on the next score, for instance with M. Butterfly and Crash. Perhaps this is not at all uncommon with other composers.

Also, was it just me or did he seem rather abrupt at the end of the interview with not wanting to speak on his theme for Rings of Power. Still, a nice listen.

I was surprised by that too. He really didn't want to talk about The Rings of Power after earlier describing how he loved working on the Peter Jackson films and his love for Tolkien in general. Is there any story behind that?

And I loved it when he said "I live in a forest". I've always wanted to say that.
