Looks like he composed the music for most, if not all, of the games, according to IMDb, so he seems like the natural choice.
All two of them?
I have no idea, I've never played the games. To be honest, I'm not really into video games, so I'd never even heard of this one until the series was announced.
Comfortably the best adaptation of a video-game ever made: one that deepens the game’s dystopian lore, while staying true to its emotional core. Like the game, it’s a masterpiece, too https://www.empireonline.com/tv/reviews/the-last-of-us/
The Last of Us is less sensitive than sentimental, an end-times fable where the apocalypse is a bonding experience and guns are better anti-viral defenses than masks https://ew.com/tv/tv-reviews/the-last-of-us-review-hbo/
“The Last of Us” is still a fascinating and enjoyable ride through an old familiar adventure tale, powered by actors who honor the original vision. When I compare the two stories, and the artistic choices made to differentiate the show from the game, I have to admit: the HBO version sometimes steals the show https://www.washingtonpost.com/video-games/reviews/the-last-of-us-hbo-season-1-review/
SOOO excited for this! Sincerely hope that Santaolalla ends up doing much of the score, and that it's physically released!!
Not sure what happened, but David Fleming is attached as a co-composer.
Just the logistics of composing for TV. I don't think Santaolalla is the type of composer for a large series, so of course someone else had to enter as co-composer.
David Fleming (Hillbilly Elegy, The Unforgivable, South of Heaven, Blue Planet II, The Perfect Guy) has joined Gustavo Santaolalla to score the new HBO original series The Last of Us. Both composer are receiving full and equal “music by” billing (credited separately) in the opening titles sequence of the show
