MONDAY, MAY 22

SECRET INVASION---trailer released for the Marvel/Disney+ tv series.

CHIEF ACTION OFFICER---tongue-in-cheek film clip introduces Arnold Schwarzenegger as Netflix's new Chief Action Officer.

FANTASTIC FOUR---entertainment writer Jeff Sneider posted a rumor which claims Emma Stone wanted $20 million to play Sue Storm in the reboot movie, but Marvel Studios was not willing to meet her demand, “I’m told that they went to Emma Stone, and for 72 hours, Emma Stone was looking like Sue Storm. We’ll see if Sue Storm ends up being a true movie star role, or someone who they go to for a rising star role which is probably where it’s head.” Marvel wanted to pay Stone less than what she wanted so there would be "enough for the rest of the team."

INDIANA JONES AND THE DIAL OF DESTINY---the sequel has received an initial Rotten Tomatoes critics score of 52% which is the lowest of the franchise. By comparison, THE KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL has a 77% score. However, DIAL OF DESTINY's score is based on only 29 critics so far.

MY MASTERPIECE---Maria Bakalova will star in this assassin movie whose synopsis says, “It follows a hitwoman hellbent on dismantling an unfair system within her industry, but she gets stuck on the second floor of an office building after she takes vengeance on a corporate overlord. That means she has to fight her way through fellow murderers and her past to ensure justice prevails. If all goes well, this might just be her masterpiece.”

ECHO--- a source claims Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige is unhappy with the upcoming Disney+ tv series, “I heard the show was kind of plagued by issues throughout production. I heard that it was a mess, and that the show came in so bad that they basically had to reshoot the entire thing. I’m told that they originally shot eight episodes, and [Feige] thought it was unreleasable, so they talked about cutting it down to four episodes, or six in post. But then they ended up reshooting it, so my source did not actually know how many episodes they wound up with. But yeah, apparently it needed a top-down rejiggering, and that Kevin was not happy with it.”

ALIEN VS. PREDATOR---former 20th Century Fox licensing director Joshua Izzo said he produced an animated AVP tv series, “There is, sitting at Disney now, at 20th Studios, 10 episodes of a fully completed ALIEN VS. PREDATOR anime series that I produced. It’s done. It’s in the can. It’s mixed; it’s finished. It was produced and story cracked by Eric Calderon and Dave Baker, two unbelievably crazy talented guys.” The series was put in limbo due to the 20th Century Fox merger with Walt Disney.

UNIVERSITY OF IDAHO---crime author James Patterson and investigative writer Vicky Ward are developing a book and docuseries based on the murder of four University of Idaho students in 2022.

MORTAL KOMBAT 2---Tati Gabrielle (UNCHARTED) is in negotiations to play assassin Jade in the sequel that also stars Karl Urban.

A COMPLETE UNKNOWN---Benedict Cumberbatch will play Pete Seeger in the Bob Dylan biomovie.

TRIVIA---more James Bond movie trivia.
In 2006, Woody Allen and Paul Haggis were both nominated for Academy Awards for Best Original Screenplay: Allen for MATCH POINT and Haggis for co-writing CRASH (he won). Allen co-wrote and co-starred in the 1967 CASINO ROYALE, and Haggis co-wrote the 2006 CASINO ROYALE.
The two writer/directors also have been accused of sexual misconduct. Allen was accused of sexually molesting his adopted daughter, Dylan Farrow. Haggis was ordered to pay $10 million to Haleigh Breest in a civil suit after she accused him of raping her.

Whats with Disney re-shooting their stuff 2 or 3 times over? Solo, The Rise of Skywalker, Dial of Destiny. Not to mention previous disasters like John Carter. These budgets are blossoming in the $250 to $300 million dollar range. It just shows the continuing incompetence of Disney as an organization.

It reeks of a studio terrified to actually COMMIT to a screenplay, so they shoot two or three optional "branching points" for every major scene, like a Choose Your Own Adventure book, and leave it up to the test audiences to determine which one(s) will end up in the final movie. It's a terrible way to make movies.

Yep, it smells of a company run by a committee. But we knew that all ready.

True, but there used to be one person with an overall vision for good or for bad. We know directors have a history of fighting with producers but it usually came down to the vision of one of the two. Nowadays everything is micromanaged by a hundred different people who wants their hands in the cookie jar. They also seem to have forgotten the principles of making a movie. Lock down a script, storyboard, etc before filming. Spielberg is famous for not only making a film on budget but under budget.

Watch the making of classic Disney's films, Walt was primarily the leading voice but he also encouraged his artists to improve a drawing, improve a scene. Not that there weren't differences and arguments but everyone still worked as a team with the goal of putting one version on screen.

I blame Wall Street, personally. There is no personality in corporate product anymore, it is made to appease the shareholders and the fine folks of "Middle America" who we increasingly seem to need to walk on eggshells around.

Fear not.
After a few more sequels, "Dial Of Destiny" will shine like a new dime.
The Law Of Diminishing Returns rules everything in life.

True and probably a big part of that is because of all the mergers.

Opening INDY 5 at Cannes a month and a half before wide release has really backfired, all the bad reviews and word of mouth may keep moviegoers away.

I don't think the general audience pays much attention to movie reviewers, they'll see what they want to see. Though I agree Cannes seemed like a weird place to do an early preview. Aren't they snooty connoisseur's?

Henry, I've read a few bad reviews and some reviews that have said it is a good movie. An example of a decent review is below. I really like the last two lines of the review. In the end, each of us will decide for ourselves if we like or don't the movie.

I agree, the Cannes opening won't make a mark in the general public and the movie will still see a big opening weekend. "Critic proof" is the term for a franchise like this.

As far as it opening at Cannes, it is a pretty common thing every Summer. The French love American big budget films like this, especially because it brings a huge star-studded presence to the festival. Last year Top Gun: Maverick wowed the audience there (and was considerably better received). In 2008, Kingdom of the Crystal Skull made a premiere at Cannes.

Yup, all the talk about this film over at blu-ray.com, & the Rotten Tomatoes ratings & all the very negative stuff on YouTube concerns a microscopically small percentage of the audience (to use a quote from The Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy: "an invisible dot on an invisible dot"). I'm sure it'll open big, it is Indiana Jones & it'll have the full Disney publicity machine behind it, but with a $300 million budget, it will need more than one great week. Let's see what word of mouth & reviews do for the second week.
