Dear Film Music Fans,

Today, I'm delighted to share with you, connoisseurs and music lovers alike, the culmination of a thirteen-year personal quest dedicated to one of the maestros of our time: James Horner.

The project I present to you is an in-depth biography entitled James Horner: The Emotionalist. This four-volume work is not just a tribute. It is the fruit of a meticulous exploration, both biographical and musicological, of Horner's life and work.

Through previously unpublished interviews, exclusive access to private documents, and close collaboration with the composer's close friends and collaborators, each volume strives to offer a unique and intimate perspective on the creative processes, inspirations, and emotional resonances that marked Horner's career.

The project's official website has just been launched, and I invite you to visit it to find out more. You'll find free excerpts that I hope will bear witness to the rigor and passion that have guided my writing.

I value your support and feedback. As members of this community, your perspective on the art we all love is essential. Don't hesitate to sign up to receive notifications of volume releases and to download excerpts.

I look forward to reading your impressions and discussing with you the many facets of James Horner's work.

The story begins here: https://jameshornerbiographybook.com

Musically yours,

Jean-Baptiste Martin

I'd heard about a book project in the works, but never imagined it would be a four-volume explosion like this. This looks excellent. From the samples alone I can see that you've written the definitive book on Horner's life. It looks thoughtfully and seriously written, not just the gushing work of a fanboy.

THANK YOU for including footnotes. I really like being able to quickly check where a particular quote comes from.

Thank you all for your feedback.

Yes, each quotation is carefully referenced with a footnote. There are over 1300 in volume 1.

I'll be second in line to buy this (I bet Avatarded has me beat). The sample pages are extraordinary and so vividly written. Can't wait...truly!

I'm not actively involved with it as in the past, but I remained fully confident it would be completed, come hell or high water because it had to be - JB was (and remains) all-in, 200% committed to it and indeed here it is...expectations exceeded. It's been a long road (as I try not to quote the Enterprise theme song) but the challenges he faced will result in something truly special.

This is going to offer a perspective on James Horner that will open many eyes of the film score fandom (such as this place going on well over two decades) whom had made their minds up, assumptions and biases set in stone, detractors and critics (and haters, oh so many haters) abound. I don't say that with snark (well, maybe a little) but a genuine sense of enthusiasm for everyone to come to understand who this person was and why he means so much.

Oh Boy!! Another great film composer biography to add to the stack on my bedroom nightstand. I'm all in.
Can't wait.

I have about 100 pages to go in Jon Burlingame's excellent MUSIC FOR PRIME TIME. I was born in 1949, so
Jon's very well-written book affectionately and chronologically parallel's my own growing up with the history of
television music. And it fills in the gaps in my TV experiences. Highly recommended!!

Then, ELMER BERNSTEIN, FILM COMPOSER, sits there on the stack next for me to devour.

Then, I'm expecting Jeff Bond's THE JERRY GOLDSMITH COMPANION to become available. Whether this James Horner
epic biography beats Jerry out to my stack will remain to be seen.

I do very much appreciate the Jean-Baptists Martin's writing style with the appropriate footnotes at the bottom of each page.
I tend to read books with exhaustive footnotes with TWO BOOKMARKS: one for the text and another for the footnotes.
I then skip back and forth as I come across each. This publication decision relieves me of that minor (but annoying) chore.

I better not misplace my reading glasses. smile

Thank you for all your feedback. It means a lot to me and is really encouraging.

The footnotes were very important to me.
As the text of the book is in the form of an oral history with many quotations, I had to indicate precisely their source.
I also wanted to put forward the names of the people who conducted the interviews, and the names of the magazines, websites and books that published them. I wanted these names to appear on every page, rather than relegating them to the end of a chapter or book.
