SEASON 1:
A revival of the old series. Many things are kept from the original series: The opening badge and show name with actors, the intro with scenes while Joe talks, the conclusion text, the guilty party of parties with voiceover about what happened, and the serious tone with some light humor with the partner, all just like the original series. Also, the opening theme music is retained, although the end is changed. For some odd reason, each year they'd put the year in the title. So, "Dragnet 1967" and "Dragnet 1968" for example. Lynn Murray scored the first two seasons. I used a template for quick editing of the text file, that already had the composer names inserted, so even if I used the Replace function to delete the redundancy, I'd still have to delete the empty lines, too, so it's just easier to leave them in. Attention readers: I have been using a system that is nothing more than a note to myself; for cues that I want to include in a suite one day, for now on I will denote them with ^ symbol. It has no special meaning to anyone else but myself. No, the lack of an up arrow symbol doesn't mean the cue is bad (it just may have too much SFX or FX for suite use or just isn't worth my time to edit and include). Hence forth this system will be in all future threads and pre-exiting threads that I go back to for missed episodes. Anything in ( ) are just notes to the arrow and you need not bother with that. The system does not mean that I will make a suite or that one has been made, it's simply for my own reference if and when I do decide to. Dragnet (A.K.A.: the pilot) By: Lyn Murray https://ok.ru/video/1533433154288 In 1966 a feature-length pilot was shot for a possible revival of the old series. It was picked up and in 1967 the show continued, with Jack Webb reprising his role as Joe Friday. However, he has a new partner (actor Ben Alexander, who played Frank, was committed to the TV series "Felony Squad"; then he died in 1969). For some reason, at the time, the pilot didn't air until 1969. Highlights: 0:00 in.^ 10:35 in.^ 19:56 in.^ 23:17 in.^ 23:58 in. Followed by the end credits.^ I think what that prunes-loving man at the party was trying to say is: People who eat prunes, give a shit... ;-) I can see why this wasn't aired to start the series. It's long, slow, and could easily have thirty minutes cut from it. (NtM: 2:57, 19:50, 31:34, 40:35, 52:40, 1:01:46, 1:10:25, 1:13:44, 1:23:50, 1:33:00) (composer credit: 1:35:07 in) Gannon: "Right now I'd sell my whole head for ten cents." And the cue after the commercial break.^ This show uses an entirely new end credits theme, which doesnt' work at all and is just wrong. (NtM: 1:44, 23:18) "The Big Explosion" By: Lyn Murray https://ok.ru/video/1533451832048 Highlights: 1:41/4:28/5:557:25/9:28/11:35 in. Militaristic cues with snare drum and timpani.^ 12:24/16:15 in.^ 18:58 in.^ 20:01 in.^ 21:11 in.^ 22:31 in.^ 23:39 in.^ This is a good score and it does a lot with maybe just five instruments. The whole plot point of a guy loaning his vehicle to a guy he doesn't know the name of, doesn't know where he lives ,etc., and the vehicle was in an accident, was already done in an episode of the otiginal series. "The Big Interrogation" By: Lyn Murray https://ok.ru/video/1533454453488 Highlights: 23:06 in.^ This episode features a timpani-only version of the opening theme and closing theme. And there is barely any score in it. One cue, in fact, is a short solo timpani piece and was used twice. Four, maybe five cues total counting the repeated use.

Don isn't just anybody, in conjunction with the branches and the Federal government, he created, runs and maintains a database of all current and former members, including the Frogmen of WWII. The scambags ganged up on him and reported a him in mass on tons of videos and got him kicked off of Youtube. About 8:30 in, Bill gets his chance at a good speech. And for all the false reality about grenades that Hollywood has portrayed in fil and TV series where they wait to explode as the plot/writing deems, have minimal affects, blow you into the air, etc., here we see an accurate portrayal: As long as the grip/trigger has not been released, you can re-insert the pin to avoid the explosion. "The Big Dog" By: Lyn Murray https://ok.ru/video/1540562815728 Highlights: 0:00 in.^ 3:17 in.^ 9:33 in. 13:03 in.^ 15:18 in.^ 16:50 in. 18:45 in.^ 22:15 in. 23:13 in.^ 10:55 in: I think this is tracked from the prior episode. 23:47 in: I think the closing cue is the same closing cue from one of the last two episodes. (NtM: 1:35) Friday: "It's been said that Los Angeles is the strange character capitol of the country." "The Pyramid Swindle" By: Lyn Murray https://ok.ru/video/1540569238256 Highlights: 13:22 in.^ 16:55 in.^ 23:53 in.^ I enjoy when TV series expose real-life garbage like this -- it hopefully saves somebody some money. Penn & Teller also had an episode of this series "Bullsh!t!" that exposed scams like this -- the season eight episode "Easy Money", Here is an excerpt: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_92zhGt05gU "The Phony Police Racket" By: Lyn Murray https://ok.ru/video/1540570286832 Highlights: 0:00 in. 7:15 in. 8:33 in.^ 11:12 in.^ 21:04 in.^ (NtM: 16:23) My local police department could learn a thing or two from the below quote. It got caught years ago unlawfully putting tracking devices on cars. Stopped, then started doing it again and then again got caught unlawfully putting tracking devices on cars. And other incidents. Doesn't seem to matter how is in charge. There's a high turn over rate now, with newbs typically lasting six months. I heard two of them bitching about the "official" unofficial two tickets a day policy, which of course, is unlawful. Never did see them again -- I think they bailed. "The Trial Board" By: Lyn Murray https://ok.ru/video/1541639244528 Highlights: 8:19 in.^ 16:49 in.^ 22:50 in.^ 0:00 in: I think that's tracked from a prior episode (maybe one of the last half dozen). (NtM: 9:14) "The Christmas Story" By: Lyn Murray https://ok.ru/video/1541641669360 Highlights: 5:52 in. 8:50 in. 14:06 in.^ 16:06 in.^ 19:25 in.^ 23:08 in. In this closing cue, Murray re-makes the closing cue of the original 1951 series episode.^ As this is a continuation of the original series, it seems really really ODD that they have chosen to REMAKE an episodes of the 1951 series ("The Big Little Jesus"). It's the same universe, it's the same Joe Friday, played by the same character -- it's not a remake series, it's not a re-visioning series, it's a direct continuation. This is strange! And it's largely a shot-for-shot remake, too! Little change. Even character names are the same. One thing that is different, however, is the comparatively inferior score by Murray. In the 1951 series episode, Walter Schumann provided a score that I praised. Here, it's just servicable. "The Big Shipment" By: Lyn Murray https://ok.ru/video/1541646322416 Highlights: 5:45 in. This might be tracked from one of the last half dozen episodes.^ 7:30 in. 8:43 in.^ 9:33 in.^ 10:55 in.^ 15:49 in.^ 18:39 in.^ 22:55 in.^ 23:45 in.^ "The Big Search" By: Lyn Murray https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IUeigwsxB3Q Highlights: 3:24 in.^ 6:26 in.^ 7:22 in. Continuing SEASON 2:
"The Big Prophet" By: Lyn Murray https://ok.ru/video/1541656939248 Highlights: Nothing. But the India-hippie source music would be nice to have. It would also shake up an release of season two scoring with a different sound. The drug-pushing hippie shitbag said fifteen years at the most for the bullshit he was peddling. That was 1968. Over fifty years later and while he was partially right about these people getting into positions of power and ruining things, that's about it -- so far Joe Friday was and is still right. I think this episode is something people in training for being a peace officer, should watch. (NtM: 6:54, 11:28, 22:25, 23:59) Friday: "You couldn't sell me directions to the men's room." Friday: "There's no shortcut to getting threw life, fella. "The Big Amateur" By: Lyn Murray https://ok.ru/video/1541658839792 Highlights: 11:55 in.^ 16:44 in. And the cue after the commercial break.^ 19:00 in. 22:41/23:37 in. Assuming this isn't just the same cue broken into two, a good editor could seamlessly combine the two and that's how a set of season two scoring should present it.^ Watching the opening exchange about envelopes got me to thinking: as much as Joe and Frank worked together, I think Bill Gannon is a better partner. He has more to his character and seems to mesh better with Joe's character. Probably sacrilege to say to fans of the original 1951 series. "Let's get to him before he trips over his own halo." "The Starlet" By: Lyn Murray https://ok.ru/video/1545691073264 Highlights: 0:00 in. 21:41 in.^ I'm not sure there is any original scoring in this episode. The cue after the theme music: pretty sure that is tracked from one of the last three episodes. 4:00 in: an edit job, tracked from "The Big Prophet". 9:05 in: tracked. Cue after that, tracked, too. 11:21 in: pretty sure this is tracked, too. Closing cue: tracked (probably from "The Big Prophet"). Bill: "'To Whom it May Concern'. That's all it says." Friday: "That about covers it, doesn't it." "The Big Clan" By: Lyn Murray https://ok.ru/video/1545691466480 Highlights: 0:00 in. 6:22 in.^ 16:57 in. This good episode harkens back to the original series, with just three actors and one room. The plot has its holes, mind you. "The Suicide Attempt" By: Lyn Murray https://ok.ru/video/1553349151472 Highlights: 0:00 in.^ 15:11 in.^ I guess it can vary from the type of pills you take, but the frequent Hollywood use of general pill overdose is not really a likely cause of death. Most of what you think will kill you from access, can in reality induce vomiting, diarrhea, serious health issues and will just leave you in horrible pain with possible life-long medical issues, rather than kill you. And as for the plot, in real life everybody reacts differently, so not everyone is on a strict two-hour plot time-bomb schedule. For a show that aims for realism, the more realistic outcome of this episode would have been to have found her brother, dead. 4:41 in: tracked. (NtM: 9:08) "The Big Departure" By: Lyn Murray https://ok.ru/video/1553350134512 Highlights: 5:41 in.^ 8:06 in.^ (NtM: 1:42, 16:44, 22:43) Bill: "We've done quit a bit of fighting all around the world. Whether you think it was moral or not, a lot of people are free today to make their own mistakes because of it. And that just may include you." Bill: "You can find enough to keep you busy right here. While you're at it, don't break things up in he name of 'progress' or crack a plaquered stick over somebody's head to help him see the light, be careful of his rights, because your property, your person, and your rights aren't any better than his. And next time you may be the one to get it. I remember a man who killed six million people and called it social improvement." Friday: "So, hang in -- don't try to build a new country -- make the old one work. It has for over four hundred years. And by the World's standards, that's hardly yesterday."

SEASON 3:
For the last two seasons of the show, Frank Comstock was used as the composer. And I guess they were pleased with his work more so than Murray's, because Frank gets his composer credits in the opening theme music credits instead of the end credits like Lyn. The opening theme music has been slightly re-done, also adding congas. "Public Affairs" By: Frank Comstock https://ok.ru/video/1572677618416 Highlights: 4:05 in. The fake TV show opening theme music. There's almost no scoring in the episode, as most of this is talk-show speaking. Lordy lordy lord, for a show with two leads who speak so well on subjects and really put thing into perspective, I was surprised at how truly awful they were on firearms. It was embarrassing, as well as the written rant of the guy at the podium. Continuity Errors: Joe says he's been on the job twelve years, but that's just factually incorrect. This show takes place in-universe the same year as the year in real life. Joe was not "new" to the force when the original series began in 1951. That's at least about seventeen years. Then he also states in the same sentence he's only fired his sidearm twice from eight draws, which is also factually incorrect. Just in the original 1951 series he's fired it more than that. In that one episodes where he and Frank shot a guy in the back who was fleeing alone, I think he fired a handful of times. For the guys here: 21:06 in -- beautiful redhead. You're welcome. "Juvenile" By: Frank Comstock https://ok.ru/video/1572678535920 Highlights: 0:00 in.^ 19:44 in.^ "Community Relations" By: Frank Comstock https://ok.ru/video/1572679322352 Highlights: 10:46 in.^ 12:41 in.^ 19:20 in.^(open/19:14) "Management Services" By: Frank Comstock https://ok.ru/video/1608044645104 Highlights: 12:35 in.^ This is a special episode. TV series would sometimes ignore real-life events just to keep the show going without shaking it up and causing any issues, but there, the real life assassination of Martin Luther King is what opens this episode.
