Just heard "Get It On" from "10" and I am always amazed at how well Mancini could pick up a pop genre (in this case, rhythm and blues/funk) outside what he's known for and just plain nail it. And no small credit goes to those soloists, too.

I wish I could link you to a sample, but I can't find one. I don't think your boss would want you jammin' to this at your desk, though.

Instead I will take this moment to make another plea to the Film Music Label Magistrates to please, please, please release JACQUELINE SUSANN'S ONCE IS NOT ENOUGH (1975) so that I can justify getting a Carol Brady shag haircut!

I forgot to ask....

Besides the one cut from SILVER STREAK, did Mancini write again in this idiom? I'm hoping he did some blacksploitation-themed writing, a la MCQ: http://www.filmscoremonthly.com/cds/detail.cfm/CDID/282/McQ/

(Thread re-titled and bumped in a desperate bid to get any responses at all).

And to provide a link to a monophonic sound sample here: http://www.mp3mixx.com/album/henry_mancini/mancini_10-1773576

If you want to hear more funkified, Isaac Hayes aping Mancini, check out Return of the Panther's raid music, which is the funkiest cut he ever did. Here's Looking at You Kid from the same album too.

A bit more of a disco beat, but check out Revenge of the Pink Panther, which features a really cool funk song by Lon Satton called MOVE EM OUT, there's also another great disco funk cue GIVE ME SOME MO heard during the club scene in addition to the awesome discofunk, electric piano and wah wah of the main title sequence.

I am still stooped as to why the Panthers aren't as acknowledged for their pop cool the way the 007 are. Way more wah wah cool to Mancini in my opinion than either Barry or even Schifrin.

I'm not sure if this is funky enough, strictly speaking, but it's Mancini:

Quality's not so good here, but the "WOW" effect sounds funkier somehow:

I'd forgotten that his same theme was given an '80s makeover for the "sequel" series:

Wow, that was Mancini? I never knew.

You always got the line on the interesting-est, obscuring-est stuff, Mr. H!

The LP has given me many a moment of funk-related enjoyment, especially that bass writing!

Thanks for reminding me about the PINKs. I'd forgotten about those cues.
