Following on from the 'flying' music thread a while ago, I was wondering if any of you fine folk can think of any inspirational film music that could be used for running.

Either to get psyched up for the start of a race or perhaps completing that last kilometre or so.

Obviously there are the usual candidates such as Rocky's 'Gonna Fly Now' which I love and Vangelis 'Chariots of Fire' which I have heard far too much.

It wouldn't have to necessarily be a tune used for a running scene. Equally it could be music when battling through the elements of cold, heat, snow, wind. mud etc.

lots of action music. Jablonsky's music for the first "Transformers" is a good start

Unreleased edit of two cues from an episode of "Superman: The Animated Series" ("In Brightest Day"; Michael McCuistion)

And edit of two cues from "Predator" (part of the Main Title and I think "Jungle Hunt" or some such name)

Two unreleased cues from "Enterprise" (Velton Ray Bunch)

"Saving Palmer"
"Star Trek: The Next Generation" ("Who Watches the Watchers?")
(Ron Jones)
http://www.filmscoremonthly.com/notes/box05_disc08.html#ep2 (sample provided)

Two unreleased cues from "Sgt. Bilko" (Silvestri)

One unreleased cue from "The Quick and the Dead" (Silvestri)

Two cues from "Gladiator" (rejected Goldsmith score recently released by Intrada)

"The Hijacking"
"Air Force One"
(Goldsmith)
Do I really need to link to it?

"The Riker Maneuver"
"Star Trek: Insurrection"
(Goldsmith)

I think some other loose stuff, but I don't recall off the top of my head. Always looking for more great suggestions, myself!

I am always on the hunt for the perfect run mix. I generally find electronic/synth music better to work out to because of the wall of noise factor and I don't want to hear cars or other people. If I am trail running all alone and it's quiet, I'll put on some Brian Eno or Steve Roach. Ambient music for long runs actually works very well.

Although you COULD find a few film score pieces here and there that would work for this purpose, my best suggestion is to eschew film music altogether and go for more beat-based genres. If you like electronic music, there's plenty of cool stuff in the psytrance/goa genre, for example. Or some hardhitting rock with a steady, fast beat. Like Rammstein. 80's electropop also works wonders.

I don't listen to music myself while I'm running....well, I'm not really running at all at this point, but that's the kind of music that gets me going if I'm in a gym or whatever, playing on the gym's speakers.

Utterly brilliant suggestions. Thanks for those.

I've also always like the Six Million Dollar Man theme. I found a few interesting remixes on YouTube.

John Barry's 'Hercules Lift off' from The Living Daylights is a good one and the 'Buffalo Chase' from Dances With Wolves.

Dustin Hoffman jogs several times within MARATHON MAN - so maybe Michael Small's soundtrack could be an interesting 'ambient' experiment for running? smile

Something made me want to suggest "Schindler's Workforce" from SCHINDLER'S LIST. It starts slow, but churns away in an inspiring way, and finishes with a "ohmigawd I barely made it" sort-of way.

"16 days of Glory" by Lee Holdridge has a couple of running scenes from the 1984
Olympics with score to match.

I recommend a compilation of marches from your collection. My favorite for running and biking is "El Cid March."

Allow John Powell to supply the adrenaline and your running will be effortless; let Bourne show you the way:

"Waterloo" -- Bourne Ultimatum
"Tangiers" -- Bourne Ultimatum
"Berlin Foot Chase" -- Bourne Supremacy
"Bim Bam Smash" -- Bourne Supremacy
"Moscow Windup" -- Bourne Supremacy
"Treadstone Assassins" -- Bourne Identity
"Escape from Embassy" -- Bourne Identity

Also I recommend you look into Hans Zimmer: The Peacemaker, Drop Zone, Broken Arrow, Angels and Demons, Crimson Tide. Plenty of hefty action cues in those scores to keep you moving.

Most recently? "Truckzilla Pt. 1" from Marco Beltrami's score to A Good Day to Die Hard.

"Fall of Freetown" from JNH's Blood Diamond
"End Titles" from Predator 2 (Silvestri)
"Transylvanian Horses" from Van Helsing (Silvestri)
"The Plan" from The A-Team (Silvestri)
"Deploy the Sharcs" from GI Joe (Silvestri)
"Hard to Starboard" from Titanic (Horner)
"The Ambush" from Clear and Present Danger (Horner)
"Rescue and Breakout" from The Missing (Horner)

Brian Tyler's Fast and Furious music or his scores to Eagle Eye, War, Need For Speed...

Ramin Djawadi's Saving Jessica Lynch is great for exercise.

I will leave you with three final words:

Jerry Goldsmith Rambo!

Any further suggestion on this?

EDIT: Apologies. I should have pointed out that I now own Bluetooth Trekz Titanium bone conduction headphones which make running with music much safer. Hence my resurrection of this thread.
