Following on from the 'flying' music thread a while ago, I was wondering if any of you fine folk can think of any inspirational film music that could be used for running.
Either to get psyched up for the start of a race or perhaps completing that last kilometre or so.
Obviously there are the usual candidates such as Rocky's 'Gonna Fly Now' which I love and Vangelis 'Chariots of Fire' which I have heard far too much.
It wouldn't have to necessarily be a tune used for a running scene. Equally it could be music when battling through the elements of cold, heat, snow, wind. mud etc.
Here's a tracklisting to a self-made compilation CD-R for exercising; everything has some kind of beat to keep up to, especially if on a stationary bike and you're trying to keep a fast even pace:
Rock On! Ironclad Remix - Sahara Going on Holiday - Run Fatboy, Run Chase Across DC - Salt Battle for Aasilya - Lair It's Alive - Godzilla The Avengers - Avengers Combat Drop - Aliens Zuwanie Arrival at UN - the Interpreter Molossus - Batman Begins Torrente - Torrente (Roque BaƱos) The US Open - Tin Cup The Race Begins - Iron Will Final Heat - Madison Zathura is a Black Hole - Zathura
Escape From The Hospital - Terminator 2: Judgment Day Theology/Civilization and Riddle Of Steel/Riders Of Doom- Conan The Barbarian African Rundown - Casino Royale Chateau and Mona Lisa Overdrive - The Matrix Reloaded The Ecstasy Of Gold - The Good, the Bad and the Ugly Five Millenia Later and Alech Taadi- The Fifth Element Johnny Vs. I am always on the hunt for the perfect run mix. I generally find electronic/synth music better to work out to because of the wall of noise factor and I don't want to hear cars or other people. If I am trail running all alone and it's quiet, I'll put on some Brian Eno or Steve Roach. Ambient music for long runs actually works very well.
Although you COULD find a few film score pieces here and there that would work for this purpose, my best suggestion is to eschew film music altogether and go for more beat-based genres. If you like electronic music, there's plenty of cool stuff in the psytrance/goa genre, for example. Or some hardhitting rock with a steady, fast beat. Like Rammstein. 80's electropop also works wonders.
I don't listen to music myself while I'm running....well, I'm not really running at all at this point, but that's the kind of music that gets me going if I'm in a gym or whatever, playing on the gym's speakers.
Something made me want to suggest "Schindler's Workforce" from SCHINDLER'S LIST. It starts slow, but churns away in an inspiring way, and finishes with a "ohmigawd I barely made it" sort-of way.
Also I recommend you look into Hans Zimmer: The Peacemaker, Drop Zone, Broken Arrow, Angels and Demons, Crimson Tide. Plenty of hefty action cues in those scores to keep you moving.
Most recently? "Truckzilla Pt. 1" from Marco Beltrami's score to A Good Day to Die Hard.
"Fall of Freetown" from JNH's Blood Diamond "End Titles" from Predator 2 (Silvestri) "Transylvanian Horses" from Van Helsing (Silvestri) "The Plan" from The A-Team (Silvestri) "Deploy the Sharcs" from GI Joe (Silvestri) "Hard to Starboard" from Titanic (Horner) "The Ambush" from Clear and Present Danger (Horner) "Rescue and Breakout" from The Missing (Horner)
Brian Tyler's Fast and Furious music or his scores to Eagle Eye, War, Need For Speed...
Ramin Djawadi's Saving Jessica Lynch is great for exercise.
EDIT: Apologies. I should have pointed out that I now own Bluetooth Trekz Titanium bone conduction headphones which make running with music much safer. Hence my resurrection of this thread.
