My favorite candy as a kid. Vanilla and banana were my favorite flavors. Put it in the freezer overnight then slam it down on the sidewalk and break it into -- well, I was going to say bite-size pieces -- but you couldn't bite into Turkish taffy, much less frozen turkish taffy, without removing half the fillings in your mouth!!

I last saw it for sale in 1977 when I was a freshman at USC. I guess it's gone now. Rumour has it that Tootsie roll owns the rights, but won't manufacture it.

Too bad. A great childhood memory.

NP: Big Jake (great main title!!)

YES I DO.
had the same problem you did.
it's not pc to name candy after a group.
you know the kurds might get upset.
i thing it should be called u.n. world taffy.
p.s
my mother had great fun pulling it out of my hair.

All of you must have been listening to a conversation I had with a friend over the weekend. We discussed this very candy.

Vanilla was my favorite -- hands down. My parents would give me about 15 cents to spend at the movies. I would use 5 cents to get Bonomos (and save the remaining 10 cents) because taffy lasted so long. I would let the little slivers melt on my tongue throughout the movie! I remember having one when I watch Viva Las Vegas! smile

Wow, thanks for bringing up such happy memories!

"B-O..N-O..M-O...TURK-ish TAF-fy...!"

I remember the commercials...hated the product. Yuk.

B-O-N-O-M-O. BONOMO'S. I remember the jingle to this day. Probably heard it on ads during "Andy's Gang," or some such.

The candy I loved then, and still do, is Hershey-ets, which used to be shaped like two cones attached to one another, in the same colors as M&M's. But I thought they tasted a lot better. You can still get a variation of them at Easter time, when Hershey sells chocolate eggs. Sometimes I splurge and gorge, knowing full well the vast amount of sit-ups I shall have do do in recomepense.

Hardly surprising: Hershey's has always made better chocolate than M&M Mars and their for-the-undiscriminating milk chocolate (not much of a compliment, though -- no American chocolatier's product can compare with best of Europe and Israel's dark semi-sweet).

AMEN!!! I work with many Europeans who laugh at what we call "chocolate". Anyone who has flown on British Airways and had that lovely piece of chocolate that they serve with dinner will know what I mean. It's quality over there, not quantity, and the experience is quite satisfactory!

Did you know that in Roald Dahl's preserved study, there is a 10 lb. ball of foil wrappers, accumulated from all the Cadbury chocolate bars he managed to consume while working there. I read it in a New York Times Travel section article on visiting his home.

(Thank God I've never saved chocolate wrappers! They'd weigh considerably more than 10 lbs!)

Then, if Dahl had been hired to write the Bond film that preceded YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE, THUNDERBALL might've ened up being called "Wrapperball"...
