I just got the 2003 Vangelis compilation album. I think the album is very much focusing on his film music, eschewing many other important releases. You can of course not get a 100 % representative collection on a 75 minute album, but I think two tracks each from Blade Runner, L'Apocalypse Des Animaux and The Friends Of Mr Cairo were unneccessary. Why not put in a track each from Direct, The City and Voices, for instance, instead of two each from the aforementioned ones? That said, the two tracks from Animaux (La Petite Fille De La Mer and L'Enfant) were, musically, a real positive surprise. Already in 1973 Vangelis were composing listener-friendly and professional-sounding electronic music, while Tangerine Dream was releasing abstract sound-collages, and Jarre was clearly more primitive with Deserted Palace and Les Granges Brulees. Kraftwerk too, really. Chariots Of Fire is really a bit too much Richard Claydermann-sounding for me - Antarctica only two years later is far better IMO. Theme From Cavafy is an exciting ambient-like piece, Celtic Dawn is quite enjoyable too, and I can even get some enjoyment from the 2002 Football World Cup theme. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Odyssey:_The_Definitive_Collection Opinions?
