Thor, your review convinced me to give this score a try, and I just bought the CD.

However, are you sure Prisoners is Johannsson's "magnum opus"?

In terms of film music, yes. But in terms of concert works, it's hard to beat ORPHÉE, IMO. I'm not sure MANDY is your cup of tea, to be honest, but I think ORPHÉE definitely is. So definitely check THAT out. It's on Spotify, I think, on the Deutsche Grammophon label.

I know ORPHÉE very well, and I think it's terribly boring. I actually can't remember even a single work by Johannsson that I like, except maybe a few snippets from THEORY OF EVERYTHING.

That said, you'll be surprised by my thoughts about MANDY, because I kinda liked it. It's definitelly not a score I'll listen to often, but there is something "eclectic" in it that I found appealing. The track "Children of the New Dawn" reminds me of some of those 80s dark action movies (Carpenter and alike) I grew up watching.

I see. Shame on me for thinking I knew your taste inside-out! big grin I'm both surprised you disliked ORPHÉE and liked MANDY.

MANDY is an absolute Masterpiece! I am absolutely in love with the score and rate it right there with SICARIO.

Sorry, Thor 'Prisoners' is not his magnum opus although an excellent score and film. 'SICARIO' is the film score "Magnum Opus" and this a close second edging out 'Miner's Hymn's' My goodness I'm defying the Nordic film expert. smile. Anyway, am I not the Johannsson expert here? Just joking.

I can't see how anyone could not LOVE 'Orphee' which is his greatest work. My dream would be to give everyone a copy of 'Orphee'. It's that stunning.

I was lucky to have picked up last vinyl copy of 'Mandy' at hmv while I was in UK past week. Red.

Love your enthusiasm McCurry. Unfortunately, MANDY doesn't QUITE reach the level of PRISONERS for me, but it's there among the favourites in the 'second group' (THEORY OF EVERYTHING, MCCANNICK, ARRIVAL). Was never as thrilled with SICARIO as everyone else, I'm afraid.

But it IS a fine score indeed.

I aim to explore his Icelandic, pre-US work more thoroughly in the years to come.

And yes, ORPHÉE is stunningly beautiful.

Unlike Onya, i hate this film. But i do enjoy the score. Especially away from the film.

Sicario is still my most played of Johansson's, but i think this one will grow on me.

I just looked at the trailer, and read the synopsis on a few websites...
Who the FUCK would want to WATCH SUCH GARBAGE?!?!?!?!?!?! This piece of celluloid trash is....well.... TRASH. There's no reason for this type of film to exist. Okay.... lay into me!

Hey Jim, what do you mean by "this type of film"? I didn't read a synopsis or see anything about it until i saw it. Its just an incredibly basic revenge thriller when you boil it down.

How can you come to such bombastic conclusions without even having seen the film, Jim?

It's an absolutely fabulous piece of cinema, riffing off familiar tropes of the revenge genre while very much doing its own thing. One of my favourite films of the year.

That’s what you want, isn’t it?! Well I can’t, because I haven’t seen it. But when I do, at least one of us will be sorry. Maybe both.

It's a really, really terrible film. It's down there with thev worst i've seen. Empty and pretentious. It let's Cage go full Cage only because that's a thing people joke about on the internet. It makes a chainsaw fight boring. Everything is spoken... very...slow...ly...cuz...it... wants...you...to...know...it's...im...por...tant... It's the Emperor's New Clothes of films.

But the music is good. And if you ever wanted to see Linus Roache's tackle, this is the film to watch. And Andrea Riseborough is really good despite having nothing to do. She can work magic, that lass.

The minute I saw the sheep-like critics all falling over themselves to herald this new (usually direct to DVD) Nicholas Cage Opus, I smelled a rat.
I never got past the first half hour or so.
If it looks like shit and smells like shit...it usually IS shit.

It's very funny to read the favorite films of some of the people who went on record as hating "Mandy."

Take a few moments out of your life to click on the profiles of some of the detractors. It will be well worth it. wink

Now, if someone with a true appreciation of cult and exploitation cinema has issues with the film, I would be more than happy to read his or her thoughts.

Oh, you should never do that Onya. It means nothing really. Just a flat list of a top ten films or something? For example just because a person lists Jaws, Batman, The Meg, Cheney and Speed Racer doesn't mean they won't like or don't understand other stuff horror or westerns or Japanese films or exploitation.

Also, personally, i do have an appreciation of cult and exploitation cinema. I sort of have wide and varied tastes in general. But i don't think it makes my opinion about Mandy more valid than if i didn't.

Point taken. However, favorite films and favorite composers at least provide useful reference points.

Incidentally, your profile does not list any favorite films. Neither does mine, probably.

Good call Wanderer.
You can visit here to read others' opinions and agree or disagree...OR...try and act/feel superior or alt/cool and diss anyone who doesn't share your views.
Btw Onya, there is no 'favourite films' section in the user profiles, only favourite scores. You must have read that wrong.
And yeah, if you like populist entertainment or mondo-bizarro (or hey, even both), one doesn't really take precedent over the other.
