1. Install Audacity 2. Install ffmpeg libraries into Audacity 3. Import your music flies into Audacity and edit your ringtone. Make sure track is less than 30 seconds long. 4. Export in the .m4a format. 5. Manually change .m4a extension to .m4r 6. Drag and drop into iPhone
Drag and drop into iPhone doesn't work anymore either. Trust me, I've tried...after I think 12.1 they eliminated it.
I went to confirm after reading your post and I am still able to do it. They don’t have the “Tones” section anymore but if your iPhone is plugged in, you can drag from your desktop and drop directly into the phone in the sidebar. Ringtones show up for my in my sounds settingns.
I find ringtones of any kind insanely annoying. I would even call it disturbing the peace and noise pollution. By law all phones should be on vibrate.
Vibrating has several disadvantages though. For one, "vibrate" is only useful if you phone is actually on your body. That is not always the case with phones. And then, "vibrate" cannot differentiate between various incoming messages as well. But it's useful if you are on the go in a loud area.

I’ve used Twisted Nerve as a ringtone for about 10 years. Good job we don’t work together as my work landline defaults to my mobile as a matter of course. You’d have had us for constructive dismissal long before now!
True story, last week we had a company meeting and one of the employees ring tones went off while our superior was talking. She was not pleased and scolded the employee, but all of us in general about putting our phones on vibrate. Then she introduced a new employee she hired who is an acquaintance of hers. When the new hire got up to speak to us her ring tone went off and the volume was maxed out!
Hoist by her own petard... nice.
I’ve turned my phone all the way off in team meetings rather than just put it on “do not disturb” ever since the time I slowly realised everyone was looking at me and I became aware of a little voice coming from my shirt pocket. Somehow I’d managed to ring my wife just by putting the phone in there.

Drag and Drop Does work. You have to go to tone section when your phone is plugged into your computer.
Open itunes.
Drag the tone you want as a ringtone and hit sync
Itunes just does not recognize what is on your phone currently.

I tried to recording the Superman theme by holding my phone near my speakers and I felt it came out just awful. I have good speakers too, so it wasn't that. I tjust sounded like it was recorded far away.
The problem with most film music as a ring tone is that you generally answer your phone in less than five seconds and most film music hasn't even got going by then.
I'll tell you one track that works really well as a phone ring tone—Church Organ from King Kong (1976).
It actually has the perfect attributes for a ring tone.
Music in which there's an intro and a melody that needs to develop—basically anything that doesn't have its hook in the first three seconds, and that means pretty much all film themes—actually makes for really sucky ring tones. They just don't have the right attributes to be used for that purpose.
I have ringtones set for individual contacts IE: family and friends but for all other calls I'll generally change it up but currently got the Main Titles from Star Trek Voyager an edited down version of course.
