For Tom: Typical size of an orchestra is usually 80 to 100 musicians in the concert world. And there are scores by Berlioz and Mahler for instance that go well over that, and on the other hand many times the full orchestra isn't used. Often the main issue is having enough strings to balance the more powerful noises winds and brass make (says a former put-upon strung player wink).

For film music there is an infinite variety, but I'd say this is a more or less standard otchestra, with some extension as mentioned.

I've heard of the movie never seen it though, another JG score I know bugger all about, I did read wiki the other day after this release, funny the movie was another pooper Goldsmith worked on every think was out of place in this movie it was originally set for 1990. Anyway COOL never had the original score so I might as well nab this soon.

This is one of Goldsmith's best of the decade (and of his entire career, IMO) leagolfer. If you dig other scores of his with middle eastern elements (Justine, The Wind and the Lion, QB VII) you should love this one. Excited to hear what you think!

The movie is a very entertaining, colorful, and fast-paced adventure with engaging actors playing engaging characters. It's all done in Saturday matinee style with tongue firmly planted in cheek. I really get tired of people dogging it. It was a smash hit - not that popularity necessarily indicates quality - and deserved to be. I've seen it countless times and always enjoy it. At the very very least, it's a marvelous showcase for Goldsmith's magnificent score.

I wouldn’t go so far as to say one of the best of his career or anything, but of the 90s, I’ll give you that.

Yep, it's an agreeably goofy adventure, very well made. Just the kind of movie that the cool crowd likes to hate razz .
The Blu Ray looks spectacular, and the score has been one of my favorite Goldsmith efforts, big, sweeping and tons of fun. According to USPS, the Intrada edition, along with The Mummy Returns, will be here on Friday big grin

That's why for the parenthetical I was sure to include "IMO". wink

I know, that’s the only reason I didn’t scream TOTAL RECALL at you this time.

I suppose it's not one of his *best* scores, but it certainly is one of my favorites of the master's. Mmmm, top 10? Top 15?

Let’s start a(nother) top 10 thread for this?

I'm hardly a Goldsmith nut like others on here but I *love* this score.

Wow! What an sonic upgrade! The raw isolated DVD has nothing on this. Incredible - can hear so much more from the mix now. What a release. Well done Intrada!

Surprised source music seems to have been left off by the looks. Not end of the world. Was that JG too, or traditional?

Ah, the raw, "can-only-play-from-start-to-finish" isolated DVD score ... which prompted me to buy the original release for better sound quality ... although I still played the isolated cues once in a while ... which I can now dispense with for the new release ... except for those riverboat piano source cues ... which begs the previous question if Mr. Goldsmith did or did not compose them. Does anyone know?

Yeah, well put. One of his better "later" scores.

Goldsmith did not compose the source. I too got so used to the isolated score track that I will also miss it, so I’ll probably hold onto the poorer sounding rip just for nostalgia even though this will obviously replace it for normal listening. Someone at JWFan figured out the origin of the source cues:

I would have rather had the source cues over the padding of the original pretty much 100% redundant album, myself...

The rest of the Intrada set is a unique, newly-created mix (which, yes, will likely sound almost exactly the same to most). It does bother me, aesthetically, that the original album is not its own disc instead of being tacked on as additional tracks, but obviously I understand the why. Just OCD on my part. Haha

This and The Mummy Returns showed up in my mailbox today - holy crap these babies are beautiful. eek

Kinda skimmed through the Silvestri first and it sounds fantastic, listening to the Goldsmith now. It's great, really, just fabulous. Great , lovely packaging and top notch liner notes, too.

Thanks, Intrada...this cheered me up today, my last few weeks have sucked ( broke my kneecap at work and have been on worker's compensation ) , so this showed up at the right time big grin

Anyone else get theirs today?

Indeed I did! (and Rocket Gibraltar, too!) Here's a picture. This is why we soundtrack fans love CDs. It's like Christmas all year long. (Get well soon, Mike)

Wow, what an amazing listen from start to finish!

I've had the Decca album since the summer of 99 and was pretty familiar with the isolated score track. But this presentation by Intrada was a revelation for a Goldsmith score I thought I knew backwards and forwards. Absolutely amazing sound quality... I love all the new details I've never heard before. It feels like there's a real depth to the orchestration that I've completely missed in this score over the years. And I love having an official release of the End Credits assembly. Thanks, Intrada!

Next up: Mummy Returns!

What's typical size of an orchestra? Intrada says Jerry conducted a 90 piece orchestra for The Mummy. That sounds huge to me.

Cynical me who spent too much time in or near the film industry would say that the "typical size of an orchestra" is whatever number of musicians will impress the person paying for the sessions.
