LLL's reputation on "Archival" titles should overcome any doubt in what it might mean coming from them: the same great stuff you always get from them. It's not a comment on the source material. I would anticipate any release requiring less-than-ideal sources to be made clear, Archival or not, as it is on their release of Batman.

Well that's the thing. Looking purely and coldly at this list, what assumptions would the average Joe make:

The Satan Bug: Archival Edition
Fitzwilly: Archival Edition
The Private Life Of Sherlock Holmes: Archival Edition
Batman: Archival Edition
Forever Young: Archival Edition
The Matrix Revolutions: Archival Edition

Not sure why anyone would be worked up about the "expanded archival collection" banner on Matrix Revolutions. LLL has made it very clear in the past what it means. The "Expanded Archival Collection" title means that it's a Warner Bros expansion. It has nothing to do with the quality of the tapes for any given release. I believe they've said that the EAC title comes from the same legal/contractual business that keeps them from releasing PREMIERE Warner Bros albums, such as Batman and Robin.

As for the elements, rather than compare the title with "archival" albums from all over the spectrum of labels, why not look at LLL's specific list of EAC albums?

Batman: Mask of the Phantasm (Expanded Archival Collection)
Mars Attacks! (Expanded Archival Collection)
The Fugitive (Expanded Archival Collection)
Eraser (Expanded Archival Collection)
Batman (Expanded Archival Collection)
Batman Returns (Expanded Archival Collection)
Forever Young (Expanded Archival Collection)
Batman Forever (Expanded Archival Collection)
Dave (Expanded Archival Collection)

I've never understood the complaints about the sound on Batman, personally, but there are five other albums on that list that I have, about which I have heard nothing but positive-to-glowing things re: the sound. If it hadn't been Warner's anniversary last year, all of those wonderful releases with the red banner on top, including The Matrix Reloaded, Rosewood, and Black Beauty, would have been "expanded archival" releases as well.

There are a few trouble spots admittedly in Batman, but nothing that distracts from the whole listening experience.

I want the new recording of the Great "BLUE MAX" not a rerererererererererererererere-lease with the same imperfections. I will not buy it, don't waste our time and money.

Your attitude stinks. You don't know any details about this new release but are already condemning it for having the same imperfections. And even if 'rebuilt from the ground up by Michael Mattesino and Neil Bulk' wasn't good enough for you, you still shouldn't begrudge the re-release because Intrada's issue sold out it's 2500 copies lightening quick (this was released before Intrada's new business model, and was probably one of the reasons for the change -- same goes for Flesh and Blood, which sold out 2000 copies in a day or so). Do you not want anyone else (some of whom weren't even in this game at the time of the last release) to be unable to get the original recording of this masterpiece?

And how was LLL to know that Mr. Fitzpatrick had plans to record the complete score for his new series? Up to this point the Goldsmith re recording series has ONLY done complete scores for which original tapes do not survive at all in any condition. So give LLL a break; they've given us so much (and probably have other more essential Goldsmith expansions coming later this year) and it sounds like Mr. Fitzpatrick is still planning on doing this in a couple years, at a time when its sales potential will be better

After all, he already invested in the full reconstruction...

No need for personal attacks and name calling, I love LaLa, but a new recording of "Blue Max" would be wonderful and thrilling. Grow Up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You accuse LLL of wasting our time and money without even knowing the full details of this release or hearing sound clips. You yell at ME to grow up?

Who's name calling here? All I said was that your attitude stinks, which it does, and then went through a reasoned explanation of why (which was much less harshly worded). Where was the personal attack? If anything 'grow up!' with a zillion exclamation marks qualifies a bit more I should think.

As a fellow Goldsmith lover I want a new Blue Max recording too, you know. I just felt your post was much less respectful and considered towards LaLaLand than my post was towards you.

Yavar did not make personal insults nor did he call you any names; he's just calling it as he sees it. And I happen to agree with him too.

Don't want it? Don't buy it. Don't waste your energy complaining about a product you haven't seen yet.

Can't we just go back to arguing what the word "archival" means?

Finally, we've found something to distract away from the other pissing and moaning about a label re-issuing a title.

Not what I'd hoped for, though.

I don't know why people complain about any release, period...

Go release it yourself then. Good luck.

As I stated GROW UP!

Since you have decided to grace me with your fine considered advice, I'll certainly...OH! You want me to GROW UP? Well...I was already doing that. It's quite hard not to, really. Damned entropy. smile I'll be hitting 30 soon and I already feel like a crotchety old man in some ways. Age will get us all in the end I suppose.

Which is perhaps why you're so anxious to get THE BLUE MAX AS SOON AS POSSIBLE (caps or many exclamation marks clearly necessary) that you can't stand *any* delay, even if it allows some other people to be able to purchase one of Goldsmith's best scores in its original recording.

If anybody is justified in throwing a tantrum about LLL's release, it's James Fitzpatrick himself because he'd already paid for the complete reconstruction and was probably on the verge of recording it! I know that would frustrate me. But what was his reaction? He just ruefully decided to shrug it off and just wait a couple more years before recording it. Good thing LLL didn't wait until after he paid for *sessions* or he might have been upset...

Anyway, I guess what I'm really trying to say is, BRAVO MR. FITZPATRICK on your healthy attitude! I'm excited to eventually be getting a new Blue Max recording, and until then I really look forward to whatever other new recordings you do in your wonderful Goldsmith series.*

Yavar

*pssst, Mr. Eastman...perhaps on these there will be more totally unreleased music from scores that aren't fortunate enough to have surviving tapes in any condition! Let's be glass-half-full about this!

If a re-recording of Blue Max is of the quality of The Alamo, El Cid, Private Life of Sherlock Holmes and other superb Tadlow efforts, that's great.
But if the powerful passages end up sounding like the Conan the Barbarian and Quo Vadis re-recordings, I'll be very grateful indeed for LLL's version.
I like the idea of having the "insurance" of the LLL.

It is sad that a few entitled assholes believe that the niche market for classic soundtracks should revolve around their own preferences and previous purchasing history. If you don't want it, don't buy it. I've enjoyed the original Blue Max recording under Goldsmith made at Shepperton for many years in 3 previous CD incarnations and can't wait to hear what LLL have done to it.

Flesh and blood, is a great score by the great Basil. I think it should always be in print for new buyers and anyone who's missed it in the past. Great its back again! I own the Prometeus and intrada discs and both get a lot of play time. I am tempted to buy it again and will do so if its available in about a half year from now, but i hope its long gone by then and lots of people are enjoying it for the first time!
More or less the same goes for The blue max.
And i do hope a new recording will be made, i'll buy it immediatly smile

Until then, great job from LaLaLand to make them available again for those who want them and could not get them!

I guess (or better: hope) the 1200 units of FLESH + BLOOD last until the 25th. Then an order together with THE BLUE MAX is "inevitable". big grin

Thanks a lot, LLL! cool

James Fitz - about any re-recording of BM. Now, this is nothing to do with the technical details of the medium. I always felt that the main part of the percussion was slightly out in timing during the lead-in part to The Attack. I'm amazed JG never insisted on doing it AGAIN!

You've got the drums pounding at the start. That would be snares and, I dunno, a bass drum which is the singular drum you can hear slightly out of phase. It's ok right up to before that distinctive part of the germanic theme with the brass comes in. But when the orchestra does strike in during that first entry of the brass, that bloody drum is out just enough to draw attention to itself.

It still sounds great. One is tempted to think it wasn't thrown out because the rest of the orchestra rose to the occasion sufficiently to bury the bad news. But I can still hear it. Does anyone else familiar with the score find that slightly errant drum a sticking point?

So, here's the thing. When you do the re-recording please get that drum, which has an important role in emphasising the rhythm - BANG ON! wink
