Always remember Jerry's story of how the producers told him they liked his music but were thinking of retaining the temp score track of Richard Strauss's Also sprach Zarathustra for the main theme. Not wanting to forfeit his first roadshow picture (IN HARM"S WAY was released normally here) he asked them to give him one more crack at it and came up with the BLUE MAX theme that blew me away and sealed my estimation of him as a major composer.

Thor, it's ok you dont like it, but... how can you say this is not a THEMATIC score?!?!

Oh, it's definitely thematic. It's just too damn NOISY.

"The Blue Max" is a masterwork...and it has a number of beautiful pastoral passages. Thor complains of blaring horns, but what I hear overall is some of the most soaring string writing Goldsmith ever did. As far is it being "rousing" within the film, I find it less rousing than impassioned. It's not a clang-bang score as Thor seems to imply, but rather a score that lifts the film far above what it might have been with a different/more traditional war film score. This is not just a story about an ambitious man's quest for glory...it's about FLIGHT at a time when wars were fought in the air...and Goldsmith's score captures that soaring adventurousness with passages that highlight both its beauty and its ugliness.

This is by far one of my five favorite Goldsmith scores.

Yes. If nothing else, it would be interesting to see how it works in context. Unfortunately, there are so many films I need to see that are way ahead of BLUE MAX, so it might be a while.

I've heard not a note of THE BLUE MAX, nor have I seen the film, but I'll be picking this one up. I have no doubt it's a masterful score and I look forward to experiencing it for the first time.

The longer the better. Hopefully I'll be flying in heaven like a Blue Max pilot before you get around to posting your appraisal of it.

Listening to Intrada's sound clips, completists shouldn't throw out their Sony CDs just yet! It's the only place to hear the solo piano version of the 'Love Theme' as it was recorded and used in the film (it plays as source music under the dinner scene that follows 'The Attack').

For Goldsmith's original LP edit, he used this piano solo to replace the shorter middle section of 'Stachel's Confession.' Intrada's CD duplicates this composer-approved assembly (although the cross-fade to the piano still sounds rather awkward to my ears) and also includes 'Stachel's Confession' in its intact form. But the 'Love Theme' piano solo is NOT presented as it was in the film, and as it was on the Sony CD. It's all there, of course ... it's just a question of being able to listen to it on its own, without any repeated bars from elsewhere in the score. That's an admittedly small thing, but if you're obsessive about these details hang on to the Sony.

This is just an observation regarding the assembly of the album; I'm not trying to dissuade anyone from buying what looks (and sounds) to be a fantastic release!

As one critic observed, the film is superb when it is in the air, less so on the ground. I wouldn't go out of your way to see it. But the score is an absolute masterpiece.

I bought this right away too. It's one of the few Goldsmith scores that I really like and will listen to repeatedly. I've had the Sony Legacy release and I've always disliked the sound on it. I'm grateful to Intrada for getting it out and getting it right.

Here's a wish: To have copies of scores released on Blu-ray disc without the use of compression. It would truly be something to hear a score such as The Blue Max just as the Mastering Engineer does directly from the master. I know that this would be highly unlikely, but that's why it's a wish.

To me, it was simply too bombastic, lots of "screaming" brass and percussion that went on and on.

A tiresome piece. I heard it too. A young man trying to impress beyond his abilities... Too much spice... Too many notes.

Whether you think it Goldsmith's best or no, it's certainly a showcase of his craftsmanship and scope like no other.

I agree with you totally WILLIAMD!!! You're probably the person to ask this question: I love the 'Retreat' cue - but in the film I noticed that it starts but then seems to be dialed out once the strafing of the troops starts - and then returns later. Is this what happened? Did Jerry write for the entire bit (including strafing)
and then someone figured the mid-section didn't need music!?

I have seen a video, on You Tube I believe, where the entire musical cue is left intact.
It appears the director dialed down portions of the cue jerry had written

Not at'all surprised. It was one of the man's greatest 1960's scores, now done and presented to a turn...

Let the scoffers burn...

What a complete jackass, do you even like music? Your three favorite composers indicates your tadpole brain size.

I've listened to the sound samples, and I really like them! I've recently been listening to Goldsmith's RAMBO FIRST BLOOD PART 2, and really like that one too.
