And a great beginning to the second half for the Yankees! Trailing 5-2 going into the 8th, a three-run HR from Teixeirea, and a clutch two out hit from the slumping Russell Martiin enabled them to beat the Angels 6-5. Up to then, the Yankees perpetual problem of plating runners in scoring position with less than two outs had been rearing again in the 6th and 7th innings. To see them string together a big two-out rally after the tying HR was quite impressive.

Soriano delivered again in the 9th inning. The Angels actually ran themselves into defeat as a runner was thrown out trying to advance on a potential wild pitch to end the game.

Rough opening to the second half for the Mets down in Atlanta.

The Mets got surprisingly good starting pitching in the first half and that has to continue if they want to stay within striking distance of a playoff spot this year. They simply don't have the firepower up and down in their lineup at this point to make up for too many bad outings from the rotation. They've had a great year so far with the pieces they have, and it's a good foundation for the future.

The young Ruben Tejada taking over at shortstop for the departed Jose Reyes has been a revelation. He's been outstanding in the field defensively, and also has shown himself to be an extremely smart hitter at the plate. He will make a pitcher work. So many important hits from him this season and he'll only get better.

On the downside..

The Mets patchwork family bullpen will need to be overhauled once again this offseason. The bullpen has killed them this year. GM Alderson did the best he could on paper last winter without spending a fortune, and guys like Francisco, Rauch, and Ramirez have all been exposed.

Bobby Parnell has been up and down so far, now he's on an upswing as the closer with Frank Francisco on the disabled list. We'll see how long that lasts.

40 year old Miguel Batista flat out stinks. He's not fooling anybody anymore. Is it any wonder he's chalked up all those frequent flyer miles in his career? Sure, he eats up innings as an inexpensive veteran arm, but the guy continues to get lit up in middle relief burying a team that is already struggling to score runs. He needs to go. Carasco was aleady shown the door, Batista should be next. The Mets should have held on to Jason Isringhausen. He is still a hell of a lot more reliable even at his age than Batista.

The Mets will be better down the road. There are some good young arms down on the farm that will be ready in a year or two. Matt Harvey and Zack Wheeler are in the plans as key parts of the future Mets rotation. Both are pitching well in the minors this season.

There has been a lot of talk recently about the trade deadline. Most of the decent bullpen help that will be available are guys on second division teams that have bloated contracts their present teams are looking to unload. The rest are guys that are probably not much better than what the Mets already have.

The Mets don't need any more Miguel Batistas.

Yanks beat the Angels again, 5-3. Freddy Garcia guts through five innings, allowing three runs and then the bullpen again stepped to the forefront with four shutout innings. Big homers from Cano and Granderson paced the offense.

The team's ability to overcome all their potentially devastating injuries has been the storyline for the Yankees this year and with Pettitte and Joba Chamberlain likely to return in August, it also negates the need for them to seriously explore the trade market prior to the deadline (even more so if Brett Gardner is able to come back). The offense still has its problems with runners in scoring position, but it's been able to overcome that so far.

Yankees almost stage a miracle 9th inning comeback against the Angels, while trailing 10-5 but fall just short at 10-8. Granderson came within a few feet of a game-winning grand slam HR that was just foul, while A-Rod popped out to end it with the tying run at second alas. The real failure was the poor outing by Nova and some ineffective relief pitching that failed to contain the Angels in the key late innings. Even so, the comeback still cements the Yankees as a dangerous team capable of anything in the late stages who can't be counted out.

A tight duel between the Yankees and Blue Jays through eight ends when Raul Ibanez blasts a grand slam HR, icing the Yankees victory at 6-3. Phil Hughes, despite a no-decision, pitched well.

Bad news for the Blue Jays in that they may have lost their best hitter, Jose Bautista, who left after seemingly injuring himself on a hard swing.

The Mets were swept by the Atlanta Braves down in Atlanta over the weekend. And the road trip doesn't get any easier as they now head to Washington to face the tough division leading Nationals in a series starting tonight.

The starting pitching the Mets depended on in the first half has not been there so far in the second. Santana and Dickey have had several rough outings in a row going back before the break. That needs to change or the Mets will fall out of the race quickly.

Veteran ace Santana has really not been the same since the no-hitter against St. Louis. Is he tiring as the innings mount? Keep in mind he's coming back from a year off following major pitching shoulder surgery. Santana is a gamer, a proud athlete. If he is having physical problems he won't come out and say it but his pitching perfomances lately have told their own story.

Dickey is a knuckleballer who can pitch a ton of innings if need be, but he has not been in command of his signature pitch since the end of the first half. Hitters are not stupid, and the word is probably getting out on different approaches to hitting his knuckleball. Dickey hasn't been able to reach that elusive 13th win in quite a while now. He needs to re-adjust and bounce back.

Are the Mets as good as they were in the first half or were they playing over their heads?

I think they are a team on the rise still missing some pieces. There is a lot of good young talent already on the ballclub. Mets fans have taken what they've been given this season and given that this team was predicted to be in the basement at this point we can't get overly upset by recent events.

Clearly, the Mets have been helped along this season by the dramatic collapse of the perpetual powerhouse Philadelphia Phillies, and by the Braves early season up and down play which has helped allow the inconsistant Mets to stay close in the division race. The Braves are now heating up. The Marlins, who spent a ton of cash on star players last winter have never been a factor. Nobody expected Washington to take command of the division the way they have so far and their consistantly good starting pitching this season has placed them head and shoulders above everyone else in the NL east.

The Mets can't seem to get any kind of long winning streak going. Even when the starting pitching was at it's best. The offense gets going for a few games, everyone gets excited, and then it sputters. This is the traditional pattern of a .500 team. The Mets never make it easy on themselves to stay comfortably over the .500 mark. But they have been competative this year and have made it fun once again to watch their ballgames. Their bullpen has been horrible, and to stay as competitive as they have with that gorilla on their back factoring in is amazing in itself. Speaking of a gorilla on the Mets back, Jason Bay is scheduled to come off the disabled list and will probably be penciled in to start tonight in left field.

It's ironic that former Met Carlos Beltran is having the kind of season he's now having in St. Louis. A veteran power bat like his is just what the Mets need at this point to help balance the lineup. In reality, it was time for him to go when he did. They were not going to re-sign him. When the Mets traded Beltran away to San Francisco they got prized minor league pitching prospect Zack Wheeler in return. Wheeler has kept on progressing through the minors and is considered one of the best pitching prospects in baseball.

Patience..

Sabathia's first start since coming off the DL is a solid 6 plus innings of shutout ball, while Andruw Jones slugs another big homer to help the Yankees to their 6-1 victory over the Blue Jays. The only sour note was some struggling pitching by Chad Qualls, who has not been good his last few outings that forced Girardi to use Soriano for the final two outs since Qualls and Clay Rapada (who made a bonehead play on a swinging bunt) created a save situation by loading the bases in the ninth. Fortunately, Soriano only needed to face one batter as a line-drive DP to Texieirea ended the game.

Was flipping over to the Mets-Nats game as well since I always like a chance to see the Nats after going to a couple of their games, and that was a devastating loss for the Mets on all levels, and a big win for Washington. With the Giants clobbering the Braves (the dull game on MLB Network) that lets the Nats open up a game on 2nd and 3rd in the NL East.

The bullpen woes continue for the Mets.

The Mets fought back twice late in this game against Washington and their bullpen collapsed both times. Again.

Terry Collins can only do so much with that bunch out in the bullpen. Everytime he makes a move out there on the mound shuffling pitchers around you are always waiting for the other shoe to drop.

Closer Bobby Parnell tried plan B and instead of throwing 100mph fastballs right down the middle as usual he surprised the Nationals hitters with a steady diet of breaking balls. He had some success doing that. Of course, when he returned to his fastball he got beat and blew the save.

Tim Byrdak faired no better. Byrdak was actually pretty good early in the season and was a go to guy but his recent efforts have gone downhill like the rest of the bullpen.

Pedro Beato was brought in by Collins and threw the wild pitch with a runner on third and the game was over. Terry Collins is an emotional guy and I don't think he's going to get much sleep at the hotel tonight after this one.

Brutal loss for the Mets. This was a game they should have had, a game they needed to have, and the bullpen couldn't hold it once again.
This team has fought back all season, but I'm not sure how many more of these type of losses they can stand.

Brutal loss is how I felt too. This team sends you on a roller coaster this season that has no end. Still more baseball ahead, but sometimes they just find ways to lose.

Fortunately, the rain stayed away long enough in the Bronx to let the Yankees get seven innings in and sweep the Blue Jays with a 6-0 triumph! A big HR from Teixeira and solid pitching from Kuroda led the way.

Scary moment for the Blue Jays when their third baseman, Brett Lawrie reached into the camera well to try and catch a foul pop and he tumbled in and bruised himself in what could have been a serious injury. The solid concrete of that area does not give a person anything to cushion himself on if something like that happens.

The Yankees are on all cylinders now but a big lead can collapse at any time so no point getting cocky.

The Yankees are not going to collapse Eric. Nooo. Nope.

It must be so relaxing being a Yankee fan because it's almost a given that they are going to hit home runs and win every night! wink

What are they now, 23 games over .500 or some such number? They are just beating up every pitching staff they face with those power bats and scoring runs in bunches. No lead is safe against that Yankee lineup.
Manufacture runs? What's that? I can't remember a time watching baseball when I've seen such dominance with the home run as the prime weapon.
The pitching staff has been doing a good job through the injuries but when you have an offense like that backing you up their pitchers can get away with making a few mistakes.

When the Yankees do lose once in a while (which is rare this year) you'd think it was the first night at a wake the way Kay and Singleton hang their heads on the wrap up show on YES after the game. Take it easy guys, you're over 20 games over .500!

The Yankees will coast into the playoffs. Of course, as we are aware, anything can happen in a short series in the fall but unless that veteran lineup goes into some late season collective swoon (which I highly doubt) they have to be the favorites at this point to make it to the WS.

The bad bullpen is a big part of it.

Their record could be a lot better if the bullpen would have come through. The bullpen is lousy, and we just have to deal with it for now. The last thing I want Sandy Alderson to do is bring in somebody else's contract headache closer and possibly give up minor leaguers in a deal when this team is not yet ready to make a deep playoff run. The Mets might have to pick up all or part of a large contract in a deal, and I don't know if they are ready to commit to that.

The Mets are a team in transition. We know that. Despite the success this year, they are rebuilding and are playing the best they can most nights given the talent they have. It's been tough as a Mets fan getting a little taste of success and then having the rug pulled out. It's a process, and some good young players on the farm may be ready as soon as spring training next year.

I don't expect them to get far in the playoffs even if they were to make it this year. But they have played some exciting baseball this season and have given the fans hope for next year and beyond. And that's a lot more than was expected this season.

Verlander and the Tigers took the first game from the White Sox and the Tigers climb to within a half game of first place in the central division. smile

Not an auspicious beginning for the Yankee road trip as they lose the first two games to Oakland, who's really played well of late. In losing last night, the Yankee streak of 40 plus games of scoring three runs at least also came to an end.

Anz, the last three nights are a reminder to me of why I will NEVER take that attitude in any season, period. So far, the Yankees have looked terrible as they now lose three in a row in Oakland and are fast revealing their biggest chink in their armor which is an inability to deliver timely hits in clutch situations and rely too much on the longball, which if they get shut down by good pitching is going to be worthless for them. If this keeps up then this is a team that could flame out fast in the first round in the tradition of the cold bat choke artists of the 05-06-07 ALDS losers.

Phil Hughes pitched a great game but gave up two solo home runs that proved the difference.

The lead just like that drops to seven games as Baltimore wins another one. What you build up fast in the standings can disappear just as fast if you hit one slump and so far, they are in their first bona fide slump in a long while.

I'm not sure about 05 and 07, but in 06 Kenny Rogers and Tiger pitching and hitting shut down the Yankees. Kenny was shutting down everyone that year in the post season...then we got to the Series and the Cards beat us up.

Well, my recollection of '06 is of Mike Mussina spitting the bit in Game 2 and the bats going cold preventing the Yankees from putting a 2-0 stranglehold on the series. smile (my reactions to that series as it unfolded are preserved in the early pages of this thread!)

And neither Anz nor I will ever have a kind word to say about the postseason pitching prowess of Kenny Rogers! big grin

There are quite a few "reactions" in the early (and not so early) pages of this thread! wink

Kenny Rogers pitched for both the NY Yankees and the NY Mets and with a few other teams, but mostly he's remembered as a Texas Ranger. To be nice about it, I'll just say I won't thank him for the memories. wink big grin

Nice ceremony today at Cooperstown NY at the Baseball Hall of Fame induction for Barry Larkin and the late Ron Santo. MLB Network is covering it once again.

There was a moving tribute at the start of ceremonies to the late Montreal Expos and New York Mets star catcher and Hall of Famer Gary Carter, one of the best in the business behind the plate and with the bat in his generation. His wife and friends are present.

I'll never forget all Gary Carter did after he came to the Mets from Montreal in the mid 1980's to help settle down a good young pitching staff with his solid veteran leadership. He was a huge part of the Mets 1986 World Championship. He did so much for others apart from the game as well, and his warm friendly smile is missed.

Congratulations to both Barry Larkin and Ron Santo who officially become Hall of Famers today.

It had been a long wait for Santo who had health problems for most of his life and sadly passed away in 2010 at age 70.

The Tigers finish a sweep over the White Sox. Future Hall of Famer Miggy Cabrera hit homers 299 and 300. Homers also added by Quentin Berry and Brennan Boesch. Detroit pulls 1 & 1/2 games ahead of Chicago. Off tomorrow and then on to Cleveland.
