Rough opening to the second half for the Mets down in Atlanta. The Mets got surprisingly good starting pitching in the first half and that has to continue if they want to stay within striking distance of a playoff spot this year. They simply don't have the firepower up and down in their lineup at this point to make up for too many bad outings from the rotation. They've had a great year so far with the pieces they have, and it's a good foundation for the future. The young Ruben Tejada taking over at shortstop for the departed Jose Reyes has been a revelation. He's been outstanding in the field defensively, and also has shown himself to be an extremely smart hitter at the plate. He will make a pitcher work. So many important hits from him this season and he'll only get better. On the downside.. The Mets patchwork family bullpen will need to be overhauled once again this offseason. The bullpen has killed them this year. GM Alderson did the best he could on paper last winter without spending a fortune, and guys like Francisco, Rauch, and Ramirez have all been exposed. Bobby Parnell has been up and down so far, now he's on an upswing as the closer with Frank Francisco on the disabled list. We'll see how long that lasts. 40 year old Miguel Batista flat out stinks. He's not fooling anybody anymore. Is it any wonder he's chalked up all those frequent flyer miles in his career? Sure, he eats up innings as an inexpensive veteran arm, but the guy continues to get lit up in middle relief burying a team that is already struggling to score runs. He needs to go. Carasco was aleady shown the door, Batista should be next. The Mets should have held on to Jason Isringhausen. He is still a hell of a lot more reliable even at his age than Batista. The Mets will be better down the road. There are some good young arms down on the farm that will be ready in a year or two. Matt Harvey and Zack Wheeler are in the plans as key parts of the future Mets rotation. Both are pitching well in the minors this season. There has been a lot of talk recently about the trade deadline. Most of the decent bullpen help that will be available are guys on second division teams that have bloated contracts their present teams are looking to unload. The rest are guys that are probably not much better than what the Mets already have. The Mets don't need any more Miguel Batistas.

The Mets were swept by the Atlanta Braves down in Atlanta over the weekend. And the road trip doesn't get any easier as they now head to Washington to face the tough division leading Nationals in a series starting tonight. The starting pitching the Mets depended on in the first half has not been there so far in the second. Santana and Dickey have had several rough outings in a row going back before the break. That needs to change or the Mets will fall out of the race quickly. Veteran ace Santana has really not been the same since the no-hitter against St. Louis. Is he tiring as the innings mount? Keep in mind he's coming back from a year off following major pitching shoulder surgery. Santana is a gamer, a proud athlete. If he is having physical problems he won't come out and say it but his pitching perfomances lately have told their own story. Dickey is a knuckleballer who can pitch a ton of innings if need be, but he has not been in command of his signature pitch since the end of the first half. Hitters are not stupid, and the word is probably getting out on different approaches to hitting his knuckleball. Dickey hasn't been able to reach that elusive 13th win in quite a while now. He needs to re-adjust and bounce back. Are the Mets as good as they were in the first half or were they playing over their heads? I think they are a team on the rise still missing some pieces. There is a lot of good young talent already on the ballclub. Mets fans have taken what they've been given this season and given that this team was predicted to be in the basement at this point we can't get overly upset by recent events. Clearly, the Mets have been helped along this season by the dramatic collapse of the perpetual powerhouse Philadelphia Phillies, and by the Braves early season up and down play which has helped allow the inconsistant Mets to stay close in the division race. The Braves are now heating up. The Marlins, who spent a ton of cash on star players last winter have never been a factor. Nobody expected Washington to take command of the division the way they have so far and their consistantly good starting pitching this season has placed them head and shoulders above everyone else in the NL east. The Mets can't seem to get any kind of long winning streak going. Even when the starting pitching was at it's best. The offense gets going for a few games, everyone gets excited, and then it sputters. This is the traditional pattern of a .500 team. The Mets never make it easy on themselves to stay comfortably over the .500 mark. But they have been competative this year and have made it fun once again to watch their ballgames. Their bullpen has been horrible, and to stay as competitive as they have with that gorilla on their back factoring in is amazing in itself. Speaking of a gorilla on the Mets back, Jason Bay is scheduled to come off the disabled list and will probably be penciled in to start tonight in left field. It's ironic that former Met Carlos Beltran is having the kind of season he's now having in St. Louis. A veteran power bat like his is just what the Mets need at this point to help balance the lineup. In reality, it was time for him to go when he did. They were not going to re-sign him. When the Mets traded Beltran away to San Francisco they got prized minor league pitching prospect Zack Wheeler in return. Wheeler has kept on progressing through the minors and is considered one of the best pitching prospects in baseball. Patience..
