@ Jason LeBlanc, you asked what tracks will be heard on Movies on the Radio when Giacchino presents the premier of his score Saturday night. It's an interesting range of moods, and I think it probably provides a good sense of the score. We feature several pieces listed on the CD -- plus a track Michael considers quite important that, I'm surprised to see, is NOT listed on the CD! That piece is "Ode to Harrison," which, you'll hear Michael explain, is his musical portrait of the character played by Benedict Cumberbatch. Themes he created in that piece recur elsewhere in the score.

Included on Movies on the Radio:
Logos/Pranking the Natives
London Calling
The Kronos Wartet
Ode to Harrison
Ship to Ship
Star Trek Main Title Theme

Here's the page for the show, which you can "like" and share on Facebook, etc., and where you can leave comments:
http://www.wqxr.org/programs/movies/2013/may/04/

The show airs May 4th at 9 pm, New York time, on WQXR FM 105.9 and world-wide at wqxr.org

As I mentioned before, Michael's a great guest, and shares lots of insight and anecdotes that will be of interest to folks here.

Maybe 'Ode to Harrison' is an iTunes exclusive track?

David, thank you for that! It's funny, I just predicted on JWFan that the Harrison's Theme concert arrangement would be played on your show when I saw it wasn't on the OST!

Glad to hear I was right - can't wait to hear the show!

That sample for "Sub Prime Directive" is particularly good. There's not a lot of the main theme in the samples, but surely that's just because of what happened to be selected.

This maybe the saving grace of the year as far as new scores go.

Saving grace? IMO, 2013 has delivered some excellent material so far.

Some thoughts about the music:

London Calling - Sounds literally English in style (reminded me of Jane Eyre)

Kronos Quartet - Giacchino does a similar thing as Cliff Eidelman from Star Trek VI (chorus chanting in Klingon)

Meld Memerized has a conspiratorial feel at the beginning of the cue...

Overall I am intrigued!

What are your favorites?

Escape From Tomorrow (Korzeniowski)
Evil Dead (Banos)
Jack The Giant Slayer (Ottman)
A Good Day To Die hard (Beltrami)
Mama (Velasquez)
Iron Man 3 (Tyler)
The Croods (Silvestri)
Riddle (Glasgow)

And even thought the entire score doesn't work for me I want to give a shout out to Hanan Townshend's theme from To The Wonder.

Of those that I tried, I found them uninspiring and forgettable. And I really wanted to love some of them.

Thank you Erik! Escape From Tomorrow is indeed a fantastic score, for some reason I had thought it was a 2012 film! I listened to Iron Man 3 on spotify yesterday and quite enjoyed the final track! The rest was better than I was expecting as well. I need to check out all the others - all of which are on my "to listen to" list already, except Riddle, which I had not heard of before. I'll have to investigate.

My quick thoughts on the samples:

1 Logos/Pranking The Natives 03:01
This track is clearly an edit / album assembly - in between the opening logos and the first action scene, there is a scene with Harrison and then setup for the action scene (at least there was in the IMAX preview)

2 Spock Drops, Kirk Jumps
Awesome action music, love the driving grand piano behind it!

3 Sub Prime Directive
Awesome new rendition of the Cadet's Theme!

4 London Calling
Wow, lovely piano work!

5 Meld-merized
Love the blend of strings with Harrison's theme!

6 The Kronos Wartet
Male choir chanting! Must be Klingon music!

7 Brigadoom
Brief quiet moment amidst all the action

8 Ship To Ship
Great frenetic Giacchino action music featuring Harrison's Theme!

9 Earthbound and Down
Great suspense music leading to another awesome new rendition of the Cadet's theme!

10 Warp Core Values
Seems like a revamped / modified version of the Cadet's theme

11 Buying The Space Farm
Quiet contemplative music

12 The San Fran Hustle
This action music reminds me a LITTLe bit of the "Apes" cue from John Carter

13 Kirk Enterprises
A reworked That New Car Smell

14 Star Trek Main Theme
Like the 09 end credits

Overall, it was refreshing how NEW it all sounded - only in the final 2 tracks (at least in the samples) does he repeat anything from ST09 closely - and other than the few Cadet Theme variations in the earlier samples, it was all COMPLETELY new stuff. The action music is very fresh - you still know it's Giacchino, but it doesn't sound derivative of his prior action music (except for *maybe* The San Fran Hustle a little bit)

Can't wait for Saturday night!

I will wait for the deluxe edition as I did with the previous Trek score. And it better be in a standard 2 CD case.

There is no Harrison's Theme in any of these samples, I don't believe.

The Meld-merized sample has part of Harrison's theme in the strings, then (I think) another part on the harp. Also, in Ship to Ship there's a really nice combination of Harrison's Theme and the main theme.
