I have been playing this Intrada presentation of the various facets of Goldsmith's brilliant score to "Alien". With all the material presented it is like two complete scores! The best sounding music is the one from the OST. Goldsmith's score in all its glory is absolutely superb. Next on to North's "Cheyenne Autumn"

I finally bought it an am glad I did so. Not a fan of the full out horror thriller scores, too noisy and hectic for me, but the atmospheric material is very enjoyable.

And for all those record companies complaining about Youtube, I bought this CD because the Alien-soundtrack on Youtube convinced me I had to have this release.

It is indeed a wonderful work!
Oddly enough (for me, anyway), the old LP version still haunts me, mostly I guess, because it was all I had for listening for about 30 years. Plus the LP is a nice arrangement even if not true to the film.
The film score for Alien is one in particular in which I want to hear what the composer preferred for the film.

The film score on the Intrada release has a high degree of musical continuity on a per-track basis, despite JGs attempts to create short energetic bursts of music as and when required. I think that this was what Ridley Scott found detracted from his vision of the film. He only wanted bits and pieces with very little continuity to give it cinematic currency without dominating the proceedings. So its arguable whether JG was required for the score at all. Take the main title - the original track is symphonically full-bodied with the kind of mind-set applied that was not required by Scott. The rewrite used for the film is more a series of weird and spooky noises that weaves the atmosphere the directer wanted. Since I obtained the LP before seeing the film, I couldn't figure out where the main title music went. There was no Film Score Monthly board back then to clarify what had happened.

Ironically, I think the longest excerpt of music used in the film was from Freud - in the scene where Dallas enters the shaft system to flush out the critter.

It's definitely an interesting debate...I could argue for both sides in many of the cases.

While I don't blame Goldsmith at all for the butchering of his music (I'd be pissed too...and he's my idol), I would have to side with Scott & Co. on the more subtle main title. And I don't even mind the use of the Hanson symphony at the end (it's like using a pop song at the end of a Dante film, despite an awesome score...*cough*Innerspace*cough*). Plus, I would've never been introduced to that beautiful music otherwise.

Having said that, I think the use of the Freud music was a mistake. It always felt oddly out of place to me.

I have to say that as a kid—well before I became a film score fan—when I first saw Alien the music that made the greatest impression on me was the Freud cue used during the shaft scene. It was so perfect the way those creepy, plaintive, whining notes emphasized the aloneness of Dallas in there and the lurking unknown. That music really stuck with me. Never had any idea as a kid that that music hadn't originally been written for the scene. So on a visceral, gut-level I do have to side with Ridley on that choice.

Oh, man -- "Freud". I haven't listened to that in like a year and-a-half. Great I saw you mention it, some good Halloween music there. I need to fish it out and listen to it again.

I got ALIEN in the mail today, and when I tried to get it out of the jewel case it cracked right in half. It was in there so tight, and I didn't even bend it that far. I'm very upset about it.

henry, I'm sorry that happened. frown I hate when they put discs in so tight like that. I've noticed that with a lot of DVDs/Blu-Rays too. One thing you can try in the future is "turning" the disc slowly, while very gently lifting on one edge -- almost like you're taking off a jar lid or something. I do that and have never had a problem since. Just make sure you're also gently pressing down on the center spindle(s) for leverage.

In the meantime, you might contact the company that sold you "Alien". They might replace it for you(?), since the disc was in there so ridiculously tight. Good luck, my friend....

Hi buddy! I did press down on the spindle, it just wouldn't come out. Thanks for the tip though, I'll do that from now on.smile

Sure thing henry. You might want to see if any other FSMers offer any advice first though; I wouldn't want to give you "bad" advice or advice that would hurt any of your discs. I've never had a problem doing it, but maybe I've just been lucky. I usually only have to do it once, then I just make sure not to push it on super-tightly so it won't be jammed on the spindles again. smile

Anyway, do you think you can get your disc replaced? I hope so...

Can anyone report on which track(s) from Freud make up the shaft scene? Trying to locate it myself and only part of a cue seems to fit.

I believe it's all (or mostly) "Desperate Case"

Well I didn't bother returning it since it was really my fault. But I did order another copy for a good price. I'll try your trick getting the new one out of the case.smile

Of which an alternate version can be heard on the Varese Sarabande Deluxe Edition C.D., and is NOT the version heard in the final film.

Really? Interesting... man I want that version used in the film. So perfect for that scene. Thanks for the info.

"Main Title" and "Charcot's Show" and then "Desperate Case." First part of "Main Title" is used for the acid scene and "The First Step" is heard later in the film when Ripley looks after Jones on the bridge.

How does Desperate Case on the Varese CD line up to this? (It's clearly different to the version on the Tsunami CD)
