Agreed. It could have been much stronger musically. Though I really LOVE the song at the end of the album and a few of the themes a lot of the score is pretty sparse or typical action music. Not much about the score screams seafaring music.

This is exactly the case. It's the only reason HZ didn't score it.

So good things CAN happen for the wrong reasons. wink

I sure wasn't expecting to hear quality emotional music for this concept, but man were I in for a surprise. "Young Nickerson", "Homecoming", "The Story Is Told" and "The White Whale Chant" are absolutely gorgeous. "The White Whale Chant" is easily my most favorite score cue of the year. Here's hoping that the composer gets the opportunity to write more tunes like these.

Curious who sings some parts on the score. Unless I missed it, there was no mention of her anywhere in the credits.

EDIT: According to the following interview with the composer, the vocalist is Lotte Rhodes.

There is also no mention of the singer in the actual liner notes (though they are not very long). I too would love to know her name because she is fantastic in this track. I love especially when she hits those high notes.

I just received this CD from a seller on Amazon Marketplace. It was shrinkwrapped...but the CD and artwork don't look quite right. The booklet/back insert look like they are high quality colour copies and aren't "properly assembled" (i.e., the booklet is ever so slightly too large for the jewel case), while the CD has a "sheen" to it that I usually associate with professional CDrs (the kind that Amazon offers for certain scores). The entire thing also smells slightly of chemicals, again something I recognize from other professional CDrs.

Can anybody confirm that the OST from Watertower actually comes like that? Because if it doesn't, and it should be a proper silver/pressed CD, I'll have to return this one.

Ta mucho, CK

As far as I know on CD it exists only as a professional CD-R. Watertower issues less and less regular CDs but they still practice the on-demand CD-R making - through Amazon.

The disc and the booklet seem fine to me but it's true, the latter is a bit large for the jewel case, I can hardly take it out and put it back afterwards. However I don't feel the chemical smell on my copy.

Theres always iTunes with the digital booklet. Water Tower seems to consistently go digital route.
Got 13 reviews with an overall five stars.

Good thing I didn't take Shaun Rutherford's bet!
Only seeing this now and the score is very disappointing.
It's all Zimmer and no Roque. Quite a fall for a promising talent.

just yesterday I was listening to some of his early Spanish scores on the complilation Recopilatorio (book with 2 cd's) ..such gorgeous and richly inspired music..just to mention one, the theme from Segunda Piel ( Second Skin) is one of my favorite "dramatic" love themes ever.
All I can say is..please Roque, get the hell out of Hollywood, I know they pay good money, but they're ruining you.

Look what he had to work with, though. This was a bad movie. It was edited in a blender. There was hardly one shot over five or six seconds long, most only three or four seconds. It was one of the most annoying movies I've seen recently and proved once again what a hack Ron Howard can be.

This is sad to hear as the book is so great. It ciuld have made a brilliant film. Just from the trailers I thought the look of the film was probably the wrong approach.

I don't think the movie was so bad. It is not a masterpiece, granted, but it is not that bad people make it seem to be.

As for the score, it probably helps that I haven't been familiar with Banos' music before so I can't compare it to anything he had done before but In The Heart of the Sea is one of my absolute favourite scores from last year. Melodic, emotional, exciting. I enjoy it tremendously.

Unfortunately, it does help. A lot.

The film is a bit of a mess, that's true. And it is a shame, because Ron Howard can make great films and could have been the ideal choice. But somehow, the different aspects don't gel into a satisfying whole. Still, there are a few genuinely exciting things about the film, and the odd pacing seems to bother most those who are not familiar with the story (although that's a lame excuse). I really, really wanted to like this film, but all I could muster was a "it wasn't that bad". I love seafaring, adventurous music, so I had hoped that if nothing else, this film would deliver in this respect. But unfortunately, nothing from the score stuck enough for me to crave for it. And learning that it is only distributed as a CD-R was the nail in the coffin.

Ron Howard is the kind of director that's only as good as his script. He's not a writer himself, so he needs good writers. He didn't get them with this movie. The movie is just not compelling. It lacks suspense. It's more about some poor sailors starving on a rock, rather than a battle with a huge whale. It bombed at the boxoffice, Now it will fade into deserved obscurity. I warn anyone who still wants to watch it -- it's a nightmare of rapid cutting.

I believe an apt term here is "voiceless".

I think the detractors on this movie are full of it.

Go watch that YouTube faux-cable-news commercial for Captain America: Civil War and leave us real movie fans alone.

I'm full of the truth about this movie, and I wouldn't be caught dead in a theater watching "Captain America; Civil War." Even the commercials stink.
