Yes! Love Story... Almost forgot to mention the artwork. Never seen this before but I like it.

Full credit is due to Quartet's art director, Nacho B. Govantes, for this. He does consistently superb work and I thought he came up with a wonderful design that symbolises the film, differentiates it from the original album, and simultaneously modernises yet evokes a period feel.

Chris

Yes but it was definitely inspired by the soundtrack art for THE GREAT GATSBY (1974).

Use some lotion. Rub it on its skin.

Or it gets the hose again.

You're gonna need a bigger box.

Does anyone know who conducted LOVE STORY and where it was recorded?

Does anyone know who conducted LOVE STORY and where it was recorded?

I had always assumed it was Christian Gaubert who arranged and conducted Lai's scores at this time.

According to the booklet, it was conducted by Henri Leonard. It doesn't say where it was recorded. The only other credit is for pianist Georges Pludermacher.

I was surprised they didn't mention Danielle Licari's vocals on "Snow Frolic" in either the notes or the credits.

And while we're discussing LOVE STORY, let me just say that hearing the music as heard in the film makes me appreciate the original album recording much, much more. The film version is full of edits and the tracks are much truncated in comparison.

The reason I asked is because there was a LOVE STORY LP on the Musidisc label that was released in France and Spain, conducted by Henri Leonard. There is some question as to whether it is the same performance as the original Paramount album, as the listed timings for many of the tracks are off anywhere from 10 to 30 seconds ("Snow Frolic").

My guess is Anvil Studios in Denham, England, but there's no paperwork to confirm this.

After much struggling to extract the small box, leaving two notes for the mailman that were ignored, having additional, unreachable mail placed behind the box, and, after dialing three phone numbers before getting a live postal worker to get in touch with the carrier to tell him not to wedge in my package to the point where I can't pull it out, it was finally placed in the larger delivery box. Who knew it would be so difficult. But I know have the 4 scores in hand!

Bob,

Doing some research, you're right. That is a re-recording by Henri Leonard. DiscCogs confirms this.

Here's Leonard's version of "I Love You Phil" which is totally different that the Lai version:

I think his conductor credit on the Quartet release is a mistake and I'm going to go with my original belief that Christian Gaubert was the conductor of the score.

Well, not to cast aspersions on those who contribute to Discogs (of which I am one), but it's the Discogs assertion that I was trying to check out. The person who added that comment about the Leonard recording not being the original soundtrack (more than 3 years after the record was entered into Discogs) was apparently not sure enough about it to actually remove that recording from the master list of all of the other releases of the Paramount soundtrack album (of which there are about 80).

I removed two records from that list, by the Hollywood Sound Stage Orchestra, that I KNOW are not the Paramount recording.

While it's clear from the comparison track you provided that the Musidisc recording is not the Paramount version, might it still not be possible that Leonard conducted the Paramount version as well as his own cover version? Composers (Mancini, Rozsa, Bernstein) have made cover versions of their own scores, why not conductors of scores they have conducted?

Yes, it's not the fifty minutes the announcement says - it was originally fifty-seven and it was always a terrific CD. But I bought this new one anyway, just because I love the score.

The MCA had great content but the sound was dreaful. The Quartet sounds night and day better.

I hear this from so many fans now-days, another dreadful score/sound, were/are labels doing there jobs proper then, the sound quality is fine to me, still its a nice release but like the Russia House I'm content with original.
