It's always been my understanding that '2001' made it's way (almost immediately - at least in terms of tone and approach) to the MGM TV documentary 'Africa'. The similarity is so great, in fact, that when Jerry Goldsmith and crew did their reconstruction and re-recording of North's '2001' they mistakenly included the 'Main Theme' from 'Africa' in the project. Can anyone offer any up-to-date accuracy on all of this? The unused 2001 score seems to have been judiciously spread here and there. I am not familiar with Africa. Does anyone have a map of which parts of 2001, acting as recognisable source, appeared in other projects? "Africa" preceded "2001" in composition, and "Shoes of the Fisherman" immediately followed, almost as if allowing North to score another epic was MGM's way of compensation for the "2001" fiasco. The monumental crashing chords depicting the centuries-old splendor of the Vatican in the middle of the "Shoes" Overture (and in the album version of "The Election" cue and elsewhere) were lifted from the "Bones" cue (aka "Main Title" on the Goldsmith recording) from 2001, while the lunar cue "Moon Rocket Bus" was reused in "Shoes" as "Solitary Pilgrimage." I've read that the main theme from AFRICA was untitled on the manuscript and that it was stored inside the boxes containing the manuscripts for 2001. Varese & Goldsmith recorded that theme thinking it was part of 2001. I had owned the MGM LP of AFRICA before Varese's 1993 re-recording of 2001, and wondered why it was on that album when I first heard it. I suppose that means Goldsmith & Robert Townson were unaware of what AFRICA sounds like? Amazing! [AFRICA was recorded in Bavaria during April of 1967. The AFRICA TV program was broadcast in Sept '67. Amazing! It's possible. It's also likely that they weren't sure this wasn't a case of composition from one project being revisited for another. They may have felt it was better to record it and only later discovered it was a filing error on North's part. Anyway, it's a good performance and easy to relabel in iTunes.    Posted:   Dec 23, 2013 - 5:32 AM     By:   Josh "Swashbuckler" Gizelt   (Member) The confusion is not so surprising given that the score that they were recording — 2001 — had strong commonalities with other major North works, including Shoes of the Fisherman, Dragonslayer and one of his symphonies. It could easily have registered with everyone involved as just a composition that happened to sound like Africa.    Posted:   Dec 23, 2013 - 12:44 PM     By:   Grecchus   (Member) The jazzy number from the Goldsmith/Varese CD was described in the liner notes , if I remember correctly, as being either the intermission or even possibly exit music. It did seem a little bit odd to me that North had composed something from his 'Streetcar' jazz novelty days and transplanted it into a film for which no precedent had really ever been made up to that point in time. But then again, the story of 2001 begins in Africa and North might have had his own textual ideas for that piece of music. He brought along a manuscript from AFRICA as reference material. To make this 2001 composing project on schedule. He must have either read the script or watched a rough cut of the Africa/primate sequence and figured his AFRICA ideas would translate well to 2001. Also, Since Kubrick hastily ushered him (North) away from the project after 2 weeks or so (and 30 minutes of underscoring ideas), any manuscripts and mono safety tapes just got boxed, dumped & forgotten...
