I couldn't pick a number one favorite composer, much less a number two. The wealth and talent is innumerable.

These sorts of threads are kind of pointless, but anyway...

1. Rozsa.
2. Goldsmith.
3. Bernstein.

I would have put North at 3, but he's a little too patchy for me. Spartacus yes, Agony and Ecstasy, yes, Dragonslayer no, no and no. For me he's a bit like that little girl who was both very good and horrid.

For the rest, it comes down to individual scores. Moross is fabulous, but didn't do that much, and there's a kind of sameness to his western scores. Duning could turn out a fine score, but his career seems short-lived compared to the others. Tiomkin is always listenable and usually exciting, but compared to the formalism of Rozsa his scores (Roman Empire, say) are a bit of a patchwork quilt, with occasionally inappropriate styles scattered over the score like confetti. Williams is high quality but somehow just doesn't grab me beyond an initial listen, and I've never been into Herrmann despite an admiration for his contribution to the medium. Running out of names...

Barry. Close second behind Goldsmith.
Used to be other way around but as I've gotten older I've found Barry's non bond scores evoke a world weary sadness. Goldsmith feels more energizing. But I did say Barry is a close second to Goldsmith.

This week it is Elmer Bernstein with Ennio Morricone at number one and Jerry Goldsmith third. That is because I've been playing a ton of Ennio in anticipation of his concert, as I did Elmer in anticipation of his fantastic tribute concert. I dive into these guys and they provide worlds within worlds of music for me.

I really cannot describe too many composers that way.

Barry. Close second behind Goldsmith.
Barry used to be my first but as I got older his non-Bond music got too sad for me. Goldsmith became my go to composer to get energized and renewed. But Barry is still a close second. In short could be me changing.
