These sorts of threads are kind of pointless, but anyway... 1. Rozsa. 2. Goldsmith. 3. Bernstein. I would have put North at 3, but he's a little too patchy for me. Spartacus yes, Agony and Ecstasy, yes, Dragonslayer no, no and no. For me he's a bit like that little girl who was both very good and horrid. For the rest, it comes down to individual scores. Moross is fabulous, but didn't do that much, and there's a kind of sameness to his western scores. Duning could turn out a fine score, but his career seems short-lived compared to the others. Tiomkin is always listenable and usually exciting, but compared to the formalism of Rozsa his scores (Roman Empire, say) are a bit of a patchwork quilt, with occasionally inappropriate styles scattered over the score like confetti. Williams is high quality but somehow just doesn't grab me beyond an initial listen, and I've never been into Herrmann despite an admiration for his contribution to the medium. Running out of names...
