Okay, so I've placed tons and tons of orders from Amazon for nearly 15 years now. Today I decided to purchase The Big Bang Theory: Season 7 DVD from them and wait -- apparently, "this item is exclusively reserved for Amazon Prime members."

WHAT?

That's right, you can only buy this product (and many other items now as well) if you belong to Amazon Prime. I have nothing against Amazon Prime, and it may be the right way to go, but to say "We will sell this product to these people but yeah, not these people" is a horrendous, shocking move on Amazon's part.

And yes, I can buy it from secondary sellers on Amazon, probably for a cheaper price. And yes, I can join Amazon Prime (for a fee of course, one-month free membership notwithstanding).

This is not the point! I have been a loyal customer at Amazon for nearly 15 years, ordering tons of items, often opting to purchase from Amazon even when secondary sellers offer the same product at cheaper prices. And how is my loyalty rewarded? By being turned away at the door by the Amazon bouncer because I'm not on their Amazon Prime list. Quite frankly, that is bullshit.

I spoke to a rep today to complain and learn more about it; she confirmed that it is a new change and that many other products will feature the same exclusivity. I submitted an official complaint. I honestly have better things to do with my time than to call a company and complain about a policy I disagree with, but considering how much and for how long I've used Amazon and my strong degree of frustration at their new policy, I had to say something. I know it won't matter; I know nothing will change.

Anyone else aware of this new policy?

Maybe a glitch?

I know a few weeks ago I tried to order from Amazon.ca and was told I couldn't because "my delivery address surpassed the 35 character per line limit" or something, even though it didn't. A few days later I tried again and it worked.

If true this is nothing short of extortion.

Unfortunately it's true.

Sounds like Amazon is going to be getting less of my business.

Is this a temporary exclusivity or is it permanent for certain items? I haven't noticed exclusive offers on any of the european amazons so far but would hate to miss out on titles because of such a rule. Makes you wonder if they still want people to actually buy their products. And even if it was on sale at third party sellers, that means it doesn't qualify for free shipping which sucks either way. Frickin' amazonian masterhood! wink

Maybe a glitch?

Not a glitch bro, I'm telling you -- it's new policy.

I received this follow-up email from Amazon customer service (which admittedly, begrudgingly admittedly, is always stellar even if their policy is f***ed up) after I issued a phone complaint:

(Francis, their vague statement of policy only partially answers your question)

---

"I'm so sorry you had to contact us today to learn more about Prime exclusive items.

From time to time, we make certain items available exclusively to prime members. It's an additional benefit of membership. The vast majority of items on Amazon.com can be purchased without having a Prime membership and we continue to expanding the selection and features available to all customers. If you have not previously done so, you can sign up for a 30-day Prime free trial here:

http://www.amazon.com/prime

However, this item may be offered by third-party sellers which can be purchased by all customers.

I was happy to forward your complaint and concerns to the correct department regarding being an extremely loyal customer and not being able to purchase The Big Bang Theory: Season 7 (2014) due to it being exclusive to Prime members only. It is with feedback such as yours that allows Amazon to continue to provide the best possible shopping experience to all customers."

---

Right, product exclusivity is an additional benefit of membership. At the unimportant expense of all the other loyal Amazon customers who choose not to pay extra money to join Amazon prime. Yes, they stress the availability of exclusive product from secondary sellers, but that is far and wide beyond the point of the issue: the bottom line is Amazon is trying to make more money at the expense of their loyal customers who aren't Prime Members. Kind of like Solium said, extortion -- not completely, since they stress secondary sellers, but essentially Amazon says with this policy: you can only have access to purchase an exceedingly popular item like Big Bang Theory Ssn 7, but only if you join our membership. Otherwise, sorry outsider, go knock on someone else's door.

W...T...F?!?!

"It's an additional benefit of membership."

And a way to shit on everyone else. I'm tired of businesses thinking of new ways to profit, but spinning it so it's "in the name of customer service." It's nothing but greed run amok.

At my job, it's a requirement to sign people up for the store credit card. If they say no, you come at them another way. If you get another no, you give it a different try. You're supposed to hear the word "no" four times before you give up. Why? Because using the card saves the business money and cardholders spend more. But it's for the customers!

I'm tired of this being the new normal. Attrition isn't customer service.

It seems like Amazon thinks they've found the perfect way to strong arm customers into signing up for Prime. Because giving them money for goods isn't enough. Before long, you'll have to pay just to use the site. Two birds, one stone, and greed for all.

I had no idea Amazon had started doing this. It is a pathetic move. It tells me their business has gotten too big if they can forget what made them. I have 2 admit I am sick and tired of spin EVERYWHERE & IN EVERYTHING. The U.S. is run by lawyers so as much as I don't like it, I know it isn't going 2 change ! Sounds like a politition but they are OVERWHELMING ??? You got it, LAWYERS. Create a narrative, SPIN IT to paint their picture to sell to the pigs being led to slaughter.

It's devaluing people for not being the type of customer the business wants.
It's exclusionary and punitive and, ultimately, counter-productive.

Many years from now, long after society's infatuation with all-things-online and we have actual stores once again, people will ask, "How did it happen? When did the seemingly undefeatable empire of online shopping first start to crumble?".
The answer will probably be with policies like this one. big grin

It's also become more and more a privilege society for the fewer. If you can buy a membership you have access to all of the goods. (Another example: the GA fan-club and soundtracks) Thing is that used to be reserved for expensive upper class luxuries otherwise unattainable, not what should be available to the common person.

I had no idea Amazon has started this practice. I just recently renewed my Prime membership, so I imagine other titles will be on their list soon. If it's worth anything, Best Buy have Season 7 available, at a similar price.

It was bad enough when Amazon started charging tax and upped their free shipping limit to a stinging $35, but this is just awful. mad

Same here , I had EXODUS in my cart and it gave me the same message that I have to have that goddamned PRIME membership. What gives?

Prime is well worth it for me, 2 day free shipping, free prime video, they drop the $35 minimum charge for free shipping. I can see how the exclusives might bother people, but Prime Amazon remains a pretty good deal.

It's not about whether or not Prime is worth it. It's about the fact that they're limiting their selection to non-Prime members. It's gratuitous and insulting. Worse than that, it's an affront to the business model that *they* established.

Wow that is really stupid that they would go that route. Thankfully I haven't bought much from Amazon lately but as soon as I encounter this as a limitation I will buy things elsewhere. I'm trying to buy less and less physical products though so maybe I won't have an issue.

Beginning last year, I noticed Amazon was delaying the shipping of stuff I ordered that would be sent via free shipping (non-Prime) by about a week.
I asked it about on Blu-ray.com and was told Amazon delays free shipping in order to persuade customers to switch to Prime......$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
