Poor Michael Giacchino, he composed the soundtracks for the three worst films of the year (in my opinion): Jupiter Ascending, Tomorrowland and Jurassic World. I am not judging the soundtracks, but the films. He is a talented composer, but their choices for films ...
I enjoyed Jurassic World and found some charm in the weird Jupiter Ascending. If you think they were among the worst movies of the year, I'd suggest you dip further into the yearly January-March dump of stinker action and horror movies
Jurassic World? You mean the movie with the highest-grossing global opening ever of 524 million? Yeah, what was he thinking?
He said in his opinion and I'm sure he's talking about the quality of the film not its box office return. Phantom Menace did great business too, but it's still a stinker.
All three films afforded amazing opportunities for scoring -- vast tapestries calling for an array of sounds and orchestration and grand emotions. And I rather liked all three films -- just my opinion of course!
He scored 2 films that did not do well at all and 2 films that are extremely well-review and/or are earning a bunch of money. As I've heard before; it ain't the reviews, it's if you can get butts in the seats. Scoring the film with the biggest box office weekend (so far) can only be good for his career.
For my money, Giacchino wrote one of the best scores of the 21st century for a film that was excoriated by critics but, in my estimation, wrongheadedly.
"John Carter" is a terrific film. The score is dazzling!
Am I alone in like the Phantom Menace? I've gained more and more insight into what Lucas was 'trying' to do the more times I watch the Prequels.
Guess I'm an idiot.
Poor Giacchino indeed?
Jupiter Ascending was a glorious mess and had my least favorite score from Giacchino this year, but I guess I need to listen to the score again because I'll never actively watch the movie again (someone pointed out the story would have lend itself better to TV and I agree with all the familial talk). Tomorrowland had weird story turns and a week ending that left me cold to what the message was... Who knew optimism could seem so much of a bummer. Jurassic World was Big Dumb Fun... especially the last quarter and I thought Giacchino did OK, but Inside Out I can't stop listening to and the movie is smarter than most of the audience... including me.... Loved it, and really want to see it again, I've only had that impetus this year with Mad Max!... but again you can through all that out because I like The Phantom Menace (talk about optimism) .
