I'm sure this has been discussed before, but I'm about to start watching my way through the BDs of this show and while I'm inclined to watch the original versions, I wanted to see if people have any advice as to whether I should watch the versions with the new effects instead.

Thanks!

I am probably alone on this, but I actually prefer the old effects.

Originally they were only going to redo the effects exactly as they were originally shot . Which to me seemed kind of pointless. Lets face it, there were only a few special effects shots in TOS and most were reused over and over again like BSG TOS. Instead the digital department got more creative with the new footage.

While the new effects are not perfect it's cool to see what they could have done (in the 60's) if they had a bigger budget. The upside is you see many new shots of the Enterprise from different camera angles.

Oddly the "big effects" episodes are not the best. I was really disappointed with the new effects for the Doomsday Machine. But there are other episodes where the new effects are pretty cool.

The new versions are quite good and to be honest I find rather interesting because of the little things, the Gorn Blinking in AREA, a Window in Capt. Pike's Hospital room showing the city....

They are well worth your time and you have the original versions as well.

Not a bad deal IMHO.

you dont need any advice since you can switch back and forth while you watch - an onscreen icon pops up and you can toggle with your remote. That in itself is annoying since the pop-up cant be shut off (at least not on my player).

The composition of the new effects is interesting, but their execution looks like a modern video game and is both unconvincing and doesnt flow with the original film. But the original effects look worse in HD, so you end up toggling thru the entire episode, trying to find the least worst representations. I wish there was a third option where they corrected/improved the old effects.

I only ever watch the old versions. Altering the effects was silly to me for two reasons:

1. It's a product of the 60s. Adding new visual effects shots is a glaring omission of all the other things that could have been digitally upgraded, like cheap costumes and sets. No one would think of doing that though, so it's odd that doing it with the effects is okay.

2. It sticks out like a sore thumb and instantly takes me out of it.

Me too, but my wife likes the new effects, so it seems like a 50/50 proposition.

Unfortunately I can't because I'm on a mac with barely any functional blu-ray player, so I have to rip video files to my disc before I can watch them. frown

But thanks for the thoughtful reply!

I'm probably going to go with the originals, but the counter, I think, at least to #2, is that 60s TV wasn't being shown at 1080p resolution and so matte lines and such that would have been not so noticeable on a 60s TV stick out like a sore thumb in HD.

If nothing else watch the CGI versions for the novelty of it. It came with the package. Watch it once and you never have to watch them again.

I was initially dead against the new effects work for the Blu-Rays....however I was pleasantly surprised about how well it was all done, and have to say that those are my go-to versions now.

I don't mind some of the new effects, but they really stand out as "new" and not of the time. I actually would have been happy if they redid them identically, because some of the Enterprise angles are beyond what they could have shot then. I'm also not a fan of the really tight close ups of some shots of the ship, closer than ever seen in the original.

The only episode where I prefer the new effects is "Tomorrow is Yesterday." The Enterprise in the atmosphere shots are fantastic, there's a new shot of the fighter jet "under cloud cover" which takes the place of a night time shot and looks 100% photo realistic. And, finally, the climactic slingshot sequence AT LAST makes sense.

Other than that, the original effects for me, totally.

FYI: I can switch off the icon for the new scenes on my player. That drove me nuts.

It probably is the sort of thing to watch through once, just for the novelty.

Many liberties were taken with the scope of the effects and re-editing some sequences they were dropped into. Depends on how much of a purist you are.

People got a great deal out of Star Trek despite it's many story-telling limitations. The new FX are probably unnecessary, but they are novel and interesting.

OK, liked what exactly?

Can you give a couple of SPECIFIC EXAMPLES of this that we all can look at?

Like with Star Wars, I'm in both camps. I like some of the changes, and dislike others. I'd love to have branching so I could choose the ones I wanted, but that will _never_ happens with SW or ST:TOS.

Overall I think they did a pretty good job with TNG blu rays, the remastering is excellent, the new effects are mostly pretty good. The original motion control model work on the ship was really excellent. Occasionally I want the old planets back.

The new CGI didn't hide bad makeup so your argument is invalid. wink

For me its two different situations. Star Wars was a two hour movie and every effect is a custom effects shot for it's particular scene. (Well 99% anyway) Star Trek TOS was 90hrs of content that used the same 10 or so shots over and over again. That's why I prefer the diversity afforded the updated effects in Trek, but prefer the original cuts of Star Wars.
