Monster House wasn't really for me, but Trick R Treat was great genre scoring (IMO). Weird that Pipes kind of dropped off the map since then.

My review of KRAMPUS, for anyone who's interested:

Jon

Excellent review, Jon!

For me, Krampus is a contender for 2015's Top 5 scores. Star Wars: The Force Awakens will probably top my list, and I expect Morricone's The Hateful Eight to be up there as well. Other personal favourites this year, include Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation (Joe Kraemer), Chappie (Hans Zimmer) and Extinction (Sergio Moure De Oteyza).

Looking forward to listening to this. Gotta say we're kinda being spoiled of late by the quality of scores coming out of the US. CREED and CRIMSON PEAK have hardly left rotation over here.

Can't recall the last time "new" scores from mainstream films had much staying power for this listener, released in such a short window of time!

The movie was so good! Easily the most fun I've had at the theater in a long long time. Looking forward to the album big grin

Love this rendition!

Honestly, what is so special about this? One can easily change lyrics to a song, such as:

Well for one thing, I only want to listen to one of those 2 versions. And secondly, it worked well in the context of the movie.

Yeah, I don't think "ding, fires are done" would scare anybody if they used that rendition in the movie. wink

Is it Thursday yet? It's tormenting that it's out on digital and LP, but we have to wait for the CD. xS

The LP is coming out next month! And the CD is out tomorrow (Tuesday), not Thursday.

Really impressed with the score excerpts on amazon (will be purchasing this one). One thing that caught my attention was the sound of the orchestra, which sounded neither like a Los Angeles-based nor London-based ensemble. There's a piece by Peter Sculthorpe called "Sun Music 2," which was recorded by a symphony orchestra either in Australia or New Zealand, the orchestra on Pipes' score sounding quite similar.

Anyone know where Krampus was recorded? Was it Sydney? Wellington?

Oh! Pardon me. I apparently misread. :S
If this ends up being the final film I experience in theatres in 2015, I'll be quite happy with that. To think, I decided to see this twice instead of a screening of Silent Night Deadly Night (which I also enjoy, for the record, but it's nowhere near this in my book. Part 2, on the other hand...razz).

Yes. Saw this last night and it was recorded in Wellington (New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, I think?).
Film was okay. VERY Dante/Gremlins-like.
Score featured some good horror/action licks amongst the traditional seasonal sound.

Check out "Creatures Are Stirring" around 2:00. It definitely bears a passing resemblance to the Goldsmith sound big grin

A couple of weeks ago, Kaya Savas, Craig Lysy and I visited composer Douglas Pipes at his studio to present him with the 2015 IFMCA Award for Best Original Comedy Score for KRAMPUS!

This is the article about his win on the IFMCA website: http://filmmusiccritics.org/2016/03/douglas-pipes-receives-ifmca-award-for-krampus/

And this is the interview we did with him about the score, on the IFMCA YouTube Channel: https://youtu.be/R1bcH8Mhtu4
