INTRADA Announces:

HOMEWARD BOUND II: LOST IN SAN FRANCISCO
Composed and Conducted by BRUCE BROUGHTON
INTRADA Special Collection Vol. 354

Bruce Broughton
Label: Intrada Special Collection Volume ISC 354
Date: 1996
Time: 78:55
Tracks: 28

For the 1996 Disney sequel, Homeward Bound II: Lost in San Francisco, the urban setting brought fresh challenges for composer Bruce Broughton, whose score for the previous film had been tailored to its grand vistas and bucolic charms. The composer reflected:

“I had themes set up from the first picture, but they didn’t always fit so snugly for the second. Primarily it was the scope of the film that influenced the way the music went. The first film took place mostly outdoors and the music, like the scenery, was bigger in scope, and more dramatic. It also had at times a bit of a country feeling. For the sequel, the locations were more congested with urban neighborhoods, streets, alleys, cars, vans and people everywhere. There was also a romance, so the music had a slightly different feeling, even when the original themes were used. The original film focused more on the personalities of the three animals, whereas the sequel focused a lot on the situations they found themselves in.”

The Walt Disney label issued a CD containing 35 minutes of selections at the time of the film’s release in 1996. That album represented roughly half of the finished score. While it was a rewarding blend of important highlights, the album necessarily omitted many important cues, all of which have been restored in this expanded Intrada release. A highlight of this restoration is the exciting action sequence at the airport when the familiar pet trio breaks loose from their travel cages and makes their desperate escape across the flight deck, a terrific group of three connected cues, none of which were previously available. Courtesy the Walt Disney Company, this Intrada CD is presented from all-new digital mixes created from the original 2? 24-track recording session masters made by Armin Steiner at Paramount Pictures Scoring Stage M in February 1996.

In Homeward Bound II: Lost in San Francisco the Seavers—father Bob (Robert Hays), mother Laura (Kim Greist) and children—have moved to a suburban home in the Bay Area. Determined not to repeat the mistakes of the past (as documented in the first film), they decide to take their pets with them on a family trip to Canada. But Chance fears that they are being returned to “the bad place” (the pound) and busts out with Sassy and Shadow just in time to watch the Seavers’ plane take off. Escaping into San Francisco, the three pets must navigate hostile and unfamiliar terrain—and cross the Golden Gate Bridge—if they are to return safely home. Fortunately, they befriend a gang of streetwise strays, including alpha dog Riley (Sinbad) and the independent-minded Delilah (Carla Gugino), who serve as guides to the pleasures and perils of life in the city.

From the original album, I always loved the track The Fire. I'm guessing it's Heroic Deeds/Post Bonk in this new edition?

"The Fire" is indeed "Heroic Deeds," Kev. "Post Bonk" is new. smile

Thanks Wedge (good shooting Wedge).

I don't know why, but I have always favoured the Homeward Bound sequel score over the first one.
This will be part of a future Intrada order, I have no doubt.

You aren't alone! I, too, tend to prefer the second score. And I'm not just sayin' that cuz I wrote the liner notes! smile The new themes are fantastic!

(BTW, Kev, are you able to drop me a line via email at johntakis (at) gmail (dot) com? Mentioned it in another thread, but not sure if you saw it...)

Looking forward to experiencing this score for the first time, a lot of these scores are fun without sounding like they are for children like today's kids films.

I was actually considering buying the first one before this came about, by some fateful coicidence (I've been on a Broughton kick lately).
Which of the two do ya'll think I should have, if I can only select one?

I'd obviously recommend both! But if you can only choose one, check out the sound clips on the website. The major theme unique to the first score is the family theme, which you can hear at 0:45 seconds into the clip for "My Name Is Chance" and at around 0:28 into "Homeward Bound (Revised)." Unique to the second score is the love theme, which can be heard 0:17 into "Hopes and Regrets" and right at the outset of "Delilah Returns." So if either of these themes grabs you over the other, that's probably the album you should get. (I'm also partial to the villain theme from HBII, for example 1:37 into the track 19 clip.) But they are both vintage Broughton, and neither disappoints.

Although I don't have a copy of the expanded edition for II yet, based on the original Disney Records release, I would choose the sequel score over the first one.
The first score is a solid effort, to be sure, but contains quite a bit of 'mickey-mouse' music, amongst the more dramatic and action-packed sequences.
Unless the expanded II edition contains lots of mickey-mouse stuff that Broughton left off the original release(?), I've always felt it the more dramatic and direct of the two.
I look forward to hearing the expanded sequel score when I finally complete my next order with Intrada.

I just received mine in the mail today... love it! Broughton is criminally underrated. Someone on the forum put it best when they said he writes music for family movies that doesn't "talk down" to the audience (or something to that effect)... A huge thank you to Intrada for continuing to put out much of his work from over the decades.

Are there any plans at all to attempt to release his full Disney Theme Park music for various attractions (Ellen's Energy Adventure, The Timekeeper, etc)? I have enjoyed the limited pieces available on some of the Disney CDs but there's much more which could be released.

I've been asking this for years. Broughton's music for the new Soarin' attraction (adapting Goldsmith's original theme) is also fantastic.

Given Intrada's relationship with and love for Broughton, I would guess the possibility that they haven't tried to do just this is about .0000000003%. I'm sure it's also incredibly complicated, with a wide variety of musicians, presumably recorded all over the place.

By which all I'm saying is, if they can do it, I'm sure they will. Maybe they're working on such a thing right now. (Well, not right now. It's a Sunday afternoon!)

I absolutely love Bruce Broughton and both scores are necessary, but I dig the sequel score a bit more.
