Right now, I am considering unfriending a major film composer on Facebook. I know that it sounds silly to make a thread about it but I wanted to get people's opinions on the state of Facebook lately.

The reason I am thinking about doing this is that this major film composer's Facebook is nothing but political posts all day, every day. It's seldom that anything other than a political post is mentioned. I have been unfriending people I know or people I know through film music for the same reasons.

Now, it is not because I may disagree with this composer's politics. It's just I am tired of politics and seeing it. The US election was a killer as my Facebook newsfeed was mostly nothing but the US election (on the left and right).

Facebook has become an outlet for people to find information that conform to their opinions, not the actual facts.

Does anyone else feel the same way?

I don't think this is too political.

I have almost completely stopped visiting Facebook for months now, simply because it became a source of major time-suckage. I haven't "un-friended" anyone, I just don't spend my time there any longer.

But, I do understand where you're coming from, Kevin.
The political climate here in the USA has become fairly toxic, and I'm avoiding getting into any of it.
I stopped watching TV news years ago, because I learned how crooked and biased the majority of the press has become. If our election has proven anything, it is that the press sells lies every minute of every day.

I'm just not listening to them any longer.

Facebook sucks.

But as for this place here, the only reason there's not what you describe above is because our moderator is a Nazi. So welcome to the dictatorship of this place, but at least we don't have to suffer through all that messy freedom of speech nonsense.

You could always 'unfollow' someone, and still remain friends. The other person will never know. I have had to do this for the reasons you list above.

Not just Farcebook, but YouTube too. I stopped watching some channels because they felt to need to vent or brag about their political views. And these are channels about hobbies.

There's an old saying, Don't discuss politics or religion during family get together's. Same should apply online unless there is a consensus.

Now no one is perfect, I've from time to time said something political online, but 99% of the time I adhere to the no politics rules.

Like you said, even if you agree with the polices it just gets annoying. People don't go to non political channels to hear politics. Their trying to get a break from it.

No religion or politics on a soundtrack board doesn't make this a dictatorship or the moderator a Nazi. (WTF?!) That's way out of line. This is a private board and your a guest. If you want to discuss those things, there's plenty of places online to do so.

I guess none of you guys watch MSNBC almost every night like I do. Been doing it for twenty years. I guess I'm a political junkie.

But you know, I actually hate politics. Any idiot can have a political opinion-- and they all do.

FACECROOK is a total joke. Never signed up for it and never will.

I know a lot of people who use it, many are family and close friends and if I say ANYTHING negative about it, they take it extremely personal and get really pissed off. That's really sad as FACECROOK is getting political in itself...:-frown

I totally agree with Solium. Our moderator is far more tolerant that I would be, so kudos to David.

I never signed up for Facebook. My friends are as addicted to Facebook as they are to their cell phones. Ugh.

I broke down and created a Facebook account a few years ago. Within weeks someone from my past "found me". I really didn't want get involved with her again. So I promptly deleted my account. I had perhaps the shortest Facebook account in history.

What's private about about this board? You don't have to register to read it. Seems pretty public to me. And as for the moderator, he's the only one here I've WANTED to get into a flame war with, either that or just give him a good slap!

Anyway, I've only registered with Facebook to look at something involving Twilight Time Blu-rays. I didn't go beyond just and I got contacted by people from the last, some old friends of my parents looking for them.

Kevin, I have a Facebook page and have a family member who posts very negative political things on there. I have done something in order to avoid seeing posts from this person and any person I wish to avoid. Instead of unfriending them, you can simply unfollow them. This has made my Facebook experience a lot more pleasant. I actually went so far as to unfollow everyone. This way I only see their posts if I chose to go to their page.

I am not a fan nor a foe of Facebook. I have only had an account for a little over a year I believe. I used to knock my friends who had one but I have found it very useful in connecting with old friends and family I have lost touch with.

I have unfriended a few people before I used the unfollow option. However, if you don't want to see this stuff, getting rid of them is a good choice. Who needs that stuff anyway?

I quite like that Facebook allows us to a further extent to learn about composer we like (or don't like^).

I just wish Williams would get on board! My heart would skip a beat with every photo of his breakfast. And I'd save them all in a folder on my computer.

It depends on how you use it. I never waste time looking at photos of people's breakfasts ("This is what I'm about to eat!"), but some groups are extremely informative without ever having to get into fights or express political opinions. I look at the page which was created for people to post old photos of my home town, the Hammer Films group, the (excellent) Midi reconstructions (of film scores) group, the British Film Locations group etc. I've never been addicted though. Five minutes every day or two and I'm through.

What's private about about this board? You don't have to register to read it.

What I meant was it's not created or controlled by the "State". FSM was created by a private citizen. If you come into his board, your coming into his house. BTW, while I don't think there's any rule about it we don't discuss porn either. And I'm fine with that. There's no shortage of porn sites online.

I too agree with joan and Solium. The one refreshing thing about this board is that it is free of heated religious and political discourse. David does a bang up job of keeping this board from going into those minefields.

I have to admit to being addicted to venting my spleen about the sorry state of things at Facebook since November. What I have to remind myself from time to time is the fact that the people I would most like to vent at are certainly not reading what I post.

I'm actually trying to mix my posts up with non-political humor and human interest stuff these days, not too successfully I must add.

Keep smiling everybody.
