I never cease amazement at the way Oscar Levant held his own with John Garfield in Humoresque. I love watching and listening to Hoagy Carmichael do "Up the Lazy River" while talking with Homer in The Best Years Of Our Lives and while performing "Am I Blue" in To Have And Have Not. And Bobby Darin in...everything.

Not to mention Mel Torme doing it all with Ben Gazzara:

This is royalty.

Gifted artists, all. Truth to tell, the line between actor and musician is far from a clear, sharply defined border. Musical theater performers are trained to act, sing and dance. Many of them -- Astaire, Bolger, Hope, Kaye, for example -- brought their multifaceted stage experience into their movies. By the time Bing and Sinatra won their respective Oscars, they each had been acting in films for years.

On the DVD of the Rod Serling teleplay, THE COMEDIAN, Mel Torme relates how he was offered a straight acting role in the production. He called his friend Edmund O'Brien and told him he was torn, because he wanted to play the part, but the pay would be much less than he could make in the same time period doing his nightclub act. "Melvin," said O'Brien, "Pay THEM."

Bowie of course has rocked in any number of film roles, from Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence to The Prestige to The Hunger to The Man Who Fell to Earth.

Elvis Presley had a string of films. Whether this was a good thing or a bad thing depends on who you ask....

Tom Waits impressed with his role as Renfield in Bram Stoker's Dracula, as well as parts in other films, and Justin Timberlake has successfully transitioned to acting with The Social Network a notable entry.

Yeah Timberlake was a find with that performance.

By the time Bing and Sinatra won their respective Oscars, they each had been acting in films for years.

For me Frankie arrived dramatically with Suddenly. It was so far removed from his brash young singer's persona. Creeps me out on a number of levels.

Katharine McPhee (who was the runner-up on the fifth season of American Idol) has done good acting work on television in "Smash" and now in "Scorpion."

And then the reverse: Gary Busey and Sissy Spacek come to mind when they both acted and sang as music people. They were simply terrific.

Spandu Ballet brothers, who played the Kray twins, I think it needed better actors to play the lead roles, not a great film though, Gary Kemp was also in Killing Zoe, that film was a let down.

Sinatra was a very good actor, but you've got to love the
easygoing Dino....

Fashion Model: As an extra feature, this outfit has been
given a belt...
Matt Helm: Hmm, I could use a belt myself...

And let's not forget Tony Bennett as the unforgettable
"Hymie Kelly" in The Oscar smile

Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon did good singing in the 2005 Johnny Cash biopic WALK THE LINE.

There's shedloads of examples. Roy Orbison in the 1967 western The Fastest Guitar Alive, Glen Campbell in True Grit, Bob Dylan in Pat Garrett (with Kris Kristofferson), Dean Martin, Willie Nelson (& Ricky Nelson).

Roger Daltrey in a few films, he was very good in McVicker (with Adam Faith). Cliff Richards in a few musicals (I still really like Summer Holiday), Tommy Steel in many films. And whole groups, The Beatles, Herman & The Hermits - Mrs. Brown You've Got A Lovely Daughter, The Dave Clarke Five - Catch Us If You Can (the first feature film directed by John Boorman).

J lo seems to be doing a very good job in Shades of Blue.

And she was very believable in the Jason Statham vehicle "Parker", apart from the fact that she wasn't dating anyone.

Most singers make horrible actors. Interesting enough a lot of comedians make wonderful dramatic actors.
