It sounds like he would be right at home in the 80's film scoring scene. Nice music, I like it, but it's been done before. That what it sounds like to me at least.

It's awesome music. But looking at the photo of what it was composed for, reminds me of a crappy AMAZING STORIES episode that had a brilliant score.

In the words of the immortal Benny Herrmann:

"Don't let 'em have it! It's too good for the G Dammed Picture!"

Bravo Maestro McKenzie!

When I first started frequenting film music boards, this score was brought up quite often as a fan favorite, but I never got around to picking it up. A lot of people around the time thought Mark McKenzie would eventually be scoring the biggest blockbusters, and it's too bad that didn't happen - I'm listening to this Overture, and it's very good.

Unfortunately, this film (a troubled production from what I understand) was dead on arrival at the box office, and while the score should've gotten McKenzie tons of work, it wasn't too long before American comedies stopped having consistently huge, rich symphonic scores. Of course, I think this Overture demonstrates that McKenzie can do anything.

And yes, the poster art has a very "Weird Science" vibe to it, which of course was the film that inspired the "Amazing Stories" episode Zooba mentions above. I don't get the impression that "Ms. Hyde" has too much much in common with either, but I guess any plot involving science experiments and an attractive woman will get the comparison.

McKenzie seems to be writing a lot of theme music for Hallmark productions these days. Has anybody heard any of that material? His newest feature is a somewhat dramatic-sounding CGI film called "Max & Me" (not to be confused with "Mac & Me"). He's still out there.

Has a bit of the David Newman feel. Nice.

In response to Dylan's post, I don't think that there was an Amazing Stories episode that had a Jekyll and Hyde Theme. I merely meant that the style and whackyness of that artwork reminded me of a crappy (not any one in particular) episode of Amazing Stories, that had a very good score.

I hear Silvestri to some extent here, and maybe a bit of Elfman. Then we cut to Witches of Eastwick. Definitely a cut above the ordinary. I wish film music sounded more like this today.

Zooba,

Oh, ok. I assumed you were directly referring to this episode of "Amazing Stories":

And no, this episode doesn't have a "Jekell and Hyde" theme, but a "science experiment and an attractive woman" theme. The "Ms. Hyde" poster art reminded me of both the 1985 John Hughes film "Weird Science" and this "Amazing Stories" episode.

Ah yes, the MISS CALCULATION episode with Jon Cryer. Such a goofy episode where Cryer was getting to that awkward look stage in his career after PRETTY IN PINK, where his gangly body was becoming more manlike as he was getting taller and maturing. His outfits in that episode and his hair are totally crazy. I even thought of that episode when you mentioned the "Weird Science" aspect.
