As some folks here know, I'm not exactly a fan of the Star Wars movies (and tend to prefer the lesser known JW scores as a general rule).

However, as a young kid I liked the Empire Strikes Back, and I still admire and listen to the score (everything except the main theme, weirdly enough). But the films imo went radically downhill starting with...Return of the Jedi! Ewoks really sunk that one for me. Anyhoo...

I've been checking out YT clips from Return of the Jedi and oh dear, I'm sold! Seems like quintessentially epic JW, and some folks apparently feel it's the best of all the SW scores.

So, trusted and hallowed FSM members, which version do you own and what do ya like about it?

Any help would be massively appreciated

The only original trilogy scores I have are the original LPs and the Arista box set from the 90's, which is plenty for me. Yub nub 4 evah.

This one, with liner notes by a certain Lukas Kendall: http://amzn.to/2uci8iH

I've got:

The original soundtrack LP.

The Arista STAR WARS Trilogy Box set.

The 1997 RCA release of the complete score.

Only the Arista box CD, which is just perfect for me. I had the later 2CD once, but sold if off. Too much. I never owned the original album, but that's a fine album too.

RETURN OF THE JEDI is my second favourite score of all time.

Do you have a favorite in terms of sound, completion, liner notes, please?

And thanks to you both for your input!

Well heck here's an expert, then! smile

So you just didn't feel the 2 cd was necessary? I notice there are a couple double disc releases out there.

That's just Thor. He almost always prefers less music to more music. :-)

I'm still super curious about the 1997 release, Nicolai, please. Are there decent liner notes, etc.

Plus, is that really a complete complete? smile

Yeah. Or to be more precise: I prefer albums that are the best listening experience. Length is really a secondary concern, although shorter albums are often a byproduct of that. But the STAR WARSes are a super-rare example where I actually prefer the expanded Arista box CD over the original albums. Not that the original albums aren't great, but a reasonable expansion was warranted here (the 2CD went beyond reasonable, IMO).

I've owned and liked all three releases, but I prefer the RCA set because it's the most complete one.Same with the other two.

The 1997 RCA release is complete AFAIR, and it's got good liner notes (though I have not read them in years).

The Arista Box set presentation is also very good, and also has good liner notes (in a handsome booklet).

Either set is fine. The Arista box set -- while not complete -- is a good representation of the score with good musical flow. The RCA set on the other hand adds quite a bit of interesting stuff that was absent from the Arista set, like the dark and ominous synthesizer music Williams wrote for for some of the opening scenes. It's actually one of those cases where I like both presentations and I listen to both. I never much cared for the original LP of JEDI though, that was too disjointed for me for this leitmotific soundtrack.

I own all of the releases.

It is not "completely complete" - it is missing the tracks that were replaced in the Special Edition (Lapti Nek and Yub Nub), a few source music tracks that have never been released (the film version of Lapti Nek, a couple of background cues from Jabba's sail barge), one concert arrangement that has never been released in full (Jabba the Hutt), and, I believe, a few minutes of score as well.

Still, it's the most complete release.

Unfortunately, the sound quality is markedly worse than the OST and the Anthology discs - I personally almost NEVER notice these things, but it's noticeable to me. It's still my preferred version of the score.

Return of the Jedi is the one Star Wars soundtrack where literally every release sucks for some reason or another. And I actually have all of 'em!

Original 1983 Polydor LP/CD/Cassette - Due to oil shortages, this ended up not getting the deluxe double LP treatment that had been afforded New Hope and Empire. As such there's only about 1/3 of the score here, some of which is not the film takes (Forest Battle and Ewok Celebration). Does have the best sound quality of the lot though. Go figure.

1993 Arista Soundtrack Anthology - Expanded by about 25% to roughly double album length although it still uses the original album edits for tracks that appeared on that. The film takes of Ewok Battle and Ewok Celebration are on here but included on the bonus Disc 4 with the latter strangely attached to the Empire Strikes Back end title. That said... its still FAAAAAAAAAAR from complete and the sound quality noticably dips when the new stuff comes up. Not as bad as the next release though.

1997/2004 Special Edition - Oh boy...

Well let's get the good out of the way. This is about 90% complete, as far as the Special Edition goes (so we get Jedi Rocks and Victory Celebration instead of Lapti Nek and Ewok Celebration). Some source cues remain lost as well as some tracked in material (the film version of "Leia is Wounded" for one).

And now the bad....IT SOUNDS HORRRRRRRIBLE. This is by far the absolute worst audio quality Stat Wars has ever had, alternatively being both shrill and muddy at the same time. When you inspire a 50+ page dissertation about your shoddy quality, you've done fudged up. Easliy the worst thing Redman and Matessino have had their names attached to.

Good luck.

That's of course true, forgot about that (since I've got both). But it is still complete in the sense that the music is not in (special edition version of) the picture either. There may be some source music missing though, so yeah, it's not "completely complete".

While I prefer Lapti Nek to Jedi Rocks, I prefer the RCA ending of the score over the Yub Nub original ending.

I have this edition.

I've never had a problem with the sound quality. It sounds just fine to me.

HUGE thanks for all the help!

I'm really leaning toward the RCA, despite the sound quality. I do like completeness.

For my part, "Return of the Jedi" is far from my favorite "Star Wars" score – it's in the bottom half for me. The LP version is too short and discombobulated for my taste, while the two-disc RCA is too long and meandering. And the sound on the latter is distressingly flat. A reasonable compromise is that Arista box, and you also get two other scores.
