Quartet Records presents two new limited edition releases, based on exotic views of Spain seen from outside Spain! THE BOBO Music by Francis Lai Arranged and Conducted by Christian Gaubert Mastered by Chris Malone Liner notes by Gergely Hubai Limited edition of 1000 units Quartet Records and Warner Bros. Records presents the premiere CD release of Francis Lai’s catchy, lovely score for Peter Sellers vehicle The Bobo, directed by Robert Parrish in 1967, also starring Britt Ekland, Rossano Brazzi and Adolfo Celi. Once you've seen one singing blue matador, you've seen them all! Or have you? Warner Bros' movie marked the dream match-up of husband and wife team Peter Sellers and Britt Ekland, made shortly before their divorce. Ekland stars as a naive beauty who gets her way with men - and her latest dream is a sports car! Sellers is a singing matador who can catch his big break if he beaks the girl's heart. But will he be able to do so? The powerhouse soundtrack of The Bobo was written by Francis Lai shortly before his Oscar-winning success of Love Story (also available from Quartet Records.) The Bobo capitalizes on Lai’s undeniable talent at writing infectious tunes, including two songs recorded especially for the album. The assembly also includes two brilliant songs composed by George Martin (The Fifth Beatle himself) and performed by Sellers in character as the Singing Matador! Mastered by Chris Malone from original album masters courtesy of Warner Bros. Records, the 8-page booklet contains liner notes by Gergely Hubai discussing the movie, the composer and its music. Track list: 01. The Blue Matador (2:59) 02. Olimpia’s Theme (3:59) 03. Imagine (Retreat Version) (4:42) 04. Girl From Barcelona (Vocal: Peter Sellers) (1:06) 05. The Bobo (Vocal Version) (2:47) 06. Imagine (Vocal Version) (2:15) 07. Olimpia’s Theme (Bossa Nova) (3:43) 08. The Bulls of Salamanca (Vocal: Peter Sellers) (1:46) 09. Bobo’s Lament (3:42) 10. The Bobo (Bossa Nova) (2:15) 11. The Blue Matador (Vocal Version) (1:16) THE SUN ALSO RISES Music Composed and Adapted by Hugo Friedhofer Conducted by Lionel Newman Spanish Music Adapted by Alexander Courage Guitar Music by Vicente Gómez Mastered by Chris Malone Liner notes by Gergely Hubai Quartet Records and Universal Music Group presents premiere CD release of Hugo Friedhofer's majestic score for The Sun Also Rises, based on Hemingway's classic story. Produced by Darryl F. Zanuck, The Sun Also Rises falls in line with other Hemingway adaptations of the era (such as Fox's own The Snows of Kilimanjaro). Starring Tyrone Power, Ava Gardner, Mel Ferrer, Errol Flynn and a very young Robert Evans as a matador, the film is a character study of the lost generation, taking place in France and Spain, capturing candid images of the controversial bullfights of the era. The music by Hugo Friedhofer is divided into two sections based on the locations. The Paris sequences are heavier on the underscoring with a few chansons providing local color. The second half of the story is more focused on traditional Spanish music with Alexander Courage arranging local music for the street scenes. The guitar parts were performed by soloist Vicente Gomez, who also wrote one of the cues. The CD contains the complete LP program, which accounts for most of the score. The first half covers the Paris scenes, while the Spanish sequences were represented by longer suites. Restored and mastered by Chris Malone from elements courtesy of UMG, the CD includes as a bonus track the main title without narration (as it was presented on the LP). The 8-page booklet by Gergely Hubai discusses the movie, the composer and its music. Track list: 01. Main Title (3:49) 02. Jake Barnes' Theme (1:58) 03. The Bal Musette Cafe (7:11) 04. Hospital Memories (5:59) 05. The Select Cafe (2:27) 06. The Fiesta of San Fermin (6:05) 07. Cantina (3:42) 08. La Fiesta Brava (6:11) 09. The Beach at Biarritz (4:09) 10. Main Title (2:29) (without narration) Both titles are now in stock! For more info, listen audio samples and order please visit www.quartetrecords.com

The Sun Also Rises — and without the narration!!! My LP is pretty beat-up, too.

I didn't realize that The Sun Also Rises LP had "most of the score" -- I'll have to see the film again to double check what might be missing, but since Quartet has worked with Fox multiple times in the past, I'm guessing that no additional music survived in the vaults. That's a shame of course, but it's high time this Friedhofer score made it to CD...with Chris Malone on the job (hopefully from tapes in the UMG archives) I'm sure this will be much better-sounding that people's homemade LP rips! Yavar The album includes even a bit more of Friedhofer than the film, although the film had a bit more adaptations of Spanish music by Alexander Courage than the LP. Virtually, all the underscore are included here, although if Fox have elements with alternates or unused music I don't know, since we had never worked with them.

Although that score was originally released on the Kapp label, and Roots of Heaven was released on the 20th Fox label, I am hopeful that if Quartet has established a relationship with Fox it may at some point be able to do the same (new and improved release) for The Roots of Heaven. Quartet Records has stated above that they have never worked with Fox at all and have no relationship with them. So for THE SUN ALSO RISES they probably dealt only with UMG (and not with Fox) and just used the LP master which UMG had preserved.
