What the hell? What was missing? Love the teaser poster as the cover, though.

What was missing?

There are 2 pieces of unreleased music you can hear in the film.

In the final film, an Insert was, well, inserted into "The Last Battle" as it transitions from the past to the present; the OST version is the original version of the cue without the Insert. There's actually a video on youtube somewhere showing Spielberg asking Williams to write the Insert in Symphony Hall.

Also, the track "High School Teacher" on the OST was always just the first 2 and half-ish minutes of the cue followed by 7 minutes of music repeated from "Omaha Beach" before returning to the end of the High School Teacher cue. When when it returns to the end, it skipped past a short section (bars 45-47) of the cue. You can hear this unreleased section in the film in its proper place.

-3 bars from "High School teacher" (where the album version repeated a huge portion of track 3)
-original opening of "Revisiting Normandy" (don't know if recorded)

and I don't know what else. Maybe some other alternates?

edit: I wonder if there could be a choirless "Hymn to the Fallen".

Awesome. We finally get to hear all that rejected action music Williams wrote for the Normandy invasion and The Final Battle!!!!

I'm might pick this one up just for that beautiful cover.
I'm a big JW fan, but I really hope price on this release goes according to what it has to offer.

Hahaha that was my first thought, too. I remember thinking of Giacchino's first Medal Of Honor as an alternate reality version of Private Ryan where Williams actually scored the action sequences.

But I'm totally buying this for those extra 3 bars! Ohhhhhh shiiiiiiiiiiit!

EDIT - I just realized that this could also be a shadow expansion for Courage Under Fire as well. Maybe some of the Horner cues Williams used as a template will be amongst the bonus tracks.

The OST has all the score from this that I could want, but I'd be mighty tempted if it includes that Edith Piaf song heard in the scene just before the bridge battle. Now, I never claimed not to be an idiot, but I've never been able to find that song, or at least that version, out in the wild.

Yes, I am aware of IMDB and have seen those listings before.

ETA: I know what the songs are (at least by title) but have never found what to my ears is the particular version of the song used in that particular scene.

I'll buy any Williams CD for extra music, but I always thought the original CD could've had better sound, so I'm also very excited about the (presumably by Matessino) new mastering

One of the dullest Williams' score, totally overrated. Wouldn't be surprised if the main title was tempted with Horner's Courage Under Fire.

Alternates? The LLL copy uses the phrase "bonus tracks" so hopefully there are some (as opposed to just extended tracks with inserts).

I used to listen to the ST at night before nodding off. Happy memories.

I'll take boring Williams over boring anybody else any day.

I'd take boring Beethoven over anybody else any day, but that's just me.

I just can't seem to get into either the movie or score. Definitely going to give the music another try though.

Brilliant, thank you LLL, a JW score I never picked up until now!

One disc should place it at $19.99.

Same here. In fact it may be my least favorite Spielberg film, and least favorite Williams score for Spielberg! I usually try to like everything, but this just left me cold. I'm happy for those who want it though, and I'm sure there will be more exciting Williams coming from LLL later this year.

Have to agree. I found the quality of the movie nearly inversely proportional to the praise it received, and Williams' score rather tepid. But I'll probably revisit the score through this new release. :-)

I wouldn't be surprised if the impetus for this reissue was maybe not from LLL themselves, though I may be completely off base on that and MV may correct me. I'm just remembering that LLL were themselves approached re: expanding Jurassic Park on disc, and they (or Mike Mattesino) used that to advocate for the expansion of The Lost World which was much more needed.

So even though I have no plans to purchase this release myself, I am happy thinking about what future Williams doors this might open for LLL.
