INTRADA Announces:

HERCULES
Composed by Pino Donaggio
Conducted by Natale Massara
INTRADA Signature Edition ISE 1013

Menahem Golam and Yoram Globus's Cannon Studios unleashed an updated version of HERCULES in 1983, confronting the strongest man in the world with never-before-seen challenges. From the day he was born, Hercules faced mortal enemies and their relentless mechanical monsters who would stop at nothing to kill him. After their continued attacks which ultimately kill his adoptive parents, Hercules begins a quest to find his destiny, with time for romance along the way when he meets the beautiful Cassiopeia. They fall in love, but get separated by the evil powers. Ultimately, Hercules must save his kidnapped love and vanquish his enemies once and for all (at least until the sequel!)

Pino Donaggio scored this version in the grand style of the Italian sword and sandal films of the '60s, presenting a brassy, muscular theme fitting for the world's strongest man. One of the highlights of the score is the mystical, atmospheric opening sequence that chronicles the beginning of the universe itself, leading up to the creation of Hercules, who's purpose is to balance the overpowering forces of evil. The score also features powerful, blocky stomping brass action music for the cumbersome mechanical monsters, a sweet oboe theme for the baby Hercules and a regal love theme. It all pulls together into a coherent, grand musical fantasy -- a genre seldom heard these days.

This release greatly expands upon the original LP version released at the time of the film, with improved sound from the original stereo session masters and is limited to 1000 copies.

Good show guys - I'm glad you kept pursuing this one Roger - I remember you tried to release it in the early 90's and it never happened. This is even better, being expanded! A good case of a favorite composer 'shoehorning' his European style into the 'Star Wars Symphonic' genre (like Mancini's Lifeforce, Barry's Black Hole, etc).

Yeah, it's ordered. I like Donaggio a lot (I even like THE BARBARIANS).

And it's only 1000 copies, so it'll probably go quick. Mind you, if the VS Club had put this out it would have gone a couple of hours ago.

Yeah, I bit the bullet on this one too. I figured it's better to buy it than wish I had when it's sold out. Sounded pretty great from the clips. I actually saw this one in theatres back in the '80s. It was a poor man's CONAN which was rated R and as such, I couldn't see it until it was on video/pay t.v. I think Lou Ferrigno's voice was overdubbed by some other dude. I guess Ferrigno's speech wasn't clear enough....

OT- I saw Ferrigno walking down the street in Toronto a couple years back. The guy is MASSIVE. He's just...well, a HULK! wink

I'm surprised it hasn't sold out yet.

Oddly enough, I tranferred my LP of this score onto CD-r only a few weeks ago. (Slowly but surely, I'm transferring all my remaining LPs...but at the rate of one or two a week, it'll be years...)

I'm so looking forward to hearing this expanded.

Go, Intrada!

It will. There's only about 150 left and so I suspect in a couple weeks time it will be gone.

I guess a release like this, from intrada, makes one wonder how many other old titles have lapsed from Varese's grasp?
Maybe something like Tourist Trap is in limbo at the moment, waiting for someone to pounce and release!
Still, this is a great release and so ordered!

Just got this CD, and wanted to thank Intrada for digging it out of the vaults and remastering it. I highly recommend it to anyone who likes a good, brassy, over the top sword & sandal score. Fun stuff.
