A TOAST to the GLUT OF HUMANITY - BELLY FLOP generation!

You know, we've been looking for a name to call our generation (where do you go after Generation X?); and I think I've found the perfect moniker.

Early word on the film is extremely negative (no surprise from this guy); I wonder how Newman's score holds up compared to the potential train wreck of a film?

Well, David Newman has plenty of past experience in the Nice Score Shame About The Film genre (of which there are more examples than any other kind of movie). As for the movie, comic book movies that open around late December/early January (The Spirit is coming out New Year's Day in the UK) generally tend to be Not Good (Daredevil, Elektra, Ghost Rider).

Sound bites: David Newman
'The Spirit'
By JON BURLINGAME

Comicbook movies always seem to need a lot of music. But it need not always be heroic, or even action-oriented. For "The Spirit," Frank Miller's adaptation of the Will Eisner strip, composer David Newman found himself "playing the subtext more than anything.

"There are all kinds of adult, fairly philosophical conundrums in the movie," says Newman. "It's a much more intellectual score than I've done in quite a long time."

To characterize the mysterious Spirit (Gabriel Macht), Newman made an unusual musical choice: the harmonica, played by acclaimed musician Tommy Morgan (who has played on everything from the Beach Boys' "Pet Sounds" to "Dances With Wolves").

"The Spirit is a kind of postmodern loner hero," Newman explains. "He comes from nowhere, he has no real relationship to anything. ... An artist like Tommy can make the harmonica really expressive, yet it retains this singular quality; nothing else sounds like it."

There are jazzy moments for femme fatale Silken Floss (Scarlett Johansson) and an eerie, wordless soprano for Lorelei (Jaime King) that is performed by Newman's 19-year-old daughter Diana, a vocal major at USC.

One thing that made the job easier was the fact that Miller supplied all the sound design to his composer in advance. "I could orchestrate accordingly and just stay out of the way when you can see that they are going to favor (sound effects)," Newman says.

I haven't forgiven the harmonica since it nearly ruined Chris Young's HARD RAIN.

Interesting. I thought the "Untouchables" music was extremely effective in the trailer--I wonder if the "Strength of the Righteous" theme was actually used as a temp, and that resulted in its use in the trailer?

I love David Newman, but does he know what "post-modern" means?

Silva Screen Records are to release Newman’s music on CD next month and it looks to be the only label doing so as in the US the score is to be available only through Amazon’s ‘Disc on Demand’ service. Full details will be available at the Silva website shortly with a mid-January release date looking likely.

Thats some damned good news, ColSharpe.

I have nothing against CD/Rs per se but I'd loathe to see a trend toward it.

Just got my (proper) CD from Silva and it's great stuff! The music recalls his Phantom score and other parts keep reminding me of Jerry Goldsmith (those trombones!).
I skipped the film, due to the worst negative press I've ever read, but if it generated a score like this, it wasn't all in vain.

All these posts and only one person mentioning the music on score CD! I just picked it up today and thought this deserved a bump, as it's a really enjoyable listen. Not as memorable as I'd like (and some tracks I find difficult to listen to, attached as they are to memories of this truly atrocious film) and the generic superhero sound a la Elfman makes some brief appearances, but still a nice change of pace from recent Newman. I loved the harmonica stuff!

Recent Newman!!??
You mean there's been some?
This was the last score released by him, wasn't it?

Haha, well yes that's true, though they did release the score to spy next door recently, not sure if its a download only. But for those of us that bother to trawl through his films without score releases (don't ask me why we do), its clear he's criminally relegated to low-brow, mostly kiddy comedy. I haven't seen the new chipmunks yet but I, er, greatly anticipate doing so...

Amen brother maximus, you're not wrong there.
It's a crying shame that a talented composer like David Newman has mainly wasted his talent on Hollywood dross.
You're right, The Spy Next Door did get released as a download only release.
Oh to hear him score something like Clash Of The Titans or Prince Of Persia, still dross, but with a bit more room to flex his muscles.

I am here to agree. It is a shame that David Newman does not get better films to score. How I would love to see (and hear) a big budget movie like Captain America.

Newman scoring some of these bigger, current rubbish films would at least end up giving them at least one redeemable feature. Not unlike The Swarm, Cassandra Crossing, King Soloman's Mines etc, wherein Goldsmith made unwatchable rubbish watchable (listenable??) smile

Well, Joss Whedon is doing THE AVENGERS movie. If they got along well on SERENITY, he might be a candidate to do that.

I was interested until I saw that it contains that most dreaded of instruments, the harmonica.

Then you've missed out on a truly fantastic and utterly enjoyable score for such a peculiar reason. I cannot fathom a dislike of the harmonica but hopefully yours will pass.

No, it has lasted for decades. When I download the harmonica replacement app, I will give this one a chance.
