I like the movie and enjoy the score as it's in the film - but the score doesn't translate well to album. I felt the same about Doyle's Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes. I'm not damning either score or the people that may like them - but after picking up Nim's Island at a Family Dollar Store, I remembered what the man's voice sounded like. I really wish he was given similar directions on Thor.
Is it me, or is the beginning of 'Escape from Capri' from The Last Legion blatantly quoted in the movie when The Warriors Three and Sif meet Thor on earth?
Yup, I was thinking the same thing as I was watching the movie the other night. That and thr completely effin' stupid decision to take THE ENTIRE THEME out of "Sons of Odin". It's literally just the rhythm and harmonies.
Still, this stands as one of the Top 10 scores of 2011 for me. Highly enjoyable!
Looks like we can add this title to the quietly gone to OOP list. Cheapest I could find was around $40 dollars used on Amazon. New going for $60-$80 bucks on Amazon and Ebay.
We watched this again as part or our seemingly annual run through the Marvel catalog. We actually watched Ragnarok the other night (or as I call it Thor for People Who Hate Thor).
I love this score. I wish Marvel was more attached to established themes. Anytime I hear the "Marvel doesn't have themes" I reply that Marvel has some fantastic themes, they just never get used. (Look out, Captain Marvel!)
Doyle does some fine action work (I'm not familiar with Transformers, so I don't get pissed about that) and it takes more than drums to make a Zimmer clone. But where this score shines for me is the Asgard stuff (both the album and film takes) and of course when Thor pleads for the life of the town. I think this might be the most beautiful music in the Marvel canon. Can You See Her ranks pretty high. Basically all the parts when Doyle is the most Doyle.
Again, I don't know if this came from something I don't recognize but the opening of The Compound is snazzy. But then I get bored until he gets to the Hammer. Then it's my favorite part of the movie.
I love Dark World too, but if I could have gotten another Doyle score I'd have taken it.
