I think Harrison Ford is Olivier, Burton and Day-Lewis level when compared to non-actors like Sean Connery or Michael Caine. People who had Larger than Life screen presence no doubt, but basically played (with) themselves from film to film.
Just on general principles, anybody that Dan the Man hated must be great! Sir Laurence Olivier he is not, but I've always liked Ford's smirky persona, and the films where he gets a chance to "smolder" with anger, which he probably does better than anybody. Usually entertaining, and that's 90% of the battle, as far as I'm concerned. Great in the Indiana Jones and Star Wars films, and I also really enjoyed his performance in THE FUGITIVE and a few others. Two thumbs up!
I remember a bit in Blade Runner, where he's being beaten up outside by one of the replicants, and his dazed reactions and mugging always pulls me out of the film, with his exaggerated facial contortions. Of course, that could have been exactly how Ridley Scott wanted him to perform, so there's that?
Yes Kev. As I mentioned 20 years ago, when daniel the manuel was posting 100 posts a day, I don't like it when Harrison Ford tries to look angry. Flared nostrils, downturned mouth grimace...looks he he's always on the point of turning into a weerwulf.
